E. K. Hall .

Edith Lilian Hall .     Women's Land Army   from Manchester

Pte. Edmund Robert Hall .     British Army Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders   from Chorley, Shropshire

My Father, Pte Edmund Robert Hall, known as Eddie, served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in North Africa and Italy. He didn't tell me very much about it, I think the memories were too painful but he was immensely proud to have served with this regiment. I have a newspaper cutting from the Shrewsbury News dated 5th May (1945?) towards the end of the war where he had been one of the first group of Eighth Army troops to cross the Senio and had captured a German prisoner. He did tell me, in tears, of an occasion where the piper leading them into battle had been shot and killed. He was also very bitter about being named a 'D-Day Dodger' and I found a flimsy, typed, copy of the words of this song with his papers after he died. I would love to find out more about his history with the Regiment.

Pte. Edward Lawrence "Barney" Hall .     British Army 2nd Btn. Seaforth Highlanders   from Langley Park, Durham

Edward Lawrence Hall was born in 1904 in Durham and joined up aged 21 after a bit of family trouble. I already knew he had served from 1925 to 1933, in India and Palestine, and was recalled for service in 1939. Today I read in his army records that he was in France from 13 Sept 1939 to 16 June 1940, and started Googling the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders for June 1940 as it felt a bit late for Dunkirk.I found various pages including yours and a lot of information about how most of the Battalion surrendered in the face of overwhelming force. My grandad must have escaped however as he was back in England from 17 June 1940 and was sent to Fort George in Scotland where he worked as a Carpenter and Joiner until 1944 when he transferred to the Military Police. He did not serve overseas again.

I suppose I'll never know how he escaped from France, but if anyone can suggest further avenues of research I would be very grateful.

Editor's Note: The 2nd Battalion was part of 152 Brigade, itself part of 51st Highland Division. The Division was further inland along with the French and not encircled at Dunkirk. The 154th Brigade suffered losses but were able to withdraw through central France. The other Brigades 152 and 153 were obliged to surrender along with the Divisional Commander at St Valery. Quite a few escaped on marches to POW Camps and it is recorded that 134 of the escapees who made it back to the UK by June 1941 were Seaforth Highlanders. Fort George near Inverness in Scotland was the Divisional Depot and a new Division formed and trained therefrom the 9th Division and survivors from France was formed and trained there being finally ready for action and embarking for Egypt in June 1942.

L/Cpl. Edward Hall .     British Army 9th Btn. Royal Northumberland Fusiliers   from Sunderland

Gnr. Fred Hall .     Royal Air Force 76 Squadron   from Eccles

His final unit from 16th October 1944 was with 76 Squadron. The amazing thing about the crew he was with - Dad, Kit, Jim, Willie, Jock, Norman and Johnny was that they all survived the war.

One of the crew was writing a book and was in correspondence with my Dad, but he died in 2000 and I have no information about which member it was. I would love to hear from anyone who can provide me with details.

Pte. Frederick Hall .     British Army 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders   from Bury Lancashire

Geoff Hall .     Royal Air Force 78 Sqd.

LSA(TY) George Hall .     Royal Navy Drake HMS Dipper   from Bolton, Lancs

George Hall was my father. I have recently found his Certificate of History and found he served on HMS Dipper from 17 June 1946 to 15 September 1946. He served in the Navy from 24 September 1942 until 15 September 1946 when he was "Released in Class 'A'. He also served on HMS Colossus from 29 October 1945 to 26 April 1946 when it took part in the evacuation of Japanese prisoners of war, converting the flight deck into a playground for the children. He said he used to make up a crew if a ship came in needing someone. He worked on convoy protection as a depth charge setter.

Pte. George William Hall .     British Army 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment   from West Hoathly, Sussex

George Hall was posted to Malta in 1939 where he was defending Luqa Airfield till November 1942. The 2nd Battalion Royal west Kent Regiment was then posted to North Africa. Records are not clear as to when he was captured but family members have told of capture in Malta. George was then marched and moved by train to Stalag IVf Hartmansdorf Chemnitz. Records first list George as missing, however, was reported on 16th of November 1943 as Prisoner in German hands. George was later set free and left the forces in 1946. Not much is know of his time in the battalion but if anyone knows of George please add your stories and comments.

Pte. George Henry Hall .     British Army 5th Btn. Royal Norfolk Regiment   from Dereham, Norfolk

My great uncle, George Hall, was born in Cwmbran, South Wales and was one of 9 or 10 siblings who were serving in the forces during WW2. He enlisted in 1929, and was posted/stationed in Dereham, Norfolk, where he married Ivy E Ashman in 1935.

When war broke out, he was with the 5th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment and, after the Japanese entered the war in December 1941, they were transported overseas to Singapore to defend the Island. Unfortunately, it was overrun and after it fell in February 1942 he became a POW in Thailand, where he spent the rest of the war until liberated in late August 1945. Within that time, he was first a prisoner at the infamous Changi Jail POW camp, then at various others, whilst being forced to work on the Death Railway in terrible conditions.

From his liberation, the family are unsure of what become of him, and I would like find out more about him and his life before, during and after the war, if possible, so if anybody knew him, the Battalion, where he lived etc., or could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Unfortunately, I haven't got a photo of him or the Battalion. Thanks in advance.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
