Capt. David Glynn Thomas .     Royal Navy 602 LCM Flotilla Royal Marines (d.25th June 1944)

My cousin-in-law's dad served in HMS Copra. He was killed in Normandy on 25th June 1944 and is buried at Hermanville War Cemetery.

The CWG site states that he was serving in the Royal Marines, 602 LCM Flotilla.

My father, David Thomas, from St Ives, Cornwall, enlisted in the Royal Navy. H trained at HMS Royal Arthur from 5th of June 1941 to 29th of October 1941.




Sgt. Desmond Thomas .     Britsh Army 1st Batallion South Lancashire Regiment   from Liverpool

My Grandad, Des Thomas, joined at the age of 15 having lied about his age. He served with the 1st Battalion South Lancashire Regiment and before he died at age 92 he spoke about losing his best friend in a battle - possibly Arnhem? He also described the D Day landings.

Edmund Thomas MM..     Home Guard   from Cardiff

In Home Guard uniform

Edmund Thomas was decorated with the MM, and was subsequently taken prisoner of war in April 1918 whilst serving with the 18th Battalion. A Canton boy from Cardiff, he later served in the Home Guard during the Second World War.




Sgt. Edward Leonard Lalouel Martin Thomas .     Royal Air Force RAF Morpeth

I am looking for Edward (Teddy) Leonard Lalouel Martin Thomas who was a Sgt. Pilot, RAF, based at Morpeth in 1945. He married a girl called Margaret (Peggy) Evelyn Chant in 1945 and he would now be about 98. Any information would be appreciated.

Cpl. Ernest Arthur Thomas .     British Army 2nd Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers   from Birkenhead

Arth Thomas served with the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers




Pte. Frederick John Thomas .     British Army Welch Regiment   from Llanelli

Frederick Thomas was captured in Crete and was held as a POW. He was registered as missing on the 9th of September 1941 and returned home in 1945.

S/Sgt. Gareth "Taffy" Thomas .     British Army Royal Army Ordnance Corps   from Aberthaw, Barry, S Wales

Gareth Thomas served from 9th of September 1939 to release on 28th of January 1946. Following initial training, he served with 2BOD of the BEF in France before being evacuated via St Nazaire. He witnessed the sinking of the Lancastria from shore losing close friends about the fated troopship.

In August 1942, Gareth was to be found at Dados Moascar in Egypt. Then from September 1942 to March 1945 was chief clerk with the Ordnance Depot on the docks at Alexandria. From here, he became A/O i.c Traffic with 4BOD, MEF before returning to the UK to become a member of staff at RAOC School, Hillsea Barracks until his release.

Joining up as a private, Gareth left the army with the commissioned rank of second lieutenant, one of the very few to go through the ranks.




S George Herbert Alfred Thomas .     Royal Navy HMS Gossamer   from Birkenhead, Cheshire

(d.24th June 1942)

George Thomas was killed in action on the 24th of June 1942, aged 23. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial in Portsmouth, he was the son of Harold Victor and Eliza Thomas, of Birkenhead, Cheshire. His body was never recovered.

HMS Gossamer was a member of the Halcyon Class and she was a minesweeper assigned to Russian Convoy duties. Whilst at anchor on the 24 June 1942 at Kola Inlet near Murmansk, North Russia, she was bombed and sunk with the loss of 24 crew, including George H. A. Thomas. His name is recorded on the "World War 2 Birkenhead Roll Of Honour 1939 - 1945" in Birkenhead Town Hall, Hamilton Square, Birkenhead and on the H.M.S. Gossamer memorial at St Bartholomew's Church, Penn, Wolverhampton.

George was taken prisoner at Dunkirk, and was one of the last to be released.

The only story my grandfather, George Thomas told anybody (as he never liked to talk about his time as a POW) was, that he always looked at the German Guards as young men that didn't want to be there just as he didn't.




George H. Thomas .     US Army Signal Corps   from Seymour, Tennessee

George Thomas was the son of James Wilson Thomas (an Army veteran from East Tennessee) and Agnes Sullivan (an Irish American from New York). He and his brothers joined the military during World War 2. He didn't talk much about his POW experiences at Osaka Main Camp Chikko Osaka 34-135. We know he lost some fingers while in captivity. He was bitter towards the Japanese following the war.

Pte. Glyndwr Thomas .     British Army 8th Btn. Durham Light Infantry   from Ystrad, Rhondda, Glam

(d.13th July 1944)

Glyn Thomas was born to David and Charlotte Thomas, who lived in River Street, Ystrad, Rhondda, Glam. He served in the British Army in the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He was in the Expeditionary Force and was firstly reported as Missing, and then afterwards reported as Killed in Action on 13th of July 1944 aged 25 years.

He is buried in Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery, Calvados, France. The historical information states that there was much heavy fighting throughout June and July 1944 as they were moving to the south of Caen.




Lt. (j.g.) Harold Chester Thomas .     U.S. Navy USS Boise (d.Oct. 1942)

I am an associate currently working on the namesakes of the individual vessels of the United States Navy for the web site NavSource.org. I need assistance obtaining a digital image of Lt. (j.g.) Harold C. Thomas. The image is to be posted along with his biography on the page dedicated to the escort destroyer USS Harold C. Thomas (DE-21) named in his honor. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Cape Esperance. I am looking forward to hearing from former crew members or family members of the USS Boise with any information in the very near future or on any other Namesakes. We need tons of assistance in our project.

Henry Thomas .     British Army 4th Btn. Queen's Own Hussars

My father served with the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in Greece in 1941, but was captured during the retreat. He was a POW somewhere in either Italy or Germany.

My dad Harry Thomas served with the South Staffordshire Regiment. I am interested in his war record, especially his involvement with the Airborne Forces.
