About
Sgt. John Shaw . Royal Air Force 49 Squadron
I came across these pictures in an album of my fathers and hope they might be of interest.
L/Cpl. John T. "Trevor" Shaw . British Army Durham Light Infantry
If anyone can put me in touch with anyone who may have been at Stalag 11A with my father, Lance Corporal John T Shaw, of the Durham Light Infantry, (known as 'Trevor') in the latter part of WWII I'd be very greatful to know more about life in the camp.
Sgt. John Cecil Shaw MID. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 49 Sqdn. from Hayes
(d.4th Jan 1942)
I have some photos of the military funeral Of Sgt J.C Shaw (in the POW camp Stalag Luft 1st January 1942.) They look to be giving him a funeral with full military honours, complete with a volley by the Germans. I have been told that he was shot trying to escape, but have no idea about the escape. Was he by himself? Were others shot? How did they try to escape? If anybody could answer these questions I would be very grateful.
Update: Sgt Shaw was shot attempting to escape. There were no others involved. During his escape attempt he had apparently been spotted by a guard and held his hands up, surrendering, but the guard shot him dead anyway. There was an inquiry by the Germans, but there doesn't seem to have been any action taken as a result of this. The Germans allowed a full military funeral.
Sgt Shaw's Hampden P4404 of 49 Squadron had been brought down about 50 miles south of Paris and all the crew became POWs. A subsequent shooting of another member of the crew occurred after the "Great Escape" from Stalag Luft 3. F/Lt Brian Herbert Evans was one of the many escapees, but was recaptured. The Gestapo executed him on 31st March 1944. He is buried in Poznam Old Garrison Cemetery.
The full crew were:
Sgt J.C. Shaw (pilot) F/Lt B.H. Evans (navigator) Sgt D. Young (wop/airgunner) W.K. O'Leary (wop/airgunner)

Mabel Shaw was called up in 1941. Her picture was put into the Dewsbury Reporter on March 14th 1942 with 5 other girls who had also joined up. She eventually was posted to Belvoir Castle where she met my father. My mother had a great singing voice and won a state Amateur singing contest in 1942, she also sang for the at several concerts including "The State Theatre" in Grantham where she was top of the Bill!

TAG Percival Clifford Shaw . Royal Navy HMS Kenya from Manchester
P/O. Peter M. Shaw . Royal Air Force 166 Squadron from Hipping Hall, Kirkby Lonsdale
(d.11th June 1944)
Peter Shaw flew a Lancaster bomber, taking off from Kirmington, Lincs on 10th of June 1944 at 22.31hrs. The mission was to bomb the railway at Acheres, north of Paris. The plane crashed at Mareil-le-Guyon and all seven members of the crew were lost. I recently received information from the village where the graves are well looked after..
Peter's father, my grandfather, served with the RFC during the First World War and finished as a squadron commander. I'm wondering if he was in the same squadron? He served as a colonel in the army during WW11. I'd be grateful for any information.
Pilot Officer R E Shaw . RAF 59 Squadron
Reginald Walter Shaw . British Army Eighth Army from Derby
I have Reginals Shaw's medals and know he was in the 8th Army (I believe he drove trucks), but he was very reluctant to speak about his experiences during the conflict, so my knowledge of his time is very, very basic indeed.

Flt.Sgt. Robert James Abadore Shaw . Royal Canadian Air Force No. 405 Squadron from Orillia, Ontario
(d.15th Dec 1942)
Robert Shaw was my first cousin, once removed. According to RCAF records, Robert was not too bright but was very willing and, although he would never be a pilot, he aspired to join the Air Force. He joined the Special Reserve in November 1940 and then took the oath on 16th July 1941.
After training in various places, he was given 17 days’ embarkation leave and then disembarked in the UK on 9th March 1942. He was posted to No. 405 Squadron on 23rd November 1942 and re-mustered on 5th December 1942 as an Air Gunner. Unfortunately, he was killed in action just 10 days later, on 15th December. He had a fiancee at home in Canada, Nina Morley, and a father and large family of siblings waiting on his return. His mum, my great-aunt, had died in 1939. He was posthumously awarded the following medals: 39-45 Star; European Star; Defence Medal; War Medal; CVSM, award & clasp; Memorial Bar. I cannot find any record of a burial site so I am assuming that he died over water or in enemy territory where no memorial is possible.
Ronald James Shaw . New Zealand Army 21st Battalion from Auckland, New Zealand
My father, Ronald Shaw was captured at the battle of Maleme on Crete. He told me a mortar shell exploded near him and he was knocked unconscious. When he came to, the Germans had overrun the position and he was captured.
F/O Ronald John Shaw . Royal Air Force 104 Squadron (d.5th May 1944)
I do not much about my Uncle Ronald Shaw. I do know his Wellington was shot down by Night Fighter, whilst mine laying in the River Danube. He is buried near Budapest.

Lt. Teddy G. Shaw . US Army Air Force 748 Squadron (d.24th Aug 1944)
My uncle, Lt. Teddy G. Shaw was a B-17 pilot with the 748th sqdrn. He and his crew were lost on 24 August 1944. His mission summary is below along with the names of his crew. I would like to one day visit England to see where he was stationed. Unfortunately I never knew him, but recently discover his voice via a recording he sent my grandmother just before departing for England.
Mission No. 112, August 24, 1944, Target - Weimar
The target for the 457th on this date was manufacturing facilities about five miles west of Weimar, Germany which was believed to be making V-2 rocket bombs. A nearby barracks of the Geatapo was also a target. The group put up 36 planes. One plane, s/n 42-09755, left the formation and was not seen again. Over the target another plane, s/n 42-97571, was hit by flak and lost and four others were badly damaged. The target was clearly visible as the squadrons bombed in trail. The target was left a smoking, burning ruin. No fighers nor flak were encountered on the way home.
This plane s/n 42-97558, named "Tis Me Sugar," and piloted by Lt Teddy G Shaw, left the formation with no apparent problem. One report says that there were no fighters or flak and the plane simply left the formation and was not seen again. Another reports that he was hit by a lone jet fighter plane, lost two engines, went into a spin and later exploded at a lower altitude.
Thomas Sutcliffe "Tommy" Shaw . British Army from Todmorden, Yorkshire
My grandfather used to tell me stories of his time in the second world war when I was a small child. I know nothing except that he was in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and he mentioned being in India, Italy, and Africa. Based on my research, this may have meant he was in the 2/4th battalion, but that is just speculation. My name is Michael Yaneff, and I live in Toronto, Canada, which is where he emigrated to after the war with his wife, Sarah Cameron and their young daughter Valerie Shaw (my late mother). My e-mail is myaneff@hotmail.com Thanks! Michael

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
