About
Tec. Jacob "Jake" Gerstner . United States Army (d.7th March 1945)
My uncle Tec Jacob `Jake' Gerstner was a POW in Stalag 4B. We were informed that he was taken from the barracks and not seen again. We would appreciate any other information that anyone may have about him or anyone who may have been with him in the camp. He was declared dead on 7th March 1945.
Edward Gess . British Army 8th Army
My father, Edward Gess, was a sniper in the 8th Army. He used to have lots of pictures of all his wartime mates, most of whom died in battle. We also used to have a lovely letter from Montgomery which talked about his bravery at El Alamein. He would never talk about his experiences and, sadly, he suffered dreadfully throughout my childhood and died quite young. All photos, letters and his medals have been lost over time due to many moves.
Jack Getgood . R 2 Sqdn.
Jack and Lawrie Getgood went from Hatfield to Sawbridgeworth with No. 2 Sqdn when an Advanced Landing Ground was opened on farm fields there on 15th June 1940. Jack was a Fitter's Mate; Lawrie was a Wireless Operator.
Lawrie Getgood . Royal Air Force 2 Sqdn.
My brother Jack and I went from Hatfield to Sawbridgeworth with No. 2 Sqdn when an Advanced Landing Ground was opened on farm fields there on 15th June 1940. He was a Fitter's Mate; I was a Wireless Operator.
Craftsman George Getley . British Army
George is my grandfather. He drove Diamond T Tank transporters during N.Africa and Italy campaigns.
I would love to find anyone who knew him or served with him during the war.
Hugo William Gevers . Dutch Army
P/O. Richard Geytenbeck . Royal Air Force 227 Squadron
I met the son of an Australian pilot in 227 Sqn with the surname Geytenbeck or Geytenbeek and am trying to find information for him. The man I am searching for only served in the last period of the war (approximately Sep 1944 to July 1945) and flew out of Strubby for 5 operations. I believe his last operation was to Berchtesgarten. He did not die in the war and therefore his name does not appear on 'Honour Rolls'. I have also searched Autralian War Memorial site to no avail. Does anyone have any information?
Naik. Yeshwant Ghadge VC.. British Indian Army 5th Mahratta Light Infantry from India
(d.10th July 1944)
Hdvr. Gaje Ghale VC.. British Indian Army 2nd Btn. 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles from Nepal
Gaje Ghale was 20 years old, a Havildar in the 2nd Battalion of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles when he was awarded the VC.
"During the period 24th to 27th May 1943 in the Chin Hills, Burma, Havildar Gaje Ghale was in charge of a platoon of young soldiers engaged in attacking a strong Japanese position. Wounded in the arm, chest and leg he nevertheless continued to lead assault after assault, encouraging his men by shouting the Gurkha's battle-cry. Spurred on by the irresistible will of their leader, the platoon stormed and captured the position which the Havildar then held and consolidated under heavy fire, refusing to go to the Regimental Aid post until ordered to do so."
Hon.Capt. Gaje Ghale VC.. British Indian Army 5th Btn, Gurkha Rifles from Nepal
Spr Abdul Ghani . British Indian Army 2nd Field Company King George V's Own Bengal Sappers and Miners from Kala Bakra Jalandhar. India
(d.09 April.1944)
Abdul Ghani was my real uncle. At the age of 20 he died thousands of miles away from home. He died in the Kohima War in Nagaland, at the border of Burma, fighting against Japanese in the famous Tennis Court Battle.
He was unmarried,6 feet tall and a handsome person. In 1947 our family migrated to Pakistan. In the chaos of migration we lost his only memory, his photograph. We knew nothing about him, where he died, and how,and where buried. The British have gone back to their country, and in between,India, with no cordial relation. It was just accidently, during the surfing of war cemetries website,we got the where about of the grave.

C/Cpl William Henry Gibbins . British Army 8th Btn Royal Artillery King's Shropshire Light Infantr from Tenbury Wells Worcs
(d.2000)
William Henry Gibbins was my father.
He passed away in 2000, in Ontario Canada. Just before he passed, he gave me his Record of Service. It indicates he was with K.S.L.I. from 1940-01-14 to 1943-02-11.
From there he went to C.M.P. from 1943-02-12 to 1946-05-29. While a member of the Military Police, he went to Germany shortly after D Day, and was overseas for the majority of the war.
I have added several of the many photos I have that Dad brought home and kept over the years. Although these were not taken when he was in KSLI, as I don't believe he went to Germany until he joined the Military Police
I believe he said he was in the 8th Battalion; and he mentioned the long marches they did for training.
He didn't speak much of his time in the military, until 2 weeks prior to his death (lung cancer).
I have always wanted to find any military documents which will give the family more information on his service to England, and to add to the Army Form W5258 document I have, and the 4 medals he received from his time in the military - along with the many photo's I have in my collection that he gave me.
I have tried many other sites on the internet, and I am a member of Ancestry but I cant seem to find information on his service record anywhere.
Please add my Dad's name to the list of Servicemen who served with KSLI from 1940 to 1943.
Thank you

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
