My uncle, Sergeant a/g Jack Douglas Olding, RAF was killed in action on 1st May, 1943, somewhere over Germany. He is buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Nordrhein, Westfalen.
I would like to know in which raid he was taking part and in what type of plane he was flying when he died. Any other information would also be much appreciated, such as how old he was at the time of his death. As far as I know, he has no other family left for me to ask.

Flt.Sgt. Claudius William Samuel Oliver . Royal Australian Air Force from North Bondi, NSW, Australia
(d.11th August 1942)
Flight Sergeant Claudius Oliver was the son of William Samuel and Madeleine Evelyn de Jersey Oliver of North Bondi, New South Wales, Australia. He was 22 when he died and is buried in the Larvik Civil Cemetery in Norway.
Sgt. Desmond Stuart Oliver . British Army Welch Regiment from Ystradgynlais
My father, Desmond Oliver signed up at 17 in 1942 and served with the Welsh Regiment in Greece and Palestine until 1946/47. After basic training, he was assigned to REME. He may have also been involved in raids on radar installations in Norway.
He had four girls so war stories were not deemed appropriate and as a result, I know little else other than that his best friends who survived the actual war were killed in Palestine. I only recollect the name, Demsey, who I assume is Terrance Demsey from Ireland who was killed at that point. He was devastated especially after three years of combat.
If anyone can help fill in the gaps it would truly be appreciated. Diolwch y'n fawr..... my cymraeg is rusty so pls forgive any errors.

Pte. Edward Oliver . British Army 2/5th Btn. Leicestershire Regiment from East London
(d.17th Jan 1944)
I know very little about my father, Edward Oliver, I was just two years old when he was killed at Monte Cassino. My mother found it very hard to talk about him and remained a war widow for fifty five years. I have often wondered why he was in the Tigers as he always lived in the East end of London and, as I understand, never went to Leicester at all.
My family and I have visited Cassino several times and are members of the Monte Cassino society. We were shocked to see that, at the age of 29, he was one of the oldest men in the cemetery.

My Mum served in the land army around Watford in the Bedmond area, she often told us stores of how she and her friends visited injured Soldiers at Leavesden Hospital where she met my Dad who was in the Canadian 12th Manitoba Dragoons and was injured in France and sent to Leavesden Hospital. She went to Canada on her own on the Lucitania and Dad followed. My sister was born in Canada but Mum wanted to come back home to England and they settled back in Watford, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary almost in the same spot where they met during the war in my house which was built on the grounds of the old hospital. Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
