Spr. John Statham .     British Army 505th Field Coy. Royal Engineers   from Newcastle upon Tyne

Jack Statham, my Grandfather, was in the Western Desert with 505th Field Company, Royal Engineers and was reported missing on 29th of June 1942. He was recorded as a Prisoner of War in Italy at PG70 Monturano (Parma). On 11th of January 1944 he was listed as in a Neutral County (which we know to be Switzerland as he escaped there, at great hardship) and was recorded as back in the UK on 23rd of October 1944.

In typical fashion for his generation of men, he never breathed a word about any of this. It came to light when a Swiss family who cared for him traced him through the Red Cross to ask after him, which came as a bit of a surprise to his family!

Mum, Irene Staunton joined up with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force at the start of the war, she became a cook, previously she was in service to a local Councillor who ran a paper shop. She always liked it when the papers were late and the paper boys had to go to school as she made an extra sixpence delivering the papers. Anyway, she always said the war was the best thing that happened to her as it got her out of Mevagissey. She also told me that during those war years she lived life to the full. She was based at St Eval at one point and then she found out she was being stationed in Scotland and a Scottish girl wanted her to swap so she would be nearer home, but mum didn't want to stay in Cornwall. On VE Day she met my Dad and they married 3 months later, he was sailor.

Gnr. Edward Stead .     British Army 39th Light Artillery Regiment Royal Artillery   from Pittington, Durham

My father, Ned Stead, served with the Royal Artillery as a gunner with the 39th Light Artillery throughout the North Africa campaign until 1943 when he was told he was being shipped out for the invasion of Italy.

The ship he boarded was the transport ship Fort Babine and on the 6th of February 1945 it was attacked by German torpedo bombers and hit. The ship listed over and the order was given to abandon ship but, my father and the rest of his gun crew, stayed onboard during the attack and decided to man the anti aircraft gun returning fire at the attacking planes until it was to dangerous. So he had to go over the side with his mates. They spent quite some time in the water before being picked up by a corvette escort. But, during the time he was in the water he ingested quite a lot of oil that had leaked from the ship consequently he was sent home to recover during which time the 39th Light Artillery was disbanded. So when he returned to active service he was transferred to the Royal Engineers and was in Northern Italy until the war ended.

Pte. Jonathan Charles Steadman .     British Army 1st Btn. King's Own Scottish Borderers   from Lewes, Sussex

Robert Ernest Steadman .     Royal Marines HMS Nigeria   from Birmingham

My father, Robert Ernest Steadman, who was a Royal Marine on HMS Nigeria, during the WW2. I am not sure how long he was on there. I do know that he was on there and after the war, as I have got pictures of him in Malta and South Africa. I have several pictures of him with other Marines and sailors. I have one large picture of the ship's crew. They seem to be in the Mediterranean, only because they are all in their whites.

It seems strange. I have gone through the crew list but there are no references to my father, or any other Royal Marines on board, but from the pictures I have he definitely was there and I remember him talking about the ship. But like most men during war, he did not talk much about it. He did talk about the other Marines because they were his friends. Unfortunately, I cannot remember much about it now, so if anybody out there remembers my father, please get in touch.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
