Lt.Cmdr. Somerville . Royal Navy HMS Kingston
HMS Kingston was commissioned at Cowes Isle of White. Initially it was resplendent all white and we were ready for a trip with the fleet visiting the cities and towns the ships were named after. Due to the imminent outbreak of war the vessels were painted battleship grey and we were transferred to Portland for working up. With 5 DF- The Home Fleet was sent to Scapa Flow on blockage duty between Shetlands and Iceland and together with sister ships Kashmir and Icarus we sank the submarine U35 east of the Shetlands. Lieutenant Commander Somerville received the DSO for this action. The Kashmir and Kingston rescued the submarine crew and the Kingston had part of the crew on board for several weeks until we reached Gourock where the POWs where handed over. We went to Falmouth for a boiler clean and small refit, which lasted about 6 weeks. From Falmouth we were sent to Harwich where it was thought we were getting ready for the evacuation from France, we were only there for a few days, then sent to Plymouth. We were issued with white uniforms and knew that we were going foreign.

Roy Harry Watson Sopp . Canadian Army 7th Medium Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada
My mother, Rose Alice Marston, was a war bride. She was from Great Bookham and married on 24th of December1944 to my father Roy Harry Watson Sopp who returned to Canada in January, 1945. She was born on in 1923 and was 22 when she came to Canada. She would have boarded the train in Halifax around May 9-12 1945 and taken it to either Brandon or Winnipeg Manitoba. My father returned home to Brandon Manitoba, after receiving shrapnel injuries near Caen in France in August 1944. He was a member of the Canadian II Corps, 7th Medium Regiment RCA, Gnr. Sopp, R.H.W.
From September 1939 until November 1943 when the 7th Army Field Regiment became the 7th Medium Regiment, many left the unit for a variety of reasons, but probably 800-900 of those listed were actually with the 7th Medium between November 1943 and the end of the war. I do know he was injured in France in mid August 1944. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I have the privilege of being able to visit Pier 21 and continue research of my mother's trip here in late April 1945. I have been searching for the name of the ship she travelled on and would love to hear from anyone who made the same voyage. At present I have learned she arrived in Halifax around May 5-8th 1945. Apparently, Pier 21 may have been in a state of repair following a fire there a few weeks prior. If anyone reads this and can provide any details, I would love to hear from you!

(d.22nd May 1941)
Charles Henry "Harry" Sore . Royal Navy
Pte. William Henry Sore . Britsh Army 4th Btn. Green Howards from Newcastle
(d.25th December 1943)
It is believed that when William Sore's battalion was overrun he was taken prisoner and was moved to Italy: Prison Camp PG 53 Sforza Costa. When the Italians changed sides he took the opportunity to escape. He was reported missing, then the family were informed he had died before or after the 25th December 1943. He has no named grave.
I am trying to trace anyone who knew or served with William Henry Sore on behalf of his family. Any information that can be given will be gratefully received.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
