Ivan Prytulak . Polish Army from Ukraine
My father Ivan Prytulak was Ukrainian, but served in the Polish Army, as Western Ukraine was under Polish rule. He was captured by the Germans, on his way to defend Warsaw, on the banks of the River Vistula, around October of 1939. After spending six weeks in a POW camp in Ostrowo, Poland, he was transported to Neubrandenburg Stalag No. 2A. His camp no was 19318. He must have been one of the first to arrive, as he wrote, they were building barracks, so he slept in tents. I am translating my father's autobiography from Ukrainian into English.

George Pugh . US Navy USS Boise
My grandfather, George Pugh, was on the USS Boise from I believe either 1939 or 1941 to 1946. I was wondering if anyone remembers him or had any information about him during that time?
F/O. Harold Kenneth Pugh . Royal Air Force 640 Squadron from Western Australia
(d.18th April 1945)
Flying Officer Harold Pugh was a farmer from Mt Barker in Western Australia. A talented academic and sportsman he was dux of the Muresk Agricultural College. Harold was a pilot in the 640 Squadron based at Leconfield. He lost his life when his plane crashed into the North Sea on 18th of April 1945.
His son, Neil Pugh, was only 2 years old when his father was killed and has never had any personal effects of his fathers. Two weeks ago a trunk was uncovered on the family farm in Mt Barker, Western Australia. It contained Harold's personal effects that were sent home from England after his death. The trunk was presented to Neil having laid unopened for 72 years. There was many special items in there that Neil will cherish. It also contained a letter Harold wrote on learning that Neil had been born.
We would very much like to reach out and make contact with other relatives of the 640 Squadron. In particular we want to know the names of the airmen who flew and died with Harold on 18th of April 1945. Harold also received a Caterpillar Club pin so we assume he bailed out of a disabled bomber at some stage and lived to tell the tale.
Harry Pugh . Royal Navy HMS Penelope
Harry survived the sinking of HMS Penelope, he served on her with my brother Elijah.
Sqd. Ldr. Rev. Herbert Cecil Pugh GC.. Royal Air Force (d.5th Jul 1941)
Sgt. Mervyn Robert Pugh . British Army from Birmingham
Gdsmn. Philip Charles Pugh . British Army 5th Btn. Coldstream Guards (d.11th Aug 1944)
Philip Pugh was born in Birmingham in 1921. When the Second World War broke out, he felt it was his duty to enlist, and so joined the Coldstream Guards. Philip had met a girl from South Shields who was called Louisa Cummins, and who had left her home town to help in the war effort and was working in a Birmingham munitions factory. After a short romance, they were married on the 26th of December 1941.
On the 11th of August 1944, five days after the Normandy landings by Allied forces, Philip was killed. He is buried at Calvados in France. A sad note to add is that Philip's wife was pregnant, so he never got to see his child, who was born shortly after he had been killed.
Pte. Robert Pugh .
Robert Pugh was held in the Stalag 8b Prisoner of War Camp near Lamsdorf, Germany.
Sgt. Ronald W. Pugh . Royal Air Force 514 Sqdn.

Sgt Pugh served with Jim Eley and Leslie E. Austin at RAF Waterbeach in 1944/45.

I have only been able to find details of my Uncle Tom on the CWGC website, I would love to learn more if anyone can help. He had only been married a short time and had no children, his wife Olive died 6 months after learning of his death.
Editor's Note: Tom was flying in Wellington Z1145 VR-A which took off from RAF Mildenhall at 18:10 on the 15th of Januray 1942. The Aircraft was severely battle damaged during the raid on Hamburg and was returning to base when both engines failed due to lack of fuel. The Wellington ditched at 02:10 on the 16th of Jan 1942 in the sea off Spurn Head. Two survivors, Sgt Cox and Sgt Lucas were picked up two hours later and taken to Grimsby Naval Hospital suffering from minor cuts and abrasions. Sgt Pugh was part of the crew of a 419 Sqdn Wellington which was damaged by enemy action whilst on operations to Hamburg on the night of 15/16th January 1942. While returning to base (Mildenhall) both engines failed and the aircraft crashed in the sea off Spurn Head. Of the six crew on board, only two were picked up uninjured, the other four were killed and two of these were not found. The crew were:

Rhoda Puig . Women's Timber Corps from Cricklewood
Our Nan, Rhoda Egan (nee Puig) was also at Culford (nr Bury St Edmunds) felling trees for use as pit props for the mines. Nan remembers having a toothache when she first arrived, and being sent to get the tooth pulled out that same week. She also remembers catching her foot with the axe during the summer and resting in the nurses station.
Nan often organised a coach back to London for other girls who wanted to go home for the weekend. She remembers Kay Beer (who married a Canadian), and being taken to visit a mine. She says she was given slips of paper in lieu of part of her wages, that could be cashed in after the war, but that she lost quite a few of the slips. Nan is now 88 and lives in Norfolk.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
