He arrived in Mooseburg, Germany on May 20, 1944 then to Ausburg and Rain, Germany and was finally sent to LeHavre, France before returning home on June 11, 1945. Sgt. Ralph Thomas Gyrden Lester .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 106 Squadron   from Hull, East Yorkshire

(d.9th Oct 1943)

Ralph Lester joined the RAF when he was just seventeen, he lied about his age of course; He was a Flight Sergeant and was lost over Hanover, Germany 9 Oct 1943, when he was 18. He would go on leave in an aircraftsman uniform and told his mother he was a mechanic; she only found out the truth the day or so before he was lost. She herself joined the WAAFs and she was then over 43. Ralph is buried in Hanover War Cemetery.

Roy Dixmunde Lester .     Royal Air Force pilot

Roy Dixmunde Lester, my grandfather, was a pilot from New Zealand. I know he was at No 7 Flight Instructor School at Netherton, Wiltshire and I am trying to find out more about him.

I am currently working on the family history for Andrew J. Lesyinski. Corporal Lesyinski was a POW at 3b from Oct '43 to June '45, as listed by the National Archives Database in the USA. He passed away in 1980 and I am eager to learn more about him and about the camp. I was delighted to find your website and appreciate what you are doing.

AB George Owen Lethaby .     Royal Navy HMS Cormorant   from Lynton, Devon

Thomas William Lett .     British Army Leicesershire Regiment

Thomas Lett served in the Royal Leicestershire regiment. He was a dog handler.

FO Robert Wiliam John Letters .     Royal Air Force 90 Squadron (d.30th May 1943)

This is information I received from my late mother, who was engaged to Bob Letters during the war. Bob then asked the Radio Operator to contact the Germans in Northern France to direct them to a place away from homes, so they could land. The Germans directed them to a field on the edge of Cambrai. Bob told the crew to bail out, some did, but the Radio Operator, I think, was one who did not. Just about when they landed the Sterling exploded and the remains of the bodies were scattered. The people of Cambrai were told the story and after the war they made a memorial in gratitude. When Bob's remains were found they were buried in a local cemetery.

Gladys Letton .     Women's Land Army   from Bristol

My mother was from Bristol and talked so much of her time in the W.L.A. Her sister remembers her being away a lot, but we only have one picture of her in uniform. Please help. Can anyone remember her?

Sgt. George Albert Letts .     Royal Air Force

I have reason to believe that my grandfather,Sgt George Albert Letts spent some time at RAF Methwold in June 1944, and was wondering if anyone has any information.

William Letts .     Royal Navy HMS Vulture   from Northam, Nr Bideford, North Devon

I am a writer trying to find out about HMS Vulture during the years 1942-52 for a book I am writing. The person in question is now deceased, Bill Letts, who was based there during these years. I thought Vulture was a ship but find it is a naval airbase. Does this mean he couldn't have sailed on a ship called this? (I know there was an SS Vulture that sailed, but that was before these dates and he was on HMS not SS.) If anyone can help me understand a bit more about this, I would be most grateful. Also, does anyone know of a naval school at nearby Newquay for the children of naval personnel during this time and later? Any help would be most welcome.

Henry Harvey LeVaillant .     New Zealand Army   from New Zealand

My grandfather was a POW in Stalag 8b/344.

CPO Kenneth Stanley Lever .     Royal Navy Sick Berth Attendant HMS Penelope   from Rochdale

My Father was taken into the navy as a sick berth attendant, but was actually wanted for his background in engineering. At the time the Navy had quota's and the officer recruiting him said he would obviously be retrained given his background education (he was later a P/O trained as a diver, and CPO articifer serving on HMS Montclaire in the Pacific)

However, he was onboard Penelope in Malta as a sick berth attendant whilst the ship was in drydock. She was constantly being bombed and most of the crew were ashore sheltering. During the many raids the ship was running short of antiaircraft shells, my Dad strapped on a shell carrier and brought ammunition from ashore for the 5 inch HA guns. The gunnery officer had him recommended for a "mentioned in despatches" This was sent by the captain to the admiral in Malta, who forwarded it to London where it was conveniently forgotten, or disallowed. In the book 'Our Penelope' his name has the asterix mentioned in despatches, but only in the book given to the crew. The same book on general release the mention is omitted.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
