Pte. Wesley C. Farrell . United States Army D Btry 59th CA Regt (AA) from Pennsylvania
Able Sea. William Joseph Farrell . Royal Navy HMS Forfar from Harbour Grace, Nfld.
(d.9th Dec 1940)
My Uncle William Farrell was born in May 1920 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada. He sailed for Britain with the fourth contingent Royal Navy in Feb 1940 onboard RMS Nova Scotia. He trained at HMS Pembroke at Chatham in Kent and was assigned to HMS Forfar.
The ship was torpedoed on 2nd of Dec 1940. it was believed by family he was lost at sea, however we have since learned he died Dec 9th. He is buried to our knowledge at the Commonwealth war graves in Chatham. My brother and I would like to find details of his rescue, which ship was he on, which hospital was he sent to, and place of death etc. We would be grateful if survivors families or any person with any knowledge of William's life in service, could email me.
Editors Note: The Naval Memorial at Chatham is a memorial to those whose home port was at Chatham and were buried at sea. As the Forfar was lost on the 2nd and William's death is recorded as being on the 9th it is likely that he was taken aboard another ship, where he subsequently passed away and was then buried at sea as is the Naval custom.

A/Lt. Mathew Cameron Farrer DSC.. Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve No. 709 Naval Air Squadron, Fleet Air Arm from Te Kuiti, New Zealand
(d.27th Aug 1945)
Mathew Farrer is a distant cousin of mine whom I discovered whilst researching my ancestry. His death at HMS Vulture training airfield is recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, and he is remembered at the New Zealand Naval Memorial in Devonport, Auckland.
Bmbdr. Edward Manaton Farrier . British Army Royal Artillery from Swinton S. Yorkshire
I was lucky to get away from Dunkirk, but unlucky when I became a Prisoner of War in Greece, 1914. In the first seven weeks of captivity I was put in a camp at Corinth. and it was not long before I got body lice, and got dizzy spells when I stood up from hunger. Himmler once came to look at us and I remember that one man next to me had a large Union Jack tattooed on his chest. As Himmler went by some of the German officers spat on this man's chest.
After seven weeks we were sent to Austria. but we had to walk for the first 20 miles. I had no boots. because a German Officer had confiscated them beforehand, so someone gave me a pair of gaiters which I wrapped around my feet. I managed to walk the 20 miles even though my feet were blistered and bleeding. We then had to get in some railway cattle trucks. I was so stiff I could not get in an Australian had to lift me in. Each truck was loaded with fifty two men, and each man was given one loaf of bread, and this loaf of bread had to last them five days. We were given a drink of water after thirty two hours and were allowed out onto the railway bank to attend to nature.
In Austria, at Stalag XVIIIA (18A), Wolfsburg. we were interviewed on what work we did in England. Many men said they were clerks, but I said I was a horse trainer, but we all finished up with long handled shovels. Before we got Red Cross parcels we were always hungry. After being a prisoner of war for four years and one month I was freed by the Eight Army and flown back to England. My feet and legs still trouble me at times. but when 1 think how the P.O.Ws were treated in Burma. I say to myself, Lucky Me.

L/C Harold Frederick William "Dick" Farrow . British Army 1st Battalion The Royal Norfolks from Ipswich
Harold Farrow was in The Royal Norfolk's 1st Battalion, S Company. He has told us, his 5 sons, many stories about when he was in the war and after. We didn't know when to believe him or not as he seems to have been near or where the action was when watching any war film or documentary on WW2! It was not until just lately that I realised there were many truths in his stories but like all of us we tend to exaggerated some times but in Harold's case it wasn't exaggeration, it was probably just like he said, the horror, the injustice and many laughs and of course the joy of coming though it.
I have many photos from the time and also he had in his possession a copy of No. 22 of "The Yellow Flash" the Official Journal of the 1st Bn. The Royal Norfolk Regt., dated May 1947. In this journal it has an entry about him and two of his friends from S Company getting demobbed together. They were known as The Three Musketeers and amazingly they all joined the army together and all served their time in S Company. The other two people mentioned were Pte Guidotti and L/C Sidell.
I have seen another article on this website which I can't seem to find now, where it mentions The Three MustGetBeers and I believe this to be referring to the same three people except in the other article it had L/C Farrow(my Dad Harold), Pte Henry John Guidotti and Cpl Plinstone, this was from the NAAFI news. I don't know if the names have got mixed up or not but my dad said it was definitely L/C Sidell in his threesome and he cannot remember a Cpl. Plinstone.
I have some pictures of my father and his friends n and after the war that I can share with you if anyone wants to have a look, these are a bit blurry but with a bit of computer photo edit they could be made to look better.
Seaman J. A. Farrow . Royal Naval Reserve HMS Forfar
J.A.Farrow was one of the survivors when HMS Forfar was lost in the Atlantic.
Sqd.Ldr. James Phillip Farrow . Royal New Zealand Air Force 692 Squadron.
My Dad, Sqd Leader James Phillip Farrow (RNZAF), flew with 50 Sqd not long after his arrival from the training he received in Canada sometime in either 1940/42. He was at that time a Sergeant. I would like to find out more about 50 squadron, as Phil passed away last year and I never really asked him anything about this Sqd. I think he must have been flying Hampton's, as he was next sent to 408 Canadian Sqd (Goose Sqd). I realise that many of my dad’s mates may have passed on as he has, but one never knows. He did end up flying Mosies with 692 Sqd
F/O Robert Edward Farrow DFC & Bar.. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 613 Sqd. from Catford, London
(d.15th Apr 1945)
Bob Farrow was my husband's uncle, after whom he was named. We are desperately trying to find out what we can about him, as the family fractured soon afterwards, and we know so little. Did anyone know him? We know why he was awarded the DFC, but not the bar. If anyone can help we would be so grateful.
Stanley Andrew Farrow . Royal Air Force
My grandad was at Biggin Hill 1940 to 45. His name was Stanley Andrew Farrow born 1 Aug 1912. I have no photos of my grandad in his uniform or know anything about his RAF life only what my mum and uncle have told me. He would have been 100 this year had he still been with us. I would really like to find out more.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
