About
Peter Jackson . Royal Air Force RAF Regiment
My name is Peter Jackson. I am a 1924 model. I served in the RAF Regiment from 1942 until 1944 when I transferred to an infantry battalion (Scots Guards). I volunteered to transfer because of the C.O.
For some months I was stationed at Bardney with an A.A. flight. The guns we had were twin Brownings which we never had occasion to fire. We were used many times to assist the armourers in the 'bombing up' of the aircraft. This meant that after breakfast we would to to the bomb dump and, under supervision of the armourers, unpack incendiaries from the factory crates and pack them in the containers to be put on the aircraft. After an early lunch we went to the dispersal points where the loaded bomb trolleys would be waiting. Two of us would be allotted to each aircraft, each of us with a hand operated winch. The noses of the winches would lock into any of the several shaped outlets in the floor of the fuselage, above the bomb bay. The cable within the winch would be pulled down by an armourer and attached to either an incendiary container or an HE (high explosive) which would then be raised up into the bomb bay. Most of us 'regiment types' found this a welcome change from the boring hours on a gun post. Little or no thought was given to the aircrew, and the danger they would face in delivering this cargo, or to those on the receiving end.
I clearly remember how us 'regiment types' used to think what an untidy lot the aircrew were - their tunics unbuttoned, hands in pockets, sometimes wearing scarves and smoking. Whereas we had to be 'properly' dressed at all times. It was not until many years later that I came to realise just what it would have meant to have the courage to be one of them.
I saw action as an infantryman in Europe. Believe me, I would serve as such any time rather than be aircrew. Theirs was an outstanding form of courage. Aircrew have my greatest respect.

Robert E. "Bob" Jackson . United States Army from Philadelphia, PA
He served with the Army in World War II from 1941 to 1945, including 40 months in an anti-aircraft artillery unit in the South Pacific.
But Bob was not thrilled with his duties as the war in the Solomon Islands raged about him. He was assigned to an anti-aircraft unit, but, being a black man, he was not allowed in combat.
"He was very angry," his daughter said. "He wanted action. He used to say he served 40 months in the South Pacific and wasn't allowed to fight."
Pte. Ronald Stanley "Ron" Jackson . British Army 4th Btn., B Coy. Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry from 35 Crusoe Road, Mitcham, Surrey
My Grandfather Ron Jackson was captured at Cassel, France with his unit B Coy, 4th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 30th of May 1940 while providing rear guard duty to slow the Germans while the evacuation was taking place at Dunkirk.
He spent the rest of the war in POW camps, until he escaped on the 24th of January 1945. His escape would have occurred during the time Germans were evacuating POW's as the Red Army pushed down through Poland and into Germany. The Death Marches occurred during this time - so by choosing to escape he avoided those marches to other camps. He avoided capture until 11th of March 1945 when he and 2 other POW's, Roland Easton and George Moyes were picked up by Russian Troops. After being away since his last leave of 5 May 1940, he finally returned home on the 5th of May 1945.
LAC. Roy Jackson MBE, DFM.. Royal Air Force 51 Squadron from Burnley, Lancashire
My father, Roy Jackson, was 19 years old when stationed in Dishforth in 1939 and during this time he met my mother, Florence Marshall Dykes, who lived in York and was just 16 years old. He used to ride his motorcycle in all weathers to see her. They married in 1941 and remained so until my father's death in 2003. He left the RAF post war but returned in the 1950's, retiring in 1972 having attained the rank of Wing Commander. At the time of writing (2017), my mother, Florence, is alive and well, aged 94.
On the 27th October, 1939, Roy Jackson, then aged 19, was a member of the crew of the Whitley Mk III K8984 that had to be abandoned due to severe icing on return to Dishforth, following a leaflet-dropping mission to Munchen, at 1805 hrs near Villeneuve-les-Vertus, France.
Alfred Adair (Griff) Griffin - Rear gunner, failed to hear the order to bale out and was still in his turret when the aircraft crashed. He survived the ordeal with little more than cuts and bruises. On returning to the UK, Roy brought back a bottle of Eau de Cologne for my mother that she has to this day. It was never opened but the contents have long since evaporated.
In this photo, King George VI pays a visit to meet Griff and the crew. Left to Right Wng Cdr Sylvester?, King Georg VI, Sgt Thomas (Johnny) William Bowles - Pilot baled out, Sgt Alan Arnold (Bill) Emery - Copilot baled out, Sgt Edmund John (Ali) Barber - baled out, AC1 Roy (Jacko) Jackson - baled out and Sgt Alfred Adair (Griff) Griffin - Rear Gunner injured.

Tom Charlesworth Jackson . British Army 69th (West Riding) Field Regiment Royal Artillery from 11 Station Terrace, Bramley
Whilst sorting out personal papers of my mother's, I came across a letter from her brother Tom Jackson to his parents. The letter has Iceland Wed.31 in the heading (no year). It's just a general letter informing his parents of his safe arrival and says the place is not so bad but going into shops is a bit of a devil with the foreign money and the lingo. Tom requested some razor blades and a sheath knife be sent over. He says letters were now censored so he couldn't tell them what he thought of Adolph, the so and so. He ends with Cheerio all my love, Your loving son, Tom

Warren William Jackson . Canadian Army 27th Armoured Regiment Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment
The only information I have on Bill Jackson is that he once dated my mother before she met my father, and I simply want to make sure he is not forgotten by providing this photograph. The inscription on the back simply says "Warren (Bill) Jackson, met at Lakefield Quebec 1943". I have not been able to find any record to verify his actual name, so his name may be William Warren, or Warren William Jackson, but I did research the badge on his beret, and it appears he was with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment.
