F/Sgt. C. Stanley DFM.. 97 Squadron
Charles Stanley . RCAF
My father George Gardner passed away in February of this year aged 80 years. For as long as I can remember he has talked about a Canadian airman who he became very good friends with during the second world war, namely Charles "Chuck" Stanley. During the war years my father was a coal miner and lived in Hetton le Hole in the heart of what then was the Durham coalfield, he had met Charles Stanley through a mutual aquaintance and they very quickly became good friends, Charles visited Hetton le Hole as often as he could and he was stationed at RAF Middleton St George. I understand that they lost contact with each other when Charles was posted elsewhere and it being war time there was not the modern resources available to keep the contact going.
My father would talk quite regularly in the intervening years about their friendship and he often wondered if he had survived the war and what became of him. I did on many occasions offer to try and trace Mr Stanley but my father always declined the offer......I think in reality he did not want to face up to the fact that perhaps he had been killed in action, and he wanted to preserve his good memories of him.
In January of this year I made a decision to try and find out what had become of Mr Stanley, if he had survived the war and if he was still going strong, however my father died in early February which effectively put a stop to it, I have however decided in memory of my late father to try and find Chuck Stanley or his relatives, my problem however is that I have very little to go on and really don't know where to start.
All I know is that "Chuck" was stationed at Middleton St George during the war years and hailed from Quebec ( I again sadly don't know if that is Quebec City or some other town within the province of Quebec ), I am therefore hoping that you can point me in the direction of somewhere where I can actually start making progress.
Hoping you can help.

Sergeant Everett Wayne Stanley . USAAF 613th Bomb Squadron 401st Bomb Group from West Virginia
My grandfather was the ball turret gunner on a B-17G. On April 29, 1944, his aircraft was shot down over Holland after bombing the railway yards in Berlin. All of the crew made it safely out of the aircraft. All of the crew were captured by German forces with the exception of one man. This man, Sgt. Watkins, was able to evade capture with the help of members of the Dutch Resistance and made it back to England. The rest of the crew were taken to Dulag Luft for interrogation. All of the enlisted crew members were sent to Stalag Luft 4. My grandfather however was sent to Stalag Luft 3 with all of the officers. They arrived a little more than a month after "The Great Escape". All of the crew members survived thier ordeal in the german prison camps and were later reunited after they were liberated by Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army. Sadly, my grandfather passed away from cancer. He never spoke of his experiences during the war. After much research, I now understand why. God bless all that served and let us never forget thier sacrifice.

He was part of the 141st Inf. US Army. Unlike many of the others he told me many stories of his days as a prisoner of war. They were not too pretty. It would be nice if I could find someone else who knew him.

Private Horace Stanley . Army 21st Battalion (Islington) Middlesex Regiment from Northwood, Middlesex, Enaglnd
(d.19th Oct 1918)
I have been tracing the details of the above WW1 soldier who wou;ld have been my uncle. From CWGC website I have found his final resting place in Berlin South-Western Cemetery and have details of the plot and site which I will visit in due course. From my father's information I believed that Horace was wounded and captured at Passchendaele but have now found records at the National Archives confirming capture date as 09/04/1918. It would appear that this was at Armentiers. Those records also confirm date of death as 19/10/1918, in hospital at Stallupen? Cause of death is stated as pneumonia.(The writing is not clear on microfiche.) I would like to find out in which PoW camp he was internedbefore his death and if possible his original burial site before being re-buried in the CWGC. I do have a photograph of the soldier, in uniform, taken with his sister and mother early in 1918 whilst on leave before returning to France from whence the story unfolded. I also have a photo of his brothers. The quality is not good enough to scan which I have tried before but a photocpy can be sent to you if you wish.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
