My father, George Henry Sexton, was an ARP warden. He was aged 60 when he joined, and took a lot of pride in what he was doing. PO. Richard James Seymour .     Royal Navy HMS Nightjar

My father, Richard Seymour was marooned on Sable island with other sailors for several months after a German attack and I am researching his time on that island.

Tpr. Thomas James Seymour MM,MiD..     British Army 6th Btn. Royal Tank Regiment   from Newcastle upon Tyne

My father, Thomas James Seymour, was born in 1920 in Newcastle upon Tyne. He joined the Territorial Army in 1937 and in 1940 was sent to the Western Desert, (El Alamein). He was involved in the early part of the campaign when things were going badly. On 7th of July 1942 in the area of Ruweisat Ridge his lorry was shelled and badly damaged. Showing no regard for personal danger, he changed 2 damaged wheels under fire and refused to go back to the A1 Echalon, but went forward over a minefield to replenish the tanks which were heavily engaged in action. His lorry was again shelled, and he was ordered to off-load ammunition from the lorry and make a dump which he did single-handedly. His commander was Lieutenant Colonel Liardet. My father was awarded the Military Medal. The officer who was involved in this incident received the George medal. My father was also Mentioned in Dispatches and has an oak leaf and bar decoration.

I only know most of this because I got a copy of the original citation. My father did not talk about the awful things that happened until the 2 years before his death at the age of 97. Any mention of his time at El Alamein would make him very upset. I do remember my father telling me that he saw Auchinleck sitting up against a truck, I also remember him telling me that he thought Auchinleck had done a really good job, and was sorry when he was dismissed.

He was very friendly with another recruit from Newcastle. He showed my father a picture of his youngest sister. He started to write to her and on return to Tyneside they met and married! His friend Steve was now my uncle Steve and when they got together they would regale us with funny stories about their experiences. Neither of them told us how awful it was.

On a final note, he had been given an order to drive an armoured car over a bridge that was not safe. He told the officer that it wouldn't hold the lorry. On feeling the bridge give way he jumped out and the lorry was lost in a river. He was told he would be in great trouble for losing the lorry. A while later, on being summoned to the Colonel's tent, he was told before entering to salute and say 'Thank you'. Expecting to be told what would happen as a result of losing the truck, he was told instead that he had been recommended for the Military Medal. He heard no more about the lost lorry!

William Richard Dunham Seymour .     Royal Navy HMS Electra

My father was "the doc" on board The Electra when she sent down in The Battle of the Java Sea. His name is William (Bill) Richard Dunham Seymour. He is now 90 and was the ship's surgeon. He qualified in medicine at his home town of Belfast, N. Ireland, and volunteered (was known as "the wavey navy" as his strips were wavey to indicate he volunteered - no conscription in Ireland at that time - 1941). He joined up 4.4.1941 & went onto Electra, based at Scapa Flow and covering the N. Atlantic convoys before going out East. Luckily, was picked up after the Battle of the Java Sea by the Yanks and came home via Australia. Went to Haslar, then to King George V. and ended up being one the first specially chosen dozen to land in Japan after the two A bombs. We are still in touch with one or two survivors from the Electra.

Richard Coale was asking about people who may have known his grandfather who had been killed at the sinking of Electra in 1942. Could Richard please contact me?

AC1. William A Seymour .     Royal Air Force A Flight 37 Squadron   from Amber Hill, Lincolnshire

(d.30th Apr 1940)

My uncle AC/1 Bill Seymour an air gunner (front turret) was killed during a raid on Sola (Stavanger) airfield in Norway at approximately 20:50 hours on the evening of 30th of April 1940. The raid was carried out by four Wellington 1A aircraft of 37 Squadron based at RAF Feltwell, Norfolk. Two of the four Wellingtons P9213 and P9215, both from A flight were probably damaged by flak on their bombing run over the airfield and finally shot down by a mix of German fighters, Messerschmitt Bf109Es of II./JG77 and Messerschmitt Bf110Cs of I./ZG76. Both Wellingtons crashed in to the sea somewhere North of Rott Island about a mile South of Stavanger Peninsula.

P9215's Crew were: F/O G V Gordon, P/O T Kerr, Sgt W Eddlestone, LAC W E Brewster and AC/1 W A Seymour.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
