Sgt. R. K. Thomson . 102 Squadron
Pte. Robert Thomson . British Army Highland Light Infantry from Glasgow
My mother-in-law was adopted and has now recovered her adoption records. They have disclosed that her father was Robert Thomson of the HLI. Her mother lived in Forfar and we presume my mother-in-law was conceived in December 1943. The records further show that Robert Thomson admitted to the Regiment's padre that he was the father of the child. However, he was posted abroad and never seen again. He came from Glasgow and may have been posted to the Forfar area for training. Would anyone have any information leading to the identity of Robert Thomson from this information? Any information would be appreciated. My mother-in-law is 67 years of age and would like to find out more about her natural father.

Ord Sea. William Leaver Thornber . Royal Navy HMS Scotia from Welling, Kent
I had often heard my Father, William Thornber say that he has served at Scotia as a Telegraphist. In fact my parents named their house after his short time there. Both of my parents have now passed on, but whilst emptying the contents of their house I came across my Father's old Service Records in which it showed that he was at Scotia May 1943 - July 1943.
As an ex RN Submariner, I am now trying to trace some of the other places and ships where my Father served as part of tracing our family tree. They include HMS Collingwood, Beamer, Boscawen, Odyssey, Europa and Phoenicia

Daniel Thorndike (nephew of famous actress, Dame Sybil Thorndike), was stationed at Catterick Garrison during WW2. Ronald Percy "Snowy" Thorne . Royal Marines HMS Sirius from Sherborne, Dorset
My father, Ron Thorne, served as a gunner on HMS Sirius. He was called Snowy because his hair was so blond it was white. He never spoke much about the war but I know he was at the Normandy Landings and in the Mediterranean. He was also on HMS Birmingham. He met my Mother in Cape Town and in 1946 he sent her the money to travel to England. They were married in 1947 in his home town of Sherborne. Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
