Dvr. Walter James "Tangi" Siely DCM.. NZ Army Petrol Company Army Service Corps from Wellington, NZ. On his 8th attempt James Siely escaped from an Arbietskommando at the cement factory to Stettin, travelling by ship to Sweden. This happened in August 1944 He was awarded the DCM but never spoke of it. Does anyone know any details?

Bertie Charles Silver . British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps from Portsmouth My father, Bertie Silver, was a POW in Poland. He came home and married my mum Gwen. He never talked about him time in the camp. I always remember him saying that it was in the past. He was so proud and always followed the regiment where ever they were.

Reub Silver . British Army King's Royal Rifle Corps My father was Reub Silver, of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, he was a POW in Stalag XXB five years.
So interesting reading all the stories which are so similar to the stories he used to relate to me when he came home. How lucky I was to have him come home, even though he eventually passed away at age 45 from a heart attack, which I think was caused by being a POW.

Signalman. Walter Silver . British Army 19th Air Formation Signals Royal Corps of Signals from 10 Eedwood Ave, East Ardsley, W. Yorks My father, Walter Silver, served in Burma during WW2 as a despatch rider in the Signals. He's still alive at the time of writing, but is living in a nursing home in Leeds. His memory is not so good these days, but I do know that his Unit at the end of the war was 19th Air Formation Signals, and I have photos of him with a group of comrades, including his younger brother, Ernest, in Comilla, Bangladesh.
Dad has said very little over the years about his experiences - except some light-hearted quips about his motor bike, mates etc. He's mentioned being in Rangoon, Chittagong and Kohima.

P/O. Henry Silverwood DFM.. Royal Air Force 582 Squadron from Shipley, Yorkshire (d.29th Aug 1944) Pilot Officer (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Henry Silverwood was the son of Arthur and Mary Jerome Silverwood of Shipley, Yorkshire.
He was 24 when he died and is buried in a collective grave in the Norre Vorupor Cemetery in Denmark.

Sqd Ldr. George Silvester . Royal Air Force 32 Squadron On October 9, 1944, MJ730 was transferred again to 32 Sqn., RAF at Kalamaki, Greece The aircraft was chosen by Sqn. Ldr. George Silvester, DFC, as his personal plane. Before its individual code had been assigned, he jokingly said to some of his ground crew that there was "a bit of a question mark" over which identity letter to give his personal Spitfire, because as Squadron Leader, he belonged to neither A Flight or B Flight. The ground crew as a lark placed a large "question mark" where the individual code letter would have normally appeared. Sqn. Ldr. Silvester was amused by the gesture and MJ730 was referred to as "The COs Query". "I would find out from the engineering officer what letter was allocated to the aircraft. I liked to paint (I had a steadier hand in those days) and normally did this myself. I remember having a template made with small holes in suitable places." When the CO came back from satisfactorily test flying this aircraft, Cpl Tylee asked what code letter should put be put on the Spitfire? "... he jokingly said that there was a bit of a question mark over which identity letter to giver his Spitfire.... because he was neither A Flight nor B Flight". According to the former airframe fitter, the groundcrew took the initiative and Cpl Tyler painted a large question mark (temporarily, using whitewash, he later told me) where a code letter would normally be positioned. The CO (Sqn Ldr G. Silvester DFC) was amused by this and said it could stay. Cpl Tylee therefore painted a permanent mark on the aircraft and it was thenceforth known by squadron personnel as The COs Query. [NOTE I used this as the title of my book on the aircrafts history.] Furthermore, Betty Silvester, Sqn Ldr Silvesters widow, sent me documents and photographs in which her husband referred to MJ730, in its GZ-? coding, as His kite. Although I am aware of at least one other WW2 squadron using a ? coding on a Spitfire.

Pte. Alexander Scott Killoch Sime . British Army 6th Btn. Seaforth Highlanders from Bogton Llanbryde, Morayshire Dad, Alexander Sime was a POW held in the hospital block. He had a shrapnel wound on his thigh and could not walk properly. He remembers that the guards were not very vigilant and that the POWs had managed to detach a gas pipe and they had lit it. It had a huge long flame but they were able to make tea dangling their cups or billies over the end of the flame. He was returned home on a boat in 1942. He weighed six and a half stone and was over 6 foot. It was turned into the Norwegian POW camp after they were all sent home.
