World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Pte. John Harding .     British Army Cheshire Regiment   from Birkenhead, Cheshire

My father, Jack Harding, was a private in the Cheshire Regiment. He was captured at Dunkirk in May 1940 and was a prisoner until the end of the war. I'm in the process of trying to find some information about his experience as a prisoner-of-war in Poland.

Pte. John Harding .     British Army 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment   from Birkenhead, Cheshire

My father, Jack Harding, was captured at Dunkirk. He was in the following camps: Stalag V1/A, XX1/B, XX1/D and finally Stalag 344. He never talked much about his experience as a prisoner of war and sadly as he is now deceased his story has died with him.

I would love to hear from anyone who was with him at these camps or anyone who had a relative who was at the camps so my family & I can have some idea of what he experienced. I would particularly like to know what happened after the prisoners were liberated. The last date I have is 20.11.1944 when he was at Stalag 344.

Sgt. John Harding .     British Army Royal Engineers   from Hackney

My father, John Harding told us that he was a dispatch rider, he was apparently ordered to clear a field of sheep with another soldier so that a test firing could be carried out with 2000 rockets. The commanding officer gave the order too soon and my father and his friend were forced to hide in craters to try to protect themselves. This occurred just before D-day. As a result of this he was unable to participate on D-day but went over several days later and found that a lot of his friends had been killed.

PFC. Litton Lill Harding .     U.S. Army 508th Regiment, Company A Military Police   from Wise, VA

N Harding .     British Army 7th Btn. Royal Tank Regiment

N Harding served with the 7th Btn. Royal Tank Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project are no longer in touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Robert Harding .     Royal Air Force

Sgt. Roy Sidney Harding .     British Army 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers   from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

My father, Roy Harding, was a member of 18 Platoon, D Company, 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers during WW2. He was one of six Englishmen drafted into this Welsh Regiment in 1944. I believe he joined the battalion in France after the battle for Caen, and he then fought through Belgium, The Netherlands and into Germany.

CSM Sydney Joseph Harding .     British Army   from London

Sydney Harding served with the 8th Army.

Trpr. Thomas Robert Harding .     British Army B Squadron Royal Tank Regiment   from London

My grandfather, Tommy Harding, was a trooper (tank driver), member of the RTR. He served first with the Experimental Wing of the RTR and was stationed at Bovington before moving off to North Africa. He was captured at El Alamein on 4th September 1942 and passed into Italian hands. Details of this can be found in the 50th Royal Tank Regiment, The Complete History by Stephen D Hamilton. the operation did not go as planned and due to loss of radio contact, a mistake by NZ troops in reading a signal, and an unmarked mine field a catastrophic event occurred leading to loss of life in the tanks and capture by the Germans, who handed their prisoners over to the Italians. After being held by the Italians and then shipped back to various prison camps and transit areas Tom arrived at POW Camp Stalag IVC in October 1943 and was promptly put to work in the coal mines.

At the end of the war he was returned home to a military hospital, Preston Hall at Maidstone, weighing just five and a half stone and suffering from TB and malnutrition. He was discharged in December 1946 with a 100% disability having had a tubercular lung removed and with extensive damage to the other. Despite this Tom worked as a driver before he and his wife, Ada, bought a pet shop at Clapham before retiring to Cambridgeshire where he died in 1969 from the lasting effects of the tuberculosis.

Sgt. William Harding .     British Army 1st Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment   from Macclesfield, Cheshire

William Harding struggled with malaria when he came home, but he rarely spoke about his time in the war at all. I do not know much about my grandfather but have applied for information. I know nothing of his dates of service, all I know is that he was in India and Burma. I have his third class certificate from Jullundur in 1940 and photos of the regiment in India.

Edward Frederick George Hardingham .     British Army   from Denmark Road, Lowestoft

Edward Hardingham was captured at the fall of Singapore and forced to work on the Burma Siam Railway.

Jonas Hardingham was 23 when he died and is buried in the Dugort Church of Ireland Churchyard, Co. Mayo, Ireland

Gnr. Thomas Hardisty .     British Army 74 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, 186 Bty, H Troop. Royal Artillery   from Cleator Moor, Cumberland

(d.15th Sep 1944)

My father, Tom Hardisty served with H. Troop. 74 Lt A.A. Regt, in Malta between October 1941 and July 1943, he then moved to Sicily on the 14th of July and the 28th of August 1944. The photograph would have been taken in either Malta or Sicily. I hope that someone may recognize others on the photograph with my father. I would hope for some feedback as to who the others may be. I'm sure they would have been close friends in those hard and sad times. Father sadly died in Sept 1944. I was too young at that time to be able to get to know him, before he died just aged 39yrs old. I would appreciate any information received.

Private Henry G Hardman .     Army Cheshire Regiment (d.1st December 1944)

During the second World War the Allied and German soldiers, who were killed in Goirle, Noord Brabant, the Netherlands and in the neighbourhood, were buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery from the parish St. Jan in Goirle.

After the war the remains of the German soldiers were reburied in Ysselsteijn (near Venray) and most of the allied soldiers were reburied in Bergen op Zoom (War Cemetery and Canadian War Cemetery) and in Leopoldsburg (Belgium, War Cemetery).

At this moment there are 27 Allied graves in Goirle. Every year we commemorate the victims of World War II, both soldiers and civilians. We know their names, but who were the persons behind the names? What were their lives before they died? Where did they come from? How did they die? Under what circumstances?

It is my intention to give the victims a face, to write and keep the story behind the gravestones because we always will remember the soldier who died for our liberty. We can forget names, but not faces. I will try to write down all their stories for the next generation so they will know who was commemorated.

Maybe someone can help me with Private Henry G Hardman, Chrshire Regiment 4277750, who died the 1st December 1944, age 23.

Send me a letter or an e-mail with additional information, a photograph or a copy of any personal document, which I can use for The Memory Book or a website. Thank you in advance for your help.

Able Sea. Arthur "Snowy" Hardwick .     Royal Navy HMS Manchester   from Somercotes, Derbyshire

When HMS Manchester was sunk in the Med in October 1942 Arthur Hardwick told me he had to dash up and down the deck to look for a life belt as he could not swim. Having found one he jumped in and was strafed by fighters but luckily was not wounded and managed to reach the Tunisian shore which was only a few hundred yards away.

In the prison camp he remembers one fellow crew member tried to escape and was shot dead. He and his mates received Red Cross parcels from home which kept them going but even so they lost a lot of weight. After six months or so their camp was overrun by the British Army and they were liberated and repatriated back to England. After some leave boarded the Queen Mary liner to Boston USA and had to wait six weeks for the completion of their new ship. This was probably the best time of his life as the American people were incredibly generous and treated them like the heroes they were.

Clifford "Steve" Hardwick .     British Army 7th Armoured Div. Queen's Royal Rgt.

My father, Clifford Hardwick (known as Steve), was in the 7th Armoured Division, Queen's Royal Regiment. He served in North Africa and Italy. He remembered Nobby Clark, Jack Green, Francis Luscombe and John Parker from his war years.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
