(d.25th November 1941)

Henry Hague, aka Harry to his friends and family sadly died aged 25 during the Battle of Tobruk. He is now buried at Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma.

AB. John Hague .     Royal Navy HMS Hunter   from Manchester

It may be of interest to some people to know that in the last couple of days the Royal Navy has located the fin resting place of HMS Hunter, sunk in the first battle of Narvik. I serve onboard HMS Albion at present, and we are conducting a wreath laying ceremony on saturday 8th March 2008 to honour the men who lost thier lives.

The memorial service, consisted on synchronised ceremonies on deck of each ship present and wreath laying over the site of the wreck. After the ceremony, the ships, HMS Albion, HMS Bulwark, HMS Cornwall, RFA Mounts Bay and NOCGV Andenes, all turned in formation and steamed over the wreck, toasting the crew who perished with a tot of rum poured over the side. As we sailed away, we signalled back by Morse: "Farewell, we'll meet again." I'm sure more details will come to light in the near future. Yours aye LMEM "Ned" Kelly

Click here to see some photos of the ceremony

Able Seaman John Hague was a 19-year-old able seaman serving in the shell room below decks. as tehship went down he had no choice but to leap into the icy seas during a blizzard where he trod water until a German ship arrived and picked up survivors. “I am so pleased and overwhelmed to know that after so many years HMS Hunter has been found and my fellow shipmates have a known resting place. I’m so sorry not to be able to go to the wreath- laying but I will be spending a quiet time at home with my family and thoughts, also my daughter in Cornwall will be laying flowers at sea for me dedicated to my shipmates.”

Pte. William Victor Hague .     British Army 4th Btn. Royal East Kent Regiment   from Deptford, London

Fred Hahn .     United States Army 823rd Tank Destoyer Btn

P/O. Lloyd George Hahn .     Royal Canadian Air Force

My Dad, Lloyd Hahn was a POW at Stalag 9C after being shot down in his Lancaster bomber. He was unable to jump as he had been shot through his right arm causing an amputation. They landed in water and the cold water saved him from bleeding out. He relayed a few stories: While in hospital with a name of Hahn they kept asking him to change sides. Of course it was a no. After leaving hospital he was being moved on a bus and he felt someone touch his hand and place something there. When he looked later after quietly putting it in his pocket he found it was a pack of Canadian cigarettes. He had been spotted. When they were liberated from the POW camp the first place they went was the brewery nearby. Being severely underweight it took no time to get inebriated but they were so happy to be free.

Hvldr. Ali Haider VC..     British Indian Army 6th Battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles   from Kohat.

Ali Haidar was a 31 year old Sepoy in the 6th battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles when he was awarded the VC.

"On 9 April 1945 near Fusignano, Italy, at the start of the Allied spring 1945 offensive Haidar's battalion was tasked with a difficult assault crossing of the Senio River. Only Sepoy Ali Haidar and the two other men of his section managed to get across under heavy machine-gun fire. Then, Without orders, and on his own initiative, Sepoy Ali Haidar, leaving the other two to cover him, charged the nearest post which was about 30 yards away. He threw a grenade and almost at the same time the enemy threw one at him, wounding him severely in the back. In spite of this he kept on and the enemy post was destroyed and four of the enemy surrendered. With utter disregard of his own wounds he continued and charged the next post in which the enemy had one Spandau and three automatics, which were still very active and preventing movement on both banks. He was again wounded, this time in the right leg and right arm. Although weakened by loss of blood, with great determination Sepoy Ali Haidar crawled closer and in a final effort raised himself from the ground, threw a grenade, and charged into the second enemy post. Two enemy were wounded and the remaining two surrendered. Taking advantage of the outstanding success of Sepoy Ali Haidar's dauntless attacks, the rest of the Company charged across the river and carried out their task of making a bridgehead. Sepoy Ali Haidar was picked up and brought back from the second position seriously wounded. The conspicuous gallantry, initiative, and determination combined with a complete disregard for his own life shown by this very brave Sepoy in the face of heavy odds were an example to the whole Company. His heroism had saved the rest of the company. With the rapid advance which it was possible to make the Battalion captured 3 officers and 217 other ranks and gained their objectives. The rest of the company were than able to cross the river and establish a bridgehead"

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
