CSM. William Steward MID.. British Army Royal Engineers from Kidderminster
My Grandfather, William Steward was in the Royal Engineers. Before WWII he was in the reserves whilst working in the building trade as a ‘brickie’ in the Kidderminster area. He was called up to first be a basic trainer for the new recruits, as he told me training those called up to stay alive. He was sent to North Africa before moving on to Italy, fighting up to Monte Cassino. He said North Africa no picnic but nothing prepared you for the horrors and conditions experienced in Italy, cold mud, wet, shells and death. Newspaper was highly sought after so that you could put it inside your tunic and down your trouser legs as insulation.
The only detailed story he told, as he would not talk about the horrors and death, concerned an episode where he as a Colour Sergeant Major ‘borrowed’ a US army jeep that was not being used, and ‘found’ a good number of railway sleepers, transported them back to where he was stationed and excavated a bunker lined it with the railway sleepers then recovered it with several feet of soil. By all accounts it was a great, shell proof, relatively dry and warmer than being under canvas; the only problem some ‘officers’ noticed it and commandeered it for a communications post and he was back outside.
He was Mentioned in Dispatches, for what I don't know. What I do know is that he was strong, over 6 foot tall with a big chest 16 1/2 inch color and came with a hand shake that would break your hand if not ready for it. He was working class and took pride in rank of Colour Sergeant Major, refusing to be promoted to non commission officer ranks; to him it would have been a betrayal of his roots to become an officer.

Update
With a few friends/local historians I have been doing research for some years now on the heavy fighting in the area of the Antwerp-Turnhout Canal in Flanders in September/October 1944. One of the Canadian regiments involved in that region was your grandfather's SSR. They suffered a lot of casualties on the 24th of September 1944 during a failed attempt to establish a bridghead near Lochtenberg (a hamlet of the town of Brecht). Was your grandfather present with the regiment at that time? (Francis Hujbrechts)
Andrew Stewart . Bevin Boy from Forge Street, Glasgow
Our father Andrew Stewart was disappointed to be called a Bevin Boy, although born in 1925 I suspect he didn't think he would be called for WW2 but as a precaution trained in the Territorial Army. He did have fond memories of his time in Newcastle it was, however, tinged with regret over not going in to the main forces.

Dorothy Stewart . Land Army
My mother served with the Land Army. Unfortunately she has died and we are trying to trace anything about our family that we can. Her name was Dorothy Stewart and she lived on Hillgate {not sure of the exact address}. She was born on 10th March 1928. We are led to believe she actually said she was old enough to join, but was in fact too young. The address was in Stockport, Cheshire. I vaguely remember her saying she stayed somewhere near Crewe Wybumberry or something like that. Could you please tell me if there is any way that I can find details about her life in the land army? I would be grateful for any help you could give me.
Pte. Douglas Haig Stewart . British Army 6th Btn. Gordon Highlanders from Dufftown
Dad, Douglas Stewart served throughout the war. As a territorial he was already enlisted at the start of the war and saw service in the B.E.F. He saw action in Belgium and was evacuated from Dunkirk. From there he saw service in North Africa and then went on to serve in Italy. He was very proud of his connection with the Gordon Highlanders.

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
