My father, Dale Thatcher, was a POW in Stalag 3C until liberated by the Russians on 31st January. I would welcome information about the camp.

Lawrence Albion Thatcher .     British Army Parachute Regiment   from Dover,Kent

(d. )

Lawrie Thatcher was my uncle, he has now sadly passed away. He was a very proud man, especially concerning his time in the parachute regiment. He was captured at Arnhem and sent to Stalag ivb, until liberated by the red army.He would never have too much to say about the bad times as a pow, but would often talk about his regiment with pride.

He gave me a handmade box many years ago, inside is the inscription "captured at Kos, 04/10/43, O.G.Huntley, Stalag ivb Muhlberg", obviously some sort of trade or friendship was involved here. Does anyone else have a similar box or items?

Pte, Leonard Walter Thatcher .     British Army Royal East Kent Regiment   from Bexhill

My grandfather, Leonard Thatcher served in the Buffs and was Territorial Army before the war. I know he was in the Expeditionary Force and was captured at St Valery. He then was marched to Poland and was kept a prisoner at Stalag viiib. From what I remember my dad telling me, he worked in coal mines during his time in the camp. At the end of the war he was returned home by the Americans but reading online I have noticed that if that was the case he would have been involved in the Long March the Germans forced POWs to do at the end of the war? Like many he didn't talk much about the war to my father and never fully recovered health wise. Any info would be great.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
