World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

2nd Lt. John J. Scott .     Unites States Air Force 338th Bomb Sqdn.   from Johnstown, PA USA

My father never talked much about the war or his time as a POW, most men of that time didn't say much. It is only now after his passing, while completing the family tree, that the whole story is known. Jack Scott enlisted on 29th January 1942 at the age of 23. After flight training in the US, his group (96th BG, 338th BS) was based at Snetterton Heath, England on 4th July 1943. A little over three months later on 8th October 1943 at 15:10, flying at an altitude of 22,400 feet over Bremen, Germany, his plane went down. Those who could, bailed out. In his Missing Air Crew report he wrote: the plane crashed 15 KM SW of Weingbergen, Germany. He was the navigator, he had the maps, so he knew exactly where it went down. They flew B-17F - Serial Number 42-30373, Lucky Lady III. The POWs were taken to Stalag 7A, Moosburg, Bavaria 48-12 (Work Camps 3324-46 Krumbachstrasse 48011, Work Camp 3368 Munich 48-11) where they stayed until liberated by American Forces on 29th June 1945.

The Crew of the Lucky Lady III was- Pilot: Warren Jones; Co-pilot: Jim Fisher; Navigator: John Scott; Bombardier: Elmer Smith; Flight engineer/top turret gunner: John Sisul; Ball turret gunner: Frank LaPorta (6 Prisoner of War); Radio Operator: Leon Pensack; Waist gunner: Art Townley; Waist gunner: Bob Bassett; Tail gunner: Art Neilsen; foto-John Black[HQ Sqd 48th ASR] (5 Killed in Action); flak, crashed Weingbergen. God bless everyone of you Ggntlemen.

F/Lt. Reginald Scott .     Royal Air Force 76 Sqdn   from Newcastle-u-Lyme

No5. ITW, May 1940

Reg Scott was my dad, he trained with C Flight, No 1 Squadron, 5 I.T.W. and this photo was taken in May 1940, the reverse which has been signed by almost all of those in the photo (I assume). My dad is on the back row on the extreme right as you view the photo. He flew with the RAF as a Halifax Navigator and survived the war. The experience took its toll however and he took his own life in 1959.

I am interested in is finding anyone who knows or knew anyone in the photograph.

Pte. Reginald Scott .     British Army Parachute Regiment

I want to find out more about my father when he was in Stalag 11b. He dropped into Holland and was shot on the way down in the stomach. He was looked after by a Dutch couple in Westerboing in their hotel cellar until being taken to the POW camp. Any photos or information would be gladly accepted. My father was Private Reginald Scott, Parachute Regiment.

Tpr. Robert Fredrick "Scottie" Scott .     British Army 1st King Dragoon Guards   from Gateshead

My father, Trooper Robert Fredrick Scott, was a prisoner of war in Stalag XV111A. He was taken prisoner on 28th April 1941.He was captured in Greece.

I have his war diary, entered on the first page is the following info. Regiment 1st Dragoon Guards, Regiment # 7902063, also mentioned in his diary is the following, Royal Armoured Corps, P.O.W. # 4489, 2nd Armoured division, Stalag XV111A (68/6W/231/L/GW). He left England in November 1940 and arrived in Egypt via South Africa 31st December 1940. He left Egypt 8th March 1941 and arrived in Greece 11 March 1941. He was captured and taken prisoner on the 28th of April 1941 and I believe he was moved on to S.Greece, Salonika, Yuogo-slavia, Austria, then back to Yugo-slavia, then returned back to Austria 18 May 1941.

He left "Blighty" in Nov 1940 and returned to Blighty in May 1945. and a diary though out his time and in the diary are the names and addresses of many other soldiers he spent time with. Like many of his kind he did not talk about his war experiences with his children. Dad died 5 years ago, only now do we realise how much the war affected his health and his mind.

He did escape the camp the day before it was liberated. He also worked in the fields. Unfortunately, he developed skin cancer in later years as a result of this. I was named after the prisoner he escaped with.

Roderick Scott .     British Army 8th Btn. Argyll and Southern Highlanders   from Fife

(d.12th Jan 1943)

Roderick Scott died in Algiers.

Ronald Scott .

My uncle, Ronald Scott, was taken prisoner at Dunkirk and eventually ended up at Stalag XXB 127. He wouldn't talk about his experiences in the war. The only thing he would say about it was that he worked on a farm keeping the generators going. He had worked on the railway and so knew a bit about engines. Anyone with any knowledge of him or what he might have done I would welcome any news of his escapades.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
