Trp. Arthur "Tats" Lee .     British Army 48th A Royal Tank Regiment   from Sheffield

My father, Arthur Lee, was captured in Italy on the 4th September 1944. He was with the 48th A Royal Tank regiment. He was the driver of his tank and it was blown up. Only him and his co driver were alive, even though they both had burns on their bodies. The others were killed outright.

They were taken to a Italian Dulag first and then onto German Prison camps. My father was in Stalag X1A and Stalag V11A until they were freed by the Americans. They had to walk for many miles through different German villages until they reached the British who gave them food which had been in short supply whilst a guest with the Germans. He never spoke much about the camps but did say they had to share one loaf between six people sometimes and that he was put out to work on the railway. He was always light hearted about it but never told us the real truth. Dad suffered with his health for the rest of his life. He came home very much under weight and not very healthy. He always said his health had suffered due to being a POW.

My grandfather, Dennis Lee, somehow managed to join up in WW2. It is understood he was in a reserved occupation, so quite why and how he managed to do this remains something of a mystery. It has been relayed to my father that Dennis Lee was shot in the stomach in 4th May 1943 in the closing days of the North African campaign. He succumbed to his wounds on 6th May 1943. It is understood that he was in the region of Bizerta Tunisia. He was buried in a Christian ceremony, but both his dog tags were removed from his body at the time of his original interment. It is not known if the grave was lost or if his remains were located and he was reinterred elsewhere as an unknown soldier, an unkown British soldier or an unknown soldier of the York and Lancaster regiment known unto God. Sgt. George Lee GM..     British Army Black Watch   from York

My father, George Lee, served with the Black Watch during World War 2, landing on D-Day (he hated boats and ships afterwards). I know he fought through France and crossed the Rhine into Germany. He told me he was in the Hartz Mountains and played football for the forces in Germany. Beyond that I don't know a lot apart from the fact that my mother said his commanding officer had said he wished he had 100 more like my Dad! Like many he didn't like to talk about his war experiences much and I had to pry what little I could from him.

He was a professional footballer playing for York City from the age of 14. Following the war he played for Nottingham Forest and then West Bromwich Albion earning a Cup Final cup winners medal in 1954.

L/Cpl. George Ernest Charles Lee .     British Army 1st Btn. Royal Norfolk Regiment   from Essex

Stkr. George William Lee .     Royal Navy HMS Royal Sovereign   from Chopwell, County Durham

George Lee was my grandfather. When I was a child he used to tell me about the parts of the world he had travelled to aboard HMS Royal Sovereign during WW2. Places I recollect are Malta, the Suez Canal, Sierra Leone, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and I think Bombay (Mumbai). I remember him talking about sailors throwing coins into the sea from on board when docked in Sierra Leone and the locals would dive in to retrieve them!

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
