About
Pte. Nelson Robert Owen . British Army 7th Btn. Royal Norfolk Regiment from Heacham
My father, Nelson Robert Owen, was born in Heacham, Norfolk on the 4th of November 1918. He served with the 7th Royal Norfolk Regiment during the 2nd World War. He was captured at St.Valery on the 12/06/1940. His prisoner of war number was 15877. He was held in Stalag XXA in Poland.
Due to my father dying in 1971 at the age of 52 (I was only 13 years old) I didn't ever really get to hear anything much about his time as a prisoner of war etc. But one thing I do remember is him telling me about his friend (who later became a close family friend) John Hagen, who since the war lived near Melton Constable, Norfolk. He had one Christmas Eve when it was bitterly cold and snowing, picked up his banjo and played 'Silent Night'. Afterwards everyone was completely quiet and silence remained for quite some time, as obviously everyone was feeling very homesick and thinking of family back home. John Hagen had also told me how he had worked in the kitchen and also in the brewery at the camp, where they would prepare the food for the German's, and would regularly urinate in the soup! If anyone can remember anything about my father, please add to this message.

He was living at 1 Te-Arai Avenue, St Kilda ,East Victoria, Australia at that time and was working as an Insurance Inspector.
On 15th of April 1940 he arrived in Khartoum as part of the 2/17th Army Infantry Battalion. He subsequently served in Palestine, North Africa and Crete as Corporal in charge of a motorised Vickers Machine Gun Unit. He was reported missing in action during August 1942. On 27th of October 1942 the Red Cross advised Australian Forces that he had been taken Prisoner of War and moved Stalag VIIIB Lansdorf. On 10th of April 1945 the camp was liberated and by 13th of May 1945 he was moved to the UK. He was billeted in Eastbourne, Sussex until 22nd September 1945 when he left for Melbourne via Gibraltar arriving home on 17th October 1945. Able Sea. William Owen . Royal Navy HMS Indefatigable
My Dad Bill Owen was on the communications between the aircraft and the carrier, HMS Indefatigable but had to be relieved from duty as being a northerner as the pilots could not understand him. On the day of the kamikaze hit, the position he would have occupied, if he had not have been demoted, was hit by the plane and his replacement was killed. He had a good friend, Eddie Dolan, who later married his wife Edna's sister. Any information would be welcome.

Fus. Idris Owens . British Army Royal Welch Fusiliers
Idris Owens was held in StalagXXIB,
Pte. James Owens . British Army Cheshire Regiment from Bebibngton
I have some details about my late father-in-law, James Owens. He was a gunner in the Cheshire Regiment, captured 29th of May 1940 and survived 5 years as a POW (acted as interpreter, thereby earning 'extras' despite knowing no German until he arrived at the camp). He later became part of the Long March into Germany as the war began to end during which many prisoners and some German guards died too from exhaustion, starvation and hyperthermia.
I have his service and pay book and a book gifted to him during his time as a POW by Red Cross entitled, The Autobiography of a Chinese Girl, which has a kind of official sticker: "P/W 467. Pte. J. Owens Stalag XXID (13)" While he was grateful, at the time, for such a gift, he never read it! I also have his memoires of his war which he recorded by hand 1984 and were later typed up but remain unedited.
He married 1950 and had a son, my late husband. He died aged 74 in 1993. I believe his privations and experiences as prisoner, held for 5 years scarred him terribly. He had a recurring nightmare about losing his pack. He suffered flash-backs and depression, classic PTSD symptoms but of course, like his fellows, he never complained. He did not seem to bear any grudges against Germans either.
It makes me laugh to recall how when news of Allied defeats and Nazi victories etc were announced at roll call, the prisoners would cheer wildly much to the bewilderment of the guards who never got British humour.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
