World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Cpl. Robert Ray .     South African Defense Force 2nd Transvaal Scottish   from Johannesburg

My Dad, Robert Ray, was captured at Tobuk on 21st of June 1942 by Rommel and was moved as a POW through Italy (Rome and Sardinia) to Stalag IVB (Muhlberg am Elbe) in 1943, nearby Stalag 304H (Zeithan) then later on to Torun in Poland which he said "hell it was cold there". Later with the Russians advancing he was moved to Fallingbostel, near Hannover and Bremen, from which he escaped and was picked up by British forces and repatriated. He lived till two weeks short of his 88th birthday. His son visited the sites Stalag IVB and 304H in 2000.

Sgt. Ronald Arthur Ray .     Royal Air Force 76 Squadron

I am just beginning to research my grandfather's story. He was on a bombing raid to Frankfurt on the night of the 18/19th March of 1944. His Halifax bomber was shot down over Frankfurt. He parachuted out and was subsequently captured and interrogated. He spent a week in solitary confinement at Dulag Luft, then was moved to a transit camp before being taken to Stalag Luft 6 in Lithuania.

His name was Ronald Ray. He was part of 76 Squadron and was a Flight Engineer on a Halifax bomber. His crew mates were, Les Basting (Mid Upper Gunner), Alex Buckle (Wireless Operator), Geoff Heaton (Navigator), Charles 'Chuck' Reed (Bomb Aimer) who didn't get out of plane hatch, Van Marle (Rear Gunner)he was a replacement just for that night and Peter Noyce (Pilot) who was killed and went down with plane.

Pte S. Ray .     Home Guard Signal Sect. Workington Btn.

CSM. Stanley Ray .     Royal Army Service Corps D Company 14th Coy.

I'm actually trying to find out about Stan Ray, he was my grand father who I know little about and would love to know stories about him. I know he served in Burma, he was called up on 15th October 1939 and was discharged on 8th March 1946.

Pte. Thomas Wilfred Ray .     British Army 1st Btn. Duke of Corwall's Light Infantry   from Birmingham

My father, Thomas Ray, joined the DCLI in 1935 and was stationed in India when the war broke out. He volunteered as a signaler for detached duty in Eritrea during 1940 and rejoined his unit in time to be stationed in Iraq. In 1942 the 1st Battalion joined with the forces defending Egypt and my father was captured in June 1942. As a POW he was sent t0 Italy where he escaped and was on the run for six months. By that time he spoke fluent Italian but was picked up by the Germans who thought he was an Italian deserter. He was sent to Germany where he was put into a straffe lager, or punishment camp. Eventually he was imprisoned in Stalag 11B and was liberated by American forces in April 1945.

VW Ray .     British Army

VW Ray served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Gdsm. Benjmin Raybould .     British Army 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards   from 58 Intended Street, Cradley, Worcestershire

(d.11th Dec 1940)

Benjamin Raybould was Guardsman 2656522, 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. He fought in the North African Desert War at the Battle of Sidi Barrani. He was my mother's first cousin and very well known to her. Ben's parents were at my grandparent's house when the telegram was delivered (the postman knew where they would be when he found them not at home a couple of streets away). Ben's death is recorded on the CWGC web site, also on a plaque at West Midlands Police HQ in Worcester and at his school in Colley Lane, Cradley, the same school that I attended later. As a child I was made to know all about cousin Ben.

Sgt. Harold Raybould .     British Army 2nd Btn. Border Regiment   from 108 Leven Road, Norton, Stockton on Tees

Pte. Frank Rayburn .     British Army Gordon Highlanders   from Edinburgh

Frank Rayburn, my stepfather, was taken prisoner as a result of the British Armies retreat at Dunkirk. As a Gordon Highlander he and many others were left fighting a rearguard action and was captured by the German Army.

The little I do know was that he was eventually transported to what is now Poland and worked on various farms. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war until his release in 1945. He rarely spoke of his time as a prisoner. He was very young when captured and stayed in 'The Gordons' serving in Germany and The Far East until his eventual release in the late 1950s. He met my mother in 1961 and they married in 1962.

He experienced some good times and bad times on the ship, and often spoke fondly of the family he stayed with in Charleston while the ship was being repaired. He kept in touch with them and visited them in the '80s and the local paper made a big thing of it. He also spoke of how some of the crew swapped their billeting arrangements to be with their mates, some were lucky and others were obviously very unlucky on the 12th August. Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
