WO1. John Lines .     British Army 10th Hussars Royal Armoured Corps   from Birmingham

(d.10th Jun 1940)

WO1 John Lines was my mother's first husband, I don't know his story but but I'm told he went to Dunkirk, was sent on a special mission with 7 other NCO's. They were ambushed and shot. Their graves are in a small village St. Pierre-du-Vauvray near Rouen and Evreux in France. I have visited the cemetery and was impressed with how well kept the 8 graves were. I only wish I had noted the names of the other soldiers lying there.

Able.Sea. William Stephen Lloyd Linfield .     Royal Navy HMS Dasher   from Twillingate, Newfoundland

(d.27th Mar 1943)

Able Seaman William Stephen Lloyd Linfield was my grandfather's 1st cousin. He lost his life in the explosion and sinking of the HMS Dasher, March 27, 1943. He was the son of Albert Stanley Harbin and Flora(Masters)Harbin. His mother died shortly after his birth and his father's sister Hannah and her husband, Edward John Linfield, agreed to care for him since they had no son of their own. Eventually, Lloyd's father remarried to Susan Payne and they had three sons, Ernest, Roy and Doug. Lloyd remained with Hannah ("Nan")and Edward ("Ned"). Edward became a prominent businessman and hoped Lloyd would one day inherit his business but that was not to be. With the outbreak of WWII Lloyd decided to join up and was formally adopted at that time. He was a likeable and very popular young man and his death was a terrible blow to his family and friends. Edward never got over it and seemed to lose interest in his business as a result.

Cpl. Charles "Bill" Lings .     British Army 2nd Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment   from 30 Lowlands Road, Blackwater

Poem: D-Day, A Soldier's Rhyme by Charles Lings, 5th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment

The 5th Division would have to pay with life and limb on this fateful day,

2nd Battalion was no exception, made up of men with no exemption;

4th Company, first platoon, in landing-craft and not too soon,

Shells were falling among the ships, "God help them!" was on our lips,

Code-named "Red-King", that's the "target beach",

Sands in morning light, soon to reach.

Squaddies in battle dress, standing in the stinking mess,

with your body full of stress, breathing like an old steam press,

the sea heaves you to and fro, as does the ramp that lets you go;

into a "hell" beyond belief, you watch your buddies come to grief,

with shrapnel flying all around, it's only safe, close to the ground;

you cannot fall and hide your face, orders are "forward" into the "race"

a race that ends in "All fall down!", to reach the wall above the town.

Now the Very lights are a-popping, to let you know the guns are stopping,

with boots full of water, gaiters full of sand, you wish for England -

not this foreign land;

"Get through the bloody wire!" the sergeant shouts at me;

the subleton, wet and shaking says: "No, we go all three.

Out of the platoon of twenty-five, there's only us left alive!"

Look back and see the mines a-jumping, and the mortar bombs a-thumping, f

alling among the men you knew; then the orderlies come dashing through,

the M42's are "hissing" and "singing"; soon the death-tolls are a ringing;

finally, the tanks arrive; odds-on now we will survive.

Soon you rest and take a breath and know how close you came to death,

eat the grub and drink your tea, think about mates you will never see,

For them that mourn loved-ones true, crosses in a foreign field, won't do;

only those there at the time, will appreciate this, a soldier's rhyme'.

Stwd. Percy Raymond Linsey .     Royal Navy LST.420   from Flintham, Newark

(d.7th Nov 1944)

I have been researching my uncle Percy Linsey who died in active service on the 7th of November 1944. He was travelling to the Walcheren Islands on LST420. As they were trying to land in heavy seas it became impossible. So they were instructed to return to England. As they were leaving Walcheren, unfortunately, they hit a mine and the craft broke up.

I have had quite a good response over the last few years. However I have come to a standstill. I was just looking on this website and spotted all the Royal Arthur pictures. I don't know if my uncle is on any of the pictures. I would be gratefull for any copies of any group photos.

My uncle was Percy Raymond Linsey, he served on: HMS Royal Arthur from 4th of May 1943, HMS DrakeII from 8th June 1943, HMS LakerII from 20th August 1943, HMS Caroline, HMS Domett from 20 September 1943 and LST 420 until 7th of November 1944.

Any other information would also be helpful and appreciated.

L/Cpl. John Wilson Linstrum .     British Army 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders   from Glasgow

Jackie Linstrum is my late Father who enlisted in 1931 and with the British Expeditionary Force to France, where he was taken prisoner and spent 5 years as a prisoner of war.

He would never talk about his time as a POW and I have been researching his time in the service with help from my cousin. I know he sailed on the HM Troopship Nevassa to India and was also in the Sudan early in his army career from 1934 to 1939 and went to France 29th of September 1939 with the B E F. Other than that I am still researching his service to King and country. I am now 70yrs old and still hoping to find more about his ordeal.

Leonard John Lintern .     British Army Royal Army Ordnance Corps   from Norwich

Leonard Lintern was my beloved grandfather who refused to talk about his wartime experiences so I would love to know if anyone has more info. He did tell one story about waking up in the night needing a pee, plodding off to the latrines, hearing gunshots in the dark and ducking down in the ditch. When he got back to the remains of his tent there were bullet holes in his 'pillow' and two of his comrades were no longer alive. That would have been two of those in the 'before' picture whose signatures can be seen. His unit was on the retreat in France, coming off at Dunkirk and the bigwigs shipped the unit back to Bristol to rebuild and recover.

Sgt. David Henry "Dickie" Lintin .     British Army 4th Btn. Lincolnshire Regiment   from Spalding, Lincs

My grandfather joined the 4th Lincs (TA) Rgt in 1924 at a time when it wasn't a popular thing to do but he always told me it got him a free holiday for two weeks of the year and a free pair of boots. Despite being quite short his skill at arms got him to the rank of sergeant by the early 1930's.

He was mobilised at the end of May 1939 and posted to Grimbsy at the official outbreak of war in September 1939. In 1940 he was posted to France just in time to join the retreat of the BEF. Luckily he managed to hitch a lift on an old French trawler some two days after the Dunkirk evacuation was ended (having spent the time being hidden in a local convent by friendly nuns). On his return to the UK he was waylaid by friends and taken to the local pub to celebrate his escape. My grandmother, meanwhile, had received a telegram from the War Office, listing her husband as missing in action. On being told by a neighbour that he was in the pub she lost no time chasing him out of the Black Swan armed with a frying pan!

My grandfather subsequently volunteered for the RA Maritime Service and travelled on the City of Manchester DEMS via the Cape to Singapore just in time to be sunk off Djillichap in the Dutch East Indies. After a extended stay in Australia (I still have an Australian half-crown he was given for singing 'Roll-out the barrel' at the local legion branch) he made his way safely home.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
