About
Henry Horace Lockyear . Royal Navy HMS Nigeria
My father served on HMS Nigeria. His name was Henry Horace Lockyear, and I know that he served on the ship when it was in the Far East. His friend, Ron Harris, and my landlord's father, Gifford, although I don't know his initials, both served with him.
I would love to receive mail from anyone who remembers my father. He died last year.
PO.Art. John George William Lockyer MID. Royal Navy HMS Adventure from Plymouth
John Lockyer was my grand father who I never met. But my dad has told me of a situation where my grand father worked hard with his engine room staff to get the broken down engines of the ship going to avoid sinking from enemy fire. My grandad served on more than one ship during WW2 but we are not sure if the above mentioned incident was on the HMS Adventure or another ship. He was awarded the MiD for his gallantry act and survived WW2. He sadly passed away around 1986 in Devon.
Staff Sargent Philip Lodato . US Army Company F, 100th Division 399 Infantry

AFO. Denis Lodge . Royal Naval Air Service 794 Squadron from Sheffield
Denis Lodge served at H.M.S. Vulture and with 749 Squadron RNAS. I don’t know much about my father’s service record, I found this ID card among my mother’s effects.
Sgt. Ernest Lodge . British Army 413th Battery, 54th Searchlight Regiment Royal Artillery from Swinton
As everyone who knew Ernest Lodge and his story properly have passed away I am telling a story I have heard but I am not sure it is a complete truth. His regiment was sent to the Netherlands for an operation but did not realise that a field of tanks was waiting for the British planes. My great-grandfather Ernest landed without any artillery, alive. He apparently punched a German soldier so hard he then ran into a nearby barn to hide for three days. That barn was owned by a Dutchman and British women from Yorkshire (that I still have a photograph today). He was saved, then got back to his regiment (or from what was left) and was imprisoned for desertion. Then it goes really fuzzy and I can't go further. I have his soldier service and pay book, photographs and his soldier release book. I am including a photo. Ernest Lodge, my great-grandfather, is bottom middle of the picture.

Sgt. Ottiwell Francis Lodge . Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 106 Sqdn. from Manchester
(d.9th July 1942)
I have been researching the name Ottiwell Lodge as it relates strongly to an area of the Yorkshire Dales. I came across the probate record of Ottiwell Francis Lodge and it has led me to the recording of his death at the Runnymede Memorial and to this site. He was 21 when he died; his parents, Ottiwell and Mary lived in Levershulme, Manchester. I'm assuming he was in a bomber crew that didn't come back. I would like to know more.

They were unable to stop the bleeding or get him to a hospital in time. He is buried in Assisi in Italy, where I have visited the war graves which are in the most beautiful setting. Sapper Bill Logan . British Army No 1 Pipeline Maintenance Royal Engineers
My father fought through the Africa, Sicily and Italy campaigns. He was attached to No. 1. Pipeline Maintenance.
Sgt. Daniel Logan . Royal Canadian Air Force 419 Sqd.
This is a photo of the hut used by "D" crew. The photo is one my dad, Daniel Logan has, but was also printed in a book about 30 years ago. Names as far as I know are from L to R: F/O RV Daly, LAC Jerry Greeves, AC Frank Beaves, LAC Vic Hewitt, Sgt. N C Fraser, Corp. Don Mersereau, F/L AJ ByFord, Sgt. Danny Logan, Ken Barter (no rank noted)
This one with Dad in the ground crew with some flight crew behind was on F/O Calders crew, I only have the names of 2 of the ground crew, front row third from left Cpl. Don Mersereau and Sgt Danny Logan , for some reason the rest of the ground crew are unnamed. My Dad had a supersition about putting flight crew names on photos so they are not mentioned on this one. In fact they were not listed on the photo of the hut, the names came from the book. This Lancaster was lost sometime in late 1944 with a different crew on board or so I think?

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
