RSM Henry William "Harry" Lavender .     British Army The Buffs   from Cumitilery, County Monmouth

My late father, Harry Lavender served in the British Army. I know that the information which I have provided is very sketchy but it's the only bit of information that I have at this present time. The reason why I'm trying to find out any information about my late father is that I am an ex regular soldier retired myself. The last known address of my late father where, I presume he lived, after having been demobed from the army was 68 Belasis Avenue, Haverton Hill, Teesside. Sadly he passed away in 1960. I hardly knew my father as I was quite young when he passed away and it would mean a great deal to me if I could find out anything about his time whilst in the army.

Editor's note: from his army number, we can tell you that Harry Lavender enlisted with The Buffs.

Pte. Henry William John Lavender .     British Army East Kent Regiment   from 133 Alma Street, Cumtillerey, Monmouthshire

My late father Henry Lavender served with the Buff's (East Kent Regiment) I'm trying to find out any information about his military back ground and whether he was awarded any campain medals whilst he served in his Regiment during his time in the Army. I have collated some brief information on line about his military career and also that he may have been a POW duering the Second World War and that he may have been in a POW camp in Poland (Stalag xxa and XXb). However, I have no information what happend after he was liberated and demobed from the Army at the end of the Second World War. I presume that he returned back to his parent's home in Wales. His last known address I have for him is where he settled down into civillan life is where I was born which is 68 Belasis Avenue, Haverton Hill, Billingham, Teeside. But sadly he passed away in 1960. I can only just briefly remember him as I was very young when he passed away and it would be nice to remember him by and to know that he served his country.

(d.3rd Sept 1945)

Pte. J. Lavery .     Army The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders

Pte. Stanley James Lavery .     Australian Imperial Force 2/28th Btn.   from Western Australia

As my father, Stanley Lavery told me: The 2/28th Battalion was surrounded after successfully achieving the objective at Ruin Ridge, El Alamein on 27th-28th of July 1942, and were all taken prisoners by the Germans. We were transported to Benghazi where we were held for 15 days before being transported to Bari, in Italy. We crossed the Mediterranean on the night the Nino Bixio, another transport ship, was hit. On the crossing I organised the men into groups and assisted with passing water down below and pee up on deck in buckets on ropes. At one point someone called out "is this bucket going up or down!" I replied, apparently in a "gruff" voice, "Taste it and see for yourself!!" (other prisoners reminded me of that story after the war). We were 30 days in Bari before being transported to Udine. I spent 4 months in hospital at Udine with pneumonia and the care by the Catholic Nuns was exceptional. After 12 or so months, when the Allies broke through in Italy, the Germans took us to Austria, Stalag 18A, Wolfsberg, where I was assigned to a workcamp, a brickworks at Trieben until the end of the war."

Lavies .     US Army 4th Btn. Transportation Corps   from USA

Sgt. Francis Reginald Law .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 50 Squadron   from Rock, Worcestershire

(d.22nd February 1942)

Frank Law, volunteered for aircrew and was enlisted on the 10th July 1940. He finished his training at 14 OTU RAF Cottesmore and was posted to RAF Swinderby, home to 50 Squadron on the 13th October 1941. The squadron moved to Skellingthorpe, just a few miles down the road in late 41.

He flew his first Op on the 20th October 1941 and settled in to form a regular partnership with Pilot Sgt Ivor Mapp. At this time 50 Squadron were equipped with Hampdens, which had a 4 man crew, Pilot, Observer/Navigator, W/OP/Air Gunner and Rear Gunner. The other two crew members varied but Francis always flew with Ivor Mapp. He flew his first 5 or 6 ops as Rear Gunner, then with some experience under his belt he moved to the Wireless Operator/Air Gunner seat.

He flew some daylight errands, ferrying aircraft for modification, all his 'hostile operations were night flights, except one, on the 12th of February 1942 the German battleships slipped out of a French port and many aircraft were sent out to try and intercept them in the channel. Francis and his crew failed to locate the ships and returned home.

On the 21st February 1942 he took off on Ops to Coblenz, a series of minor mishaps added up and lost and out of fuel the plane crashed near York. Francis Law 14 Ops, Hector Thompson 1st Op and Philip Ballard 12 Ops were killed, Francis and Hector are buried in Thurlby Lincs, Philip is buried in Chartham Kent.

Irene Law was my grandmother. She enlisted with the Auxilliary Territorial Service in Harrogate on the 16th of October 1942 at No. 3 Service Women's Transit Camp. During her time in service she appears to have spent time in Hull, Bradford and York.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
