World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Alain Jacopin .     French Army   from Brest, France

My grandfather, Alain Jacopin, French Infantry, was made POW in Nieuport in May 1940 and crossed Holland and was sent to directly to Luckenwalde. He was released in 1945. I went to Luckenwalde a couple of weeks ago and felt really bad when I saw that a part of a cemetery that receives lots of care, there is nothing to remind one of the Stalag 3A.

I would like to know more about this period, people who knew my grandfather.

Douglas Harold Morton Jacques .     Royal Canadian Air Force 214 Squadron   from Canada

(d.15th April 1942)

My mother died last month & in her possesions was a silver name tag inscribed "Wings June 21st 1941 Jarvis, Ont.", on the other side "Doug H M Jaques WAG RCAF". My mother had told me of a boyfriend she had met while in the WRAFS who had died in action in April 1942. I suspect this was a serious relationship as newspapers & magazines from this date were also in mother's things. Mother was shortly afterwards invalided out of the WRAFs. She married an English captain in 1946 but kept these mementos for 71 years.

Cpl. Francisco Xavier Jacques .     United States Army Air Forces 338th Squadron 96th Bomb Group   from Sweetwater, Texas

Francisco Jacques, my father, entered the military in Abilene, Texas on 18 August 18 1942. He was first trained for B-17 squadron service in Pyote, Texas at the Rattlesnake Base. He was then transferred for further training in Pocatello, Idaho before being transferred by train to New Jersey and then shipped on the Queen Elizabeth to England. He was stationed at Snetterton Heath base for the 8th Army Air Force, 96th Bomb Group, 338th Squadron. His discharge papers incorrectly state that he was in the 805th squadron. Francisco was a waist-gunner and was injured on his sixth mission over Germany. Anti-aircraft damaged the oxygen hoses, and his lungs were traumatized while waiting for the damaged B-17 to return to home base in England. He was hospitalized for a few weeks and then returned to duty on the ground crew. After 6th of June 1944, he served in Europe (France, Belgium, and Germany). He was at one time ranked as a sergeant, but he was reduced to corporal for some minor violation. In 1945 after the war, Francisco was shipped to New York on the Queen Mary, and he then made his way to Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas where he was discharged on 5th of October 1945.

H. V. Jacques .

Hvdr. Namdeo Jadav VC..     British Indian Army 5th Maratha Light Infantry   from Virgaon, Ahamadnagar, Maharashtra, India

Namdeo Jadav was 23 years old, and a Sepoy in the 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, when he was awarded the VC.

"On 9 April 1945 at the Senio River, Italy, when a small party were almost wiped out in an assault on the east floodbank of the river, Sepoy Namdeo Jadav carried two wounded men under heavy fire through deep water, up a steep bank and through a mine belt to safety. Then, determined to avenge his dead comrades, he eliminated three enemy machine-gun posts. Finally, climbing on top of the bank he shouted the Maratha war cry and waved the remaining companies across. He not only saved many lives but enabled the battalion to secure the bridgehead and ultimately to crush all enemy resistance in the area."

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
