Sgt. Charles William Fells MiD.. British Army 30 Corps Royal Signals from Mansfield
My father, Charles Fells, was a sergeant in the Royal Signals. As with all old soldiers at that time, the information he imparted in his life time was, to say the least, sketchy. Most of what I gleaned was from my mother.
He was with 30 Corps in the 8th Army and served time in Palestine before taking part in the desert campaign in North Africa, including the 2nd Battle of El Alamein October 1942. Then it was onward to Tunisia and from there to the Sicily Landings, before he came back to England to prepare for the D-Day invasion of Europe. He landed on Gold Beach on the 6th day. Then he was involved in the battle for Caen and Operation Bluecoat. At the Falaise Gap he told me that he had never seen so many dead horses in one place. After this, it was on to Nijmegen and the crossing of the Rhine.
His name was cited in the London Gazette in March 1944, being Mentioned in Dispatches. I never knew for what this honour was bestowed. My father died at his home in December 1997.

My grandfather was Sgt. Joseph Wilfred Fenna. He served in the 5th Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment from 1941-1946. He saw service in Africa, Italy, (Sicily), France (D-Day & Operation Market Garden), Germany & Burma. We still have his diary from 1944 where he talks about his experiences on D-day and the year, it's amazing! We also have his service and army release documents. Mary Forsyth Fenner . Women's Land Army from Glasgow, Scotland
My Mom, Mary Forsyth Fenner, served in the WLA during WWII and was stationed in Ayrshire, Scotland at Trachraigue and Calzean Castle. She worked hard in the fields and with the animals. She made many friends during her time in the WLA and took some of them to my Grandmother's home in Girvan during their off time. They would bicycle through the fields and arrive there in no time. The girls would allow my cousins to ride their bicycles, a rare treat during wartime, and then stay for tea. I am hoping that someone may still remember her and fill in the gaps in her wartime service.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
