World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Wilfred Hurrell .     Royal Navy HMS Revenge

It is my understanding from my late father, Stanley Hurrell, that Wilfred and my father's other brother Phillip Hurrell served on HMS Revenge during WW2. I believe Wilfred died at sea during the War, I presume, whilst on this ship, but can find no record of this nor any details of crew members of HMS Revenge during WW2.

My other uncle Philip and my father Stanley are both deceased, so I don't have much to go on other than a photo of Wilfred and Philip in sailors uniform wearing caps that bear the HMS Revenge name. If anyone is able to help I would appreciate it as I am trying to piece together this part of my family history.

Sgt. Percy Hurst .     Royal Air Force 49 Squadron (d.26th April 1940)

Fus. Terence "Sonny" Hurst .     British Army 2nd Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers   from Littleborough

My grandfather, Terence Hurst, was a fusilier in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, 2nd battalion. My grandfather wasn't with the Battalion at Dunkirk. I believe he joined them as they went to Tunisia in July 1943. He then went to Italy in 1944, then on to Greece in 1945. My grandfather is now deceased but was a great man who always talked of his time with the Battalion with pride.

While in Italy in Capri, he told a story of Gracie Fields putting on a performance for them. She asked if any soldiers were from Rochdale, my Grandad spoke up, and Gracie claimed all men from Littleborough (near Rochdale) were as good looking as my Grandad, this was his favourite tale to tell anyone(can't imagine why?).

It would be great to hear from anybody who knew my Grandad, or even just any details about the 2nd Battalion, as I am trying to write down all details to pass on to my children. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sqd Ldr. Walter Joseph Hurst AFC.     Royal Air Force 224 Squadron.   from Reading

My Dad knew David Sleep well, who has a plaque commemorating him at Beaulieu airfield. He went on to serve in the Berlin Airlift and was CO for Transport Command's 1325 Flight at Christmas Island (Grapple). I have loads of WW2 photos from him, his logbooks, pay receipts, diaries etc.

John Hurstfield .     British Army

I am trying to locate anyone who knew my father during his service in North Africa, Italy and finally Greece. His name was John Hurstfield. He had a keen interest in sport, especailly football. I know that at one time he was with George Eastham, (whose son became an English international player in the 1960s). His best friend was Harry Green, who was killed in the desert near Tunis, around 1943. Dad died 15 years ago and seldom spoke about his experiences. He was also friends with a chap named Ted Chute. Any information would be helpful.

Joseph Alexander Hurt .     British Army 5th Btn. Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry   from London

Joe boxing

Joseph was with the DCLI. He was injured in some way early in the war and spent some time in hospital having burns and shrapnel in his back, it led to the loss of his hearing also. By the time he returned to the fighting there were very few people left from those he originally served with. He moved through France and the low countries and on into Germany where he appears to have remained after the war's end. He was stationed in Hamburg at one point and we have photos of him boxing at the 43rd Wessex Divison army boxing championships when his team were the winners.

I would be grateful if anyone who knows of him or any mention of him could let me know.

Cpl Joseph Alexander Hurt .     5th Btn. A Coy. Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry   from London

Just received my dad's service record and it states that he was wounded in action and suffered GSW (mortar) to the face and was evacuated to UK on 28 June 1944 before being sent back to NWE in March 1945. His name was Joe Hurt. He was promoted first L/Cpl then Cpl before being discharged on 27 December 1946. He was also a member of the Battalion Boxing Team who won a championship whilst in Germany with 43rd Wessex, BOAR.

F/Lt. William Franklin Husson .     Royal Air Force 150 Sqdn.   from Galt, Ontario, Canada

My father, William F. Husson, was the pilot of a Lancaster C for Charlie, Cock of The North. He flew 33 missions over Germany. I got to know his crew from Canada but I never did know his crew from England. I believe there were two or three. If anyone remembers my father, please contact me, I have some memorabilia I could share.

Richard N. Huston .     United States Army   from Wyoming

My uncle Richard Huston was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge and transferred to Stalag IV B. He was held there until the Russians liberated them. He never talked much about his time there, except to say that he had been wounded in the neck and there was a doctor that helped him by washing the wound with water and putting a piece of brown paper on it to keep it covered and clean. I believe he said the doctor was from England.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
