Capt Jakob Olai Skarstein .     Norwegian Army

Wg Cdr Stanislaw Jakub Skarzynski VM CI 3KW.     Polish Air Force (d.26th June 1942)

When RAF Newton became a Training Station for Polish Airmen, my father, later Group Captain Stanislaw Skarzynski, became Commanding Officer to train on Harvards, Ansons and Oxfords. A Linklater was also put in place.

RG Skea .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

RG Skea served with the Royal Armoured Corps British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Ben Skeates .     Royal Navy HMS Enterprise

I volunteered to join the Royal Navy as a boy tel in 1935. I did my training at HMS St Vincent, Gosport. I served on HMS Enterprise on Atlantic Patrol and at Narvik. I was accepted as a volunteer for submarine service in May 1940 and was invalided late 1949. I served on HMS Upright and HMS Utmost (Malta 41-43) and joined P311 and Cdr Cayley, but was hospitalised with post concussion and missed her sailing on her fatal patrol. I served on HMS Strategem but was taken ill with bilateral pleurisy in Trincomalee whilst alongside HMS Maidstone. Missed HMS Strategem on her fatal patrol. I was transferred to HMS Stygian at Perth and served on her for eight patrols and also when she towed Lt Fraser VC's XE3 into Singapore Roads and recovered her the following night. I transferred to HMS Maidstone and Hong Kong.

Pte. Joseph Charles Skeats .     British Army 2nd Btn, D Coy Royal Northumberland Fusiliers   from West Ham, London

My dad, Joseph Skeats, enlisted for WW2 on 16th of May 1940 at East Ham Town Hall at the age of 25. He was allocated to the Essex Regiment and trained at Colchester and then posted to the 10th Middlesex in 1941 and the to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers on 7th of June 1943. On 27th of June 1943 he embarked for North Africa and was there from June 1943 until September 1943, then in Italy from September 1943 to December 1944, then in Greece from December 1944 until December 1945. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 12th of May 1946.

I wasn't born until 1953, but I have just recently learnt that he suffered with what is now called PTSD. I don't ever remember my dad talking of the war, he just mentioned the countries that he had been in and how hot it was! But never, ever talked of any battles or fighting. He sadly died in 1971.

SPO. Leslie James Davidson Skedd .     Royal Navy HMS Quebec   from Lonmat

Jim Skedd served in HMS Quebec.

WO John Skeel .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 166 Sqdn. (d.25th March 1944)

Cfn. Ronald D. Skegg .     British Army Royal Army Ordance Corps   from Battersea

Pte. Walter Thomas George Skeggs .     British Army 2nd Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment   from Rotherhithe

I have found two records showing my father, Walter Skeggs, as missing in action and then as a casualty in June 1940, so possibly from the evacuation at Dunkirk. I have also found notes saying that he was a commando and, I believe that this may have been 5 Commando as 5 Commando were formed in Bridlington, East Yorkshire around the time that the Dorsetshires were guarding the East Yorkshire coast prior to their deployment to India.

Joseph Skellett .     Royal Air Force

Joseph Skellett served with the Royal Air Force. I don't have any information about Joseph during the war, other than he was stationed at Pershore, then went in to the army after that.

S/Sgt. William Noel Skellett .     British Army Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers   from Collyweston, Northamptonshire

My grand-uncle Staff Sergeant William Skellett of the REME died in Hamburg on 19th March 1947 apparently after contracting a disease during the reconstruction of the city. He is buried in the British Army Cemetery there. I know his service number, rank, service arm and have a few photos but that is all of the information I have. I would love to know Bill's story - the units he served with and where. I imagine that he would have been in the army for some years in order to achieve the rank of Staff Sergeant and there must be so much that I don't know.

If anyone remembers Bill or is able to suggest any sources for research into the REME during WW2 I would love to hear from you.

(d.18th Nov 1944)

Gnr. John Skelton .     British Army 22nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery   from Halifax, Yorkshire

My father, John Skelton, served with the 22nd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery in WW2. I understand he was badly injured in Greece and evacuated via Pireus then Barry and Milan in Italy and then on to the UK where he was admitted to a hospital in Cardiff. That's all I know. It may be a long shot I know, but I think he was acting as Infantry with 4th Division possibly in Northern Greece, Salonika? Any information most gratefully received, I am trying to find out what happened.

Gnr. Robert Barker Skelton .     Royal Artillery 5th RHA Regiment

Robert Skelton, Royal Artillery - peace and war as far as Dunkirk. Enlisted at 18 years of age. On my own initiative I took a vehicle and brought back 35-50 men to the final defence perimeter, which was ready for firing. No record entered for despatches. Then went in search of food. Entered small room about 7 by 7 feet and heard, before I about turned to leave, the immortal order of General Alexander to a tall robust Guards officer "Take 200 riflemen to the rooftops and defend against the enemy." That officer went out and did his duty, personally slaying 39 Germans and, in the process, won the most coveted medal that can be bestowed, the Victoria Cross. His name was Captain Erskine. Upon my embarkation and landing at Dover I subsequently finished up in Bulford Hospital, then Tidworth Hospital, then convalescent at Romsey Hospital. I finished with a trade release.

Bmbr. Sydney Skelton .     British Army 4 Survey Regiment Royal Artillery (d.14th Nov 1942)

Sydney Skelton was born in Willington Quay about 1916. He was the son of Ernest W and Mary A Skelton (nee Henderson) of Jarrow. He died aged 26 and is remembered on the Alamein Memorial. He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Victor Skelton .     British Army Royal Engineers

Sgt. William Skelton .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 138 Sqdn. (d.14th April 1943)

WO. Reginald Skepper .     Royal Air Force 99 Squadron   from Lincoln

Reg Skepper was born in Fiskerton, Lincoln 1921. He worked as an Apprentice at Rustons Bucyrus in Lincoln until joined RAF in 1942. The house he lived in at the time, with his half sister Mary, suffered a direct hit from a 200lb bomb days after they both moved out as Mary was joining the WRAAF. Reg was sent to Moreton on Marsh OTU in April 1943, and then to Burma, Reg flew sorties over the Japanese in the ultimate Wellington, the Mk X. The crew he was with more or less stayed together throughout the war, being Tony May (Bomb Aimer), Jimmy Hatfield (Pilot) and Bill Gunn (Wireless op). They flew to Burma to begin operations on 5th of April 1943, taking an epic route from Moreton in Marsh, via Portreath, Tripoli, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Karachi, Jhodpur, Allahbad, and finally Jessore, arriving 8th June, the entire flight taking 48 hours over a month. They flew Costal patrol, leaflet dropping and Intruder raids, the first real War Op being the raid on Tuang Akyab, In Wellington Mk X HE 714. They were ditched once on 10th November 1943, at position 20 ° 45' N 92 ° 12' E, about 5 miles off the coast near Cox's Bazaar, in the Bay of Bengal and crew had to use dingies to escape, but luckily they were picked up next day by an American patrol. For having to use a dingy, the whole crew became members of the Goldfish Club. Jimmy Hatfield. the Pilot stopped flying with them on 10th of June 1944, and was replaced with a pilot called Sankey, and sometimes another called Sullivan, and the crew switched to flying a Dakota C47 FL611 or FZ604, ferrying freight, dropping supplies, and moving stretcher cases. He then was sent to El Shemer Staff Navigation School for 6 months, mainly flying Wellington XIV's and then was demobbed.

Reg went back home to Lincoln, resumed his job At Rustons, married, and bought a house at North Hykeham rising to the position of Chief Development Engineer, working at first on Diesel engines and large Megawatt Diesel Generator Sets, and then developing and building protoype Gas Turbines. He left Rustons when the entire Small Engines Division was taken over and moved to Cannock, and worked for Mirrlees Blackstone at Stamford, until he retired in 1981. Reg's lifelong passion was photography, and he was a leading member of Lincoln Photographic Club. His garage at North Hykeham never held a car, as it was converted into a darkroom very early on. Reg was one of the first amateurs to print colour photographs at home, and would also photograph weddings as a side business. Reg died aged 74 at St Barnabas Hospice in 1994 having been cared for at home. His wife Gladys, who also spent the war in the WRAAF, at died in 2017, aged 93. Reg and Gladys had two children Patricia, and Stephen.

Dvr. Edgar Maitland Skerritt .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps   from Carlton Rd., Gidea Park

My step father, Maitland Skerritt, was a POW in Stalag 21A near Schildberg. He would never talk about his experiences as I think they were pretty terrible. All I know about his experinces is a newspaper cutting from The Recorder on the 27th of April 1945 reporting his escape from a column of POW's who were being marched from a working camp as the Americans advanced. He and 2 others rolled down a slope & escaped into woods. After a 10 day trek they found the American lines.

He has been captured at St Valery in 1940 and marched 350 miles through France, Belgium and Holland evetually arriving in the camp in Poland. He spend 5 years in the POW camp & sadly the privations led to his early death aged 51. I do have a small address book of his which I think has names & addreses of some of his army mates.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
