James Stobie . Army The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
My father, now deceased, James Stobie, was a prisoner of war in Stalag XXB Camp 34. He was private No. 5783 in the Cameron Highlanders. I have several photos of him taken there in uniform, and in a band and a concert. If anyone knows of my Dad or could shed some light on his time there, could they let me know. I would be very interested.

(d.27th Aug 1944)
Walter Stockbridge was my beloved Mum's father, killed in action when she was just 4 years old. For Mum's 60th birthday, I found my grandfather's burial details and took Mum to the beautiful and tranquil Florence War Cemetery. Mum was overcome to be able to pay her respects to her dad.
Sgt. Victor Issac Stockel . British Army Durham Light Infantry from Woodford Green, Essex
My Father Vic Stockel was involved in some way in getting supplies to our troops across Neimagen Bridge whilst under sniper fire and was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster. I believe that, although the bridge was damaged, this might have been accomplished in a fleet of jeeps. Others who might have been involved in that event are believed to be Staff Sargeant Hockley and Sergeant Gold.
If anyone could throw any more light upon this event I would be most grateful to hear from you.

(d.1st August 1943)
Norman Stockley, was killed in action on the 1st of August 1943. He was 23 years old. Married to Claire. They had one son also named Norman who was born in the March of that year. Clare and the family, Walter and Rose received a letter of condolence from Norman's commanding officer before the official notice was received. Bruce, Norman's brother had been wounded at Dunkirk and taken prisoner. Just another of the tragic events of war.
Norman enlisted in 1939 before war broke out. Born in Essex but served with the Cameronian Scottish Rifles.
Sgt. Robert Stockley . British Army 2nd Battalion from Anfield, Liverpool
My great Grandfather Bob Stockley told tales of serving in North Africa, Italy and into Austria. He first served at North Africa and the times he had there, the battle of El-Alamein to him was brutal. He was positioned behind a Matilda Mk. II tank as he moved forward to a German position as bullets whizzed past him and seen several of his friend drop into the sand marks left behind by the tracks of the tank.
Another battle he was in was Monte Casino, he was told by some officers that he had to move three officers by a jeep within the cover of smoke, he took up to the task and then jumped on the jeep with the officers and drove them until the smoke changed direction with the wind, his Jeep was spoted an the steering was busted by a bullet an the majority of officers were killed by Italian and German snipers where then he had to hide in a foxhole.
He was also at the Anzio where he and a few American tanks spotted and presume killed a Tiger Mk. 1 tank. It was smoking before where I believe a Corporal or Private tapped him on the shoulder and said "Bob, I think it's turret is moving." He then ordered his squad to get down and out of the way where the Tiger opened fire with it's machine gun, killing a few men and a shell passing through the Sherman, killing it he luckily survived due to the entrenchment equipment deflecting a bullet from hitting his neck.

Frederick Henry "Blackie" Stockwell . Air Raid Protection Cx Postal 548-E from Isle of Dogs
Fred Stockwell was my granddad, my mother's father by adoption. However his brother John was my other granddad, my Dad's father. So my mother was adopted by my Dad's uncle. There is a photo of Fred in his air raid warden's uniform on the back of Island at War by Eve Hostettler. He was also a lighterman on the Thames. My mother always told a story about him disappearing for a week and nobody, including his wife knew where he had got to. He reappeared and went straight to bed and never said a word about where he had been to his wife. Weeks later his wife found out he had taken all his barges which I presume were towed back and forth over the channel to evacuate the soldiers stranded at Dunkirk. I hope you can use this little bit of my family history. As you can imagine I'm very proud of what Fred did.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
