Jozef Snijders .     Royal Air Force 320 Sqdn.

My dad was in 320 (Dutch) Sqadron RAF in 1942, he later joined the British Army, I have no information on that, but he later was a crew member on HRMS Karel Doorman, he was an engineer. His name was Jozef Snijders, he had one or two nicknames one was Joop. The Karel Doorman was sold to Argentina in 1968. Dad spent a lot of years as a chief engineer in the merchant navy. He is now deceased. Anyone remember him?

Pvt. Boyd Eugine "Smokey" Snodgrass .     United States Army   from Grand Island, NE

My father, Private First Class, Boyd Snodgrass, was captured in France. Unfortunately, a building in Dallas, Texas burned down a few decades ago and most of the information about my father's capture and de-briefing were destroyed when the building burned to the ground. I know that he was shot and captured. Do not know for exactly how long he was a POW, but it was for more than a year.

My Father would never talk about his experience. Never. He met with other soldiers every few years in alternate cities and always travelled by himself. I assumed these other men were in the same camp with my father. His silence, which I completely understand, led me to do an American History minor in college, with a close and passionate focus on WWII. I was told by the Veterans of Foreign Wars office that the camp my Father was in was liberated by the Russians.

Ellis A. "Buddy" Snow .     United States Army C Coy. 16th Infantry Regiment   from Arkansas

The following are details of my uncle's history as related to me by his daughter, my cousin. At the age of 90, he still has an amazing memory. Maybe these details will help others who are trying to trace their relative's history during WWII.

Ellis "Buddy" Snow, served as a Browning Automatic Rifleman with the 1st Division (Big Red One), 16th Regiment, Company C (Charlie). He was drafted on the 15th of Novemeber 1943 and shipped out in September 1944 on the Queen Mary out of Camp Shank, New York. The ship reached Glasgow, Scotland, after six days at sea. They travelled in a boxcar to Southampton, England, then by boat across the English Channel to Le Havre, France. When the boat landed, they let down the ramp and the men had to get across the beach. I think it was Omaha Beach. The Germans were in the hills firing on them as they unloaded. He said there were bodies and blood everywhere.

He was in the battle of Huertgen Forest, France, and continued battles across to Germany. He has medals for each major battle.

He was captured on January 5th, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge, when his troop ran out of ammunition and was surrounded by Germans.

He was imprisoned at Stalag 6G, a prisoner of war camp near Kirchheim and Flamersheim, near Bonn, Germany. He was a prisoner for 97 days. On April 12th, 1945, Stalag 6G was liberated by units of the US 13th Armored Division. He came home on the George Washington. The sea crossing took 15 days.

The letter says that the last she heard from her son was a postcard dated 29th of January 1945 and prior to that a letter dated 1st of January 1945. The letter is stamped: This letter has been returned by the Swiss Post Office who were unable to reforward it to Germany because of interruptions in communications.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
