Joseph Alfred New .     British Army Seaforth Highlanders   from Dudley, West Midlands

I've just been given this photograph of my Grandad, Joseph Alfred New, who was a POW in Stalag IXC. From what I can gather from family stories he worked in the Saltmines and attempted escape on numerous occasions. He was from Dudley in the West Midlands and was captured in St Valéry in 1940. He is the gentleman bottom center of the picture. Unfortunately, due to the age of the picture and creases we have had to have the picture repaired, and as a result he may look slightly different.

He has passed on now, but I would love to hear from anyone who recognises any relatives or friends in the picture and has any interesting tales to tell which may have involved my Grandad. Please get in touch if you know anything which may be of interest to myself and my family.

Sgt John James Newbon .     Royal Air Force 419 Squadron   from Manchester

(d.18th Aug 1943)

Halifax JD158 was the sixteenth of a series of thirty-eight Halifax Mk. II aircraft of the JD series to be manufactured by English Electric Company (Salmesbury & Preston) between May 7th and June 28th of 1943. It first shows on the Operations Record Book on May 23rd. of that year and designated as VR-D.

From that date until July 13th VR-D was the aircraft normally flown by F/O Chick McIntosh and his crew, who had several encounters with night fighters during that time. McIntosh flew ten operations on JD158 before completing his Tour. From July through to August 12th the Halifax with the triple headed dragon was flown by S/L McMurdy and his crew.

On the night of August 17/18th 1943 the captain of JD158 was F/L Stanley Heard who normally flew JB859 "Thundering Heard", but the aircraft was not available that night. (It has been mentioned in some sources that JD158 may have also been VR-H "Have Another" at some point in the time this Halifax was at 419 Squadron. Log Books and ORB for May through August 1943 show JD158 to be on strength with the squadron throughout that period. There is no gap found where it may have been removed from service, which is the only way that any other squadron code would be changed to another letter. From May 23rd to it's loss on August 17/18th records show JD158 was always VR-D.) Also the art work for "Have Another" shows a Kangaroo and a Joey riding a bomb, the explanation given for the use of these animals was that one of F/L Heard's men was Australian. Except for Sgt.Blyth and Sgt. Newborn, who both were RAF, all others of the Heard crew were Canadian. (There was an Australian pilot performing his second 2nd. pilot sortie with F/L Heard when the crew was lost which may have provided some confusion.) So from this information it looks like "Have Another" was not JD158 but another Halifax -H, most likely not 419 Squadron that I can find.

Edward Newell is my nan's uncle. He was a gunner in the Royal Artillery who died in 1942. He is commemorated on the El Alamein Memorial as he was missing in action, although on some records it lists him as buried at sea. Also, his theatre of war is on some records listed as at sea. Unfortunately, we do not know much about him, but that isn't for lack of trying.

(d.16th February 1944)

He was 30 when he was killed in a flying Battle and is buried in Row 9. Grave 8 in the Kappel Churchyard in Denmark.

Spr. Sidney Newell .     British Army Royal Engineers   from Lofthouse, Wakefield

(d.13th June 1945 )

My great uncle Sid Newell was killed, as far as we know, on his way home from Italy. We have visited the grave twice now. He is buried in Arezzo, Tuscany. We would like to find out how he met his end, after fighting his way through Italy. My grandad, his brother told me when he was alive that his brother Sid was sabotaged on a train home. I have his medals which include Africa Star and Italy Star.

VW Newell .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

Able.Sea. Cyril Thomas Newey .     Royal Navy HMS Barford

I am trying to find anyone who served on HMS Barford during WWll, because I cannot find anything about this ship which my dad served on in October 1943. We think this ship was based in Gibraltar or Malta. My dad's name was Able Seaman Cyril Thomas Newey. We know he was shipped off to the Pacific between October 1944 to 1945. But between 1944 to 1945 I don't know anything he did out there, as my dad died when I was a child and no one can tell me anything.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
