About
Capt. Bill Gamble . United States Air Force 490th Bomb Group from Merkel, Texas
Bill Gamble(wife Bessie) Captain, flew with the 490th Bomb Group from England on bombing missions to Germany in 1944 and 1945. His crew were:
Walter L Benedict (known as Benny) (wife June) Bud Becker, tail gunner,(wife Bonny) Don Winters George Miller (wife Twyler)
AOM2c. Donald Charles Gamble . US Navy FAW-7 from New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA
(d.1st Apr 1944)
Donald Gamble was a member of the St. Martin's Episcopal Church and was awarded a cross for his long service as a choir boy there. He attended New Bedford High School and prior to going into the Navy, Donald was a clerk at the Minkin Auto & Radio Store in New Bedford, MA. Donald's parents were Charles and Hazel (Hammond) Gamble.
He actually lied about his age to get into the Navy. He signed up on his 17th birthday but told the officials he was 18. He was stationed at Newport, RI, Jacksonville, FL, Norfolk, VA and lastly in England. His hut in Jacksonville, FL was called the Buzzard's Roost. His Great Nephew, Weston Sherman, has named his tree house the Buzzard's Roost to honor his Great Uncle. Per family lore, Donald's last words to the family while leaving his home on Spruce Street to fly to England were "take care of Patsy". My Mother (Donald's sister Patricia or Patsy as he called her) was between 6 and 9 years old when he was in the service so unfortunately she does not remember him.
Donald's duty during WWII was the ball turret gunner (the one under the plane just behind the wings also known as the Belly gunner). His Bomber plane was called the PB4Y-1 and also known as the B24 Liberator. On March 31, 1944 his plane went missing over the Bay of Biscay near England as his bomber was patrolling for German submarines and they encountered bad weather with no fighter escorts when they came out of a cloud bank. We believe the German fighters got them and they were listed as lost at sea on the 31st then declared killed in action on April 1, 1944.
In England there is a cross with his name on it at the Cambridge Memorial Cemetery and his name in a book viewed by the public every day at the St. Paul's Church in London. And closer to home - his name is on the WWII Memorial Wall in Washington, DC and a memorial brass plaque at the Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass. At the Rural Cemetery (in his home town of New Bedford, Mass) he has a veteran's stone. The book "U.S. Navy PB4Y-1 (B-24) Liberator Squadrons: in Great Britain during World War II" by Alan Carey is very much like our Uncle's life in England and his life during the WWII. He is actually pictured on page 58 with the rest of his VB-110 squad members.
His parents (Charles and Hazel Hammond Gamble) were awarded the Navy Air Medal with 3 Gold Stars and a Purple Heart posthumously for Donald's outstanding ability and zeal during day and night missions in defense of our vital supply line to the European theatre of war. He was one of a group which played an important part in reducing the German U-Boat menace from their home station at Dunkeswell in Devon England. His unwavering devotion to duty throughout a period of intense operations was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval service. He participated in many operations under constant threat of German aerial attack and in the face of treacherous weather conditions. He was a member of the Navy Club of Greater New Bedford, MA SHIP NO. 22.
Because a few of the children died young or in WWII with the name "Charles" as a first or a middle name - this name was never used again and was considered to be jinxed. My grandmother even told her children to never use the name again (as the first or middle name) and they never did. And this philosophy has even been passed to the next generation and should be carried forward to generations to come. Donald is a direct descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims Myles Standish (GS #86,222), George Soule (GS #86,222), John Alden (GS #86,222), Francis Eaton, John Howland, Thomas/John Rogers, Degory Priest, Henry Howland, Richard Warren, Francis/John Cooke and John Tilley. And lastly, one nice thing is that we all have at least one picture of him in each of our homes - even though many of us never met him - he is still in our hearts.

T/Sgt. George A. Ganem . USAAF 338th Bomb Squadron
My father-in-law, T\Sgt George A. Ganem, was in the 96th.BG 338th.BS stationed at Snetterton Heath England. On July 10 1943 he was loaned to the crew of a Capt. Flagg on a B-17 called "Wabbit Twaks". Their target was Lebourget France. I would like any information on this mission the aircraft and the crew. The next mission my father-in-law flew, was July 28th with his own crew on their B-17 "Paper Doll". They had to ditch in the North Sea. Their B-17 floated a record amount of time allowing all crew to exit safely to their rafts. They were picked up by the Germans and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 17-B. He did not know about any ribbons he had earned on his previous mission to Lebourget France. Would like if possible any pictures of these two B-17's and their crews or medals earned or any information at all.

Sgt. Charles Edward Gannon . British Army Royal Army Service Corps
Charles Edward Gannon - my Dad - was in the RASC during WW2 and was stationed in Accra, in what was then the Gold Coast and is now Ghana. I have an album from that time with various photographs and documents. One of the photos lists names of the Africans and Europeans in the picture. The Europeans include: Sgt Gannon (Dad), Cpl Scott, Pte Rush, Sgt Heelis, Sgt Franklin, SSM Currie, Sgt Stanley, Sgt MacEver, Cpl Chambers, Pte Bull, Cpl McTylee (3rd Row) Cpt. Malek, Lieut Wauters, Capt Oakley, Major Artmitage, Brig Richards, Capt Hardy, Majors Sarif, Hilton, Howells, Capts Millais, Simpson.
As far as I can make out, Dad was in Buller B Squad No.3 Company at the RASC in Mandora Barracks, Aldershot before moving out to Accra. I have letters from other servicemen or their wives who brought back/received items for Mum brought home by his pals - these include: Eric Chambers whose address was the Hall, Everton, near Doncaster; G.H. Stanley who was living at 36 Abbeysteads Road, Liverpool; and G.Reader from 52 Whitstone Road, Shepston Mallet, Somerset. I also have a menu card from one of their Christmas dinners out there, an impressive menu, which is autographed but it is difficult to read all the signatures.
Driver John Gannon . Army RASC (d.7th February 1945)
During the second World War the Allied and German soldiers, who were killed in Goirle, Noord Brabant, the Netherlands and in the neighbourhood, were buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery from the parish St. Jan in Goirle.
After the war the remains of the German soldiers were reburied in Ysselsteijn (near Venray) and most of the allied soldiers were reburied in Bergen op Zoom (War Cemetery and Canadian War Cemetery) and in Leopoldsburg (Belgium, War Cemetery).
At this moment there are 27 Allied graves in Goirle. Every year we commemorate the victims of World War II, both soldiers and civilians. We know their names, but who were the persons behind the names? What were their lives before they died? Where did they come from? How did they die? Under what circumstances?
It is my intention to give the victims a face, to write and keep the story behind the gravestones because we always will remember the soldier who died for our liberty. We can forget names, but not faces. I will try to write down all their stories for the next generation so they will know who was commemorated.
Maybe someone can help me with Driver John Gannon, RASC T/14527676, who died on the 7th February 1945, age 20.
Send me a letter or an e-mail with additional information, a photograph or a copy of any personal document, which I can use for The Memory Book or a website. Thank you in advance for your help.
Flt Lt James Bernard "Bernie" Gant . RCAF Flight Control RAF Middleton St George

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
