World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

James Harold Prichard .     Royal Navy HMS Royal Arthur   from Ilford

Class 288

I don't have many details on my grandfather, James Prichard other than a few pictures. One is of him in the Class 228 at HMS Royal Arthur.

John Stobo Prichard MC..     British Army 4th County of London Yeomanry   from Mathern Lodge , Penylan Cardiff

Copy of Airgraph Letter to Mrs J. Stobo Prichard, Mathern Lodge, Penylan, Cardiff. From Commanding Officer, 4th County of London Yeomanry, Major G.J. Kidston, M.C.

25th February, 1942

Dear Joan, Thank you so much for your kind letter of congratulations: mine was entirely undeserved, but Stobo’s was not. He is one of the very few doctors who has been decorated this war and no one deserves it more.

On December 28th he came up to me when we were being very heavily shelled, in a scout car, and asked for news of wounded which I gave him. The rest of the afternoon he spent tending wounded by jumping from tank to tank under fire. Next day without orders from me when he saw a tank catch fire and the crew bale out within 150 yards of 7 enemy tanks he went in with his little scout car under a barrage of fire and rescued them. I cannot tell you what a help he has been to me. I am only frightened that we shall lose him on a job soon, which will be one of the greatest losses the Regiment could have. My own pen is missing hence this ghastly scrawl.

Yours Sincerely

George Kidston

S/Sgt. Arthur R. Prickett .     US Army Infantry   from Russellville, Ohio

Arthur R Prickett was held as a prisoner of war. All my grandfather told us is that they were liberated by Russian women in tanks.

Pte. Kenneth Edward Prickett .     British Army 7th Btn. Cameronians   from Leicester

L/Cpl. Kenneth Edward Prickett .     British Army 7th Btn. Cameronians   from Leicester

Kenneth Prickett fought in the savage Battle of Walcheren Causeway where he was badly wounded. His CO, Major Vivian Gray, was killed by a sniper on 21st of January 1945. He is the one with the dog on the photo. My dad is 3rd row, 9th from the left. Taken at Comrie, Perthshire in October 1943. Only 25% survived the war.

Sgt. Peter Basil Priddey .     British Army Royal Army Ordnance Corps   from London

(d.17th June 1940)

My uncle, Sgt Peter Priddey of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps was on board in Lancastria at the time of the sinking. Unfortunately he did not survive. He is buried in a multiple grave at St Marie Sur Mer, along with a few others from this disaster. The grave has a military headstone.

Dvr Alfred Wordsworth Priest MiD..     New Zealand Army 5th Field Ambulance

Alfred Priest was Mentioned in Dispatches twice. He died in 1985.

Alice May Priest .     Land Army

I am writing in a bid to search for anyone who might remember serving in the Land Army with my Nanna, Alice May Priest in the Second World War. Sadly my Nana passed away recently but being part of the Land Army was something she was always intensely proud of.

Unfortunately, we have no details of where Nanna was based but she was living in Hull when the war began and would have been 20 years of age. I can remember as a child hearing her stories – many of which included stories of the American soldiers!!! If there is anyone who can remember anything it would be greatly appreciated if you could contact me. Thanks

Pilot Officer Cyril Priest .     RAF 10 Squadron (d.20th December 1943)

My husband's father, F/O Kenneth Seymour Lear, served in WW2 and flew in a Halifax bomber. We were told by my husband's mother, who is now deceased, that her husband was stationed at Marston Moor. I am trying to find out any history for him as he was reported missing in action and I think in the end declared dead on the 20th December 1943. My husband, like so many born during the war, never knew his father. We don't even have any photos of him. How can I find out if he was stationed at Marston Moor and if he was, if anyone has any pictures of him. He did also go to Canada for training. Can anyone help? We also don't have a date of birth for him but know he was 20 when he died.

Information from lostbombers.co.uk:

Halifax HX164, Operation Frankfurt, airborne 1637 20th December 1943 from RAF Melbourne. Cause of loss not established. Crashed near Dahlen, where those killed were buried. Their graves are now located in the Rheinberg War Cemetery.

F/L Whitmarsh gained an Immediate DFM, Gazetted 31Aug43 for his outstanding airmanship during a raid that same month to Mannheim.

  • Sgt. Michael Joseph Louis Priest .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 77 Squadron   from York

    (d.25th June 1944)

Sergeant Flight Engineer Lou Priest was my late husband's elder brother. He was 19 when he died. He is buried in the churchyard in Fontaine L'Etalon.

When my husband and I visited the churchyard in the 1990s, my husband noted that there were 14 CWGC headstones all bearing the same date of death. As a retired RAF officer himself, he thought this was rather curious. I think he then contacted the archivist at Elvington who did some research and informed him that two crews, one from 77 Squadron and one from 102 Squadron, had died as the result of a mid-air collision.

Geoffrey Fielden Priestley .     Royal Navy HMS Royal Arthur

Going through some of my father, Geoffrey Priestley's, old photos, I found this. He was a telegraphist air gunner and trained at HMS Royal Arthur.

Gunner George "Jammy" Priestley .     British Army Royal Artillery

My father told me the story when I was young. He said when they where hit he was 32yrs old and next to him was a young lad of about 18yrs and he said "We're going to go down Mr help me rip this door off and throw it in" He then took his boots off and jumped in so my father did the same and they paddled holding on the door till the bad swimmers came and tried to climb on it and it sank my father always said the young lad saved his life as they were on the outer of the swimmers and a small Dutch fishing vessels picked up the outer ones but couldn't take many as it wasn't large enough so he ended up in Holland and spent two weeks there before looking for troops to go back to and always had a photo of his Dutch girlfriend he met

Sgt. George Priestley .     British Army 1st Btn. Queens Own Cameron Highlanders   from Castleford

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
