Warrant Officer Patrick William Northway . RAAF 460 Squadron from Perth
My father, Patrick Northway, as a POW in Italy helped build a Church near Udine. He had a photograph of it but had not himself seen the finished product. He wanted me to see it on my travels in Europe in the early 1970s but I was on an organised COntiki tour and was not able to reach Udine. This year my sons are giving me a holiday in Italy for my 60th birthday and we are definitely going to visit the Church and the POW campo 57. One of my sons, TOby, has some some research on the Camp. I know this is going to be a very emotional visit and sadly, Dad will only know I've finally achieved his wish, by looking down from Heaven. Like most returned servicemen, Dad did not speak much of the war. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club as he was taken prisoner in the Middle East while parachuting to safety from his burning aircraft. He was a rear gunner. Dad died in very sad circumstances, after a heart attack when he was 69, his mind went due to oxygen not getting through to his brain, and when he died in Hollywood Hospital, he was 'back in the POW camp'. He had to be restrained because he tried to strangle the poor old bloke in the next bed. No-one should ever have to endure anything like that. No physical wounds, but permanent mental scarring. Thank you for letting me share. I for one, and my brothers and sons, am very proud of my Dad but I never told him!! How common is that? Kathleen

Donald Norton, my grandad, was a miner after the war and became foreman of props at Walkden Yard. I was going through his paperwork when I found his discharge papers. Pte. George Norton . British Army Seaforth Higlanders from Barnsley, Yorkshire
George Norton was my uncle, my father's brother; I would be interested in any info or pictures that might be available about him. Our family know very little about the time he spent as a POW, as understandably he would not talk about it. Any help would be much appreciated. I would be particularly interested to find out which POW camp he was in after he was captured, so that I might be able to build a picture of his experiences.
Sgt. George Henry Norton . Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 57 Squadron from Ipswich
(d.4th May 1943)
L/Cpl. George Thomas Norton . British Army 2nd Btn. Grenadier Guards from Burton-on-Trent
My father, George Norton always told his war stories. One was particularly horrific to us, but astonishing to him. I don't know where this happened, but his tank was caught by a land-mine and lost its tracks. Making sure his men got out, he sustained some bad burns to his legs and arms. He then jumped out and started to run across a cornfield. His best friend passed him, shouting "They might have my foot, but they're not getting me!".
Capt. Gerard Ross Norton VC, MM.. South African Forces Kaffrarian Rifles from South Africa
Gerard Ross Norton was 28 years old, and a lieutenant in the Kaffrarian Rifles, South African Forces, attached to 1/4th Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment when was awarded the VC.
"On 31 August 1944 during the attack on Montegridolfo, Italy, Lieutenant Norton's platoon was pinned down by heavy fire. On his own initiative and with complete disregard for his own safety, he advanced alone and attacked the first machine-gun emplacement, killing the crew of three. He then went on to the second position containing two machine-guns and 15 riflemen, and wiped out both machine-gun nests, killing or taking prisoner the remainder of the enemy. Throughout these attacks he was continuously under fire from a self-propelled gun, nevertheless he calmly went on to lead his platoon against the remaining enemy positions."

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
