PG Pratt .     British Army

PG Pratt served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Ronald Pratt .     Royal Navy HMS Penelope

My Dad Ronald Pratt served on HMS Penelope during WW2. He rarely ever spoke of his time in the War. He was onboard when the ship went to USA for refit and I recall she held a very important place in his heart. I think he said the Captain suffered from Sea sickness also. I have a photo of my Dad and some other crew that got Christened or Baptised in the USA.

Stephen Henry Pratt .     British Army 2nd Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment

Stephen Pratt centre wearing V necked jumper

Stephen Pratt was my maternal grandfather; it would appear from the photographs I have that he was in the Dorsetshire Regiment. My father tells me that Stephen was at Dunkirk, so if he was indeed Dorsetshires this would make him 2nd Battalion. I would love to know if anyone can date the photos and confirm if it is the Dorsetshire Regiment.

Pte. William James Sidney "Bill" Pratt .     Canadian Army Queens Own Cameron Highlanders   from Winnipeg

My grandfather, Bill Pratt, was captured at Dieppe on August 8, 1942 and arrived at Stalag VIIIB on September 1, 1942. He spoke very little of his experiences in the POW camp. I can recall only a few stories related to the poor food and lumber camps outside the barrack where the POW's hunted hares for food when the guards were unaware. I have his wartime journal filled with poems describing battle and artwork, much of it sketched by a South African POW by the name of A.H Pienaar.

G Pratt. .     428 Sqd.

L/Cpl. Jesse William Preece .     British Army South Wales Borderers   from Abertillery, Wales

My Dad, Jes Preece, was a pow in Stalag 4b he was interned for 19 months, he was captured on the Greek isle of Leros, I would love to hear from any one who knew him, he was set free by the Russians near the end of the war. My father was a miner in the pits in the south Wales valley of Crumlin and later at Cwmtillery colliery in Monmouthshire, he used to be a very successful pigeon racer and he was well known throughout the valleys. He only ever talked about his internment twice or three times all his life, but he always said when feeding little birds such as sparrows, 'I know what its like to go hungry'.

Now that I have read a bit on the website about the camp I can understand what he went through, my heart goes out to all those soldiers who was taken from there families and for the tragic ones who never returned. I would like to thank you on behalf of my family for your hard work in making it possible for us to realize what our Dads went through for us to walk the streets as free men and women, its a pity our youth of today didn't have just a bit of their courage and pride.

Sgt. James Goldie Prentice .     British Army 9th Battalion Gordon Highlanders   from Coatbridge

James Goldie Prentice, in his own words: "On 16th of October 1939, we were at work on a scaffold at Rosyth Military Dockyard when we heard airplane engines above we looked up and spotted two bombers flying up river. They crossed the Forth Bridge, bombs were dropped, all missing the bridge. It now sunk in this was for real they were enemy planes. We were working next to two Cruisers the famous Repulse, a battle cruiser, and the Pelican, a pocket cruiser. We were almost deafened by the noise when they both engaged them. The sky was littered with white puffs in the vicinity of the planes. The ships guns ceased firing and we saw the reason spitfires from the 602 City of Glasgow Squadron took over and brought them down. This was the first air raid in Britain. The day following the air raid, I received a formal notice to report to Stirling Castle on 20th of October, where I enlisted with another 95 young men from Lanarkshire. We were posted to the 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, who, at that time, were stationed not far away in Alloa."

In 1991, James Goldie Prentice was invited with a small group of Burma veterans, to join in a good will trip to Japan. This trip was initiated by a Japanese veteran. During the visit, he toured Japan and met men he had fought against in various battles in Burma. The trip proved to be a time of great healing for the men who participated.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
