Pte. George William Timcke .     British Army Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment   from Essex

Private George William Timcke Soldier Number - 6022382 POW Number - 8339 Stalag 18A Wolfsberg I am the grandson of George W Timcke. I am trying to find out more details regarding his wartime experiences for my father. As far as we know, he started in the Essex Regiment before transferring to the Royal West Kent Regiment. During this time he was shot and injured somewhere in North Africa, and captured by the Italians. He eventually interned into Stalag 18A in Wolfsberg. This is all the information we have for him. If anyone could help us to find out more information regarding his experiences we would be very grateful. Many thanks.

Sgt.Pilot. Robert Short "Roy" Timewell .     Royal Air Force 539 Squadron   from Burscough, Lancs

(d.4th Oct 1942)

Sgt.Pilot Robert Timewell was a distant cousin of my wife, her surname is also Timewell which is quite an unusual name. He was assigned to 539 Squadron. In October 1942, he took off without permission and flew over his hometown of Burscough to perform aerobatics for his family but it went horribly wrong and he crashed his Hurricane into the local playing field killing himself instantly. We visit his grave when we can. The pub his parents owned is still there trading under another name.

Pte. George Tingle .     British Army 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards   from Keighley, Yorks

My father, George Tingle was stationed in Dumfries, Scotland during WW11. He joined the Army before the war started. He was billeted in the mills on St Michaels Street along with Guardsman Michael Meek, and Guardsman George Gott all of whom married local girls as did my Dad.

Dad met mum and they married in October 1942. Thankfully he missed El Alamein. He was also stationed at Blairgowrie in Perthshire before sailing to North Africa. Dad was the battalion butcher and I can recall many of his stories of scrounging food and I seem to remember him and others stealing a pig! .... could have been in Italy. All the names of places in North Africa and Italy I remember him telling me and my 2 brothers, even the names of those little islands in the Med now in the news again with the human tide in Europe. Lampedusa and Pantelleria - the battalion lost men there.

Dad befriended a small dog in North Africa and managed some how with the help of an officer get it through customs which was no easy task in those days. And, even after months, Tosh the dog knew him straight away.

I have very few photos of dad in the war days. My older brother has the Guards History "No Dishonourable Name" in which appears, on my next trip to the UK I hope to obtain a copy. Well that's a small piece of war time history which I am very proud of, as they say here in Australia: "Lest we forget"

Pte. Jack "Jacko" Tingle .     British Army Northampton Regiment

My grandfather, Jack Tingle, served in Burma from 21st of March 1941 to 22md of February 1945. He had a choice to fight or flight and being the strong willed and brave man he was, he decided to to take flight and go. He was part of the 14th Army and told me loads of stories about being in the jungle and the forgotten army.

I hold all his memories and my memories of my grandfather close to my heart and I am so proud to have known him, one very couragious gentleman. I would love to share all my stories but it would take me weeks to post them all on here.

I have all my grandfather's papers, photos etc when he served in Burma and will treasure these for the rest of my life as I loved him so much. We used to sit together every Sunday talking about his experiences when he served in India and I used to imagine the smells and the intensity of the heat as my grandfather and his pals had to walk the miles through the jungle feeling exhausted and hungry and fearing the Japanese.

Thomas Arthur Tinkler .     Royal Navy HMS Sirius

My neighbour for over 20years was the late Thomas Arthur Tinkler of Nottingham.I know that he spent all or most of his war on Sirius.like many who served their country during that dark time he only spoke about his exsperiences after great deal of prompting.I know that he was on Sirius when she was part of operation Pedastol and when the ship was bombed. He also told me about her being repaired at Massawa. He was also on the D day landings and about being shelled by HMS Nelson when he was part of a shore party sent to help refloat allied landing craft. Seaman Tinkler as I often fondly called him was chosen at random to take lunch on HMS Belfast to mark the 50th anniversary of the D Day landings and their was not a prouder man in the land than he on that occasion. Tommy is pictured on several photographes on this page the best one though is 7th picture from the top of the page.He is front right as you look at it.As to his job aboard ship I think he was below decks and I believe he was "Engineers runner".

Thomas Arthur Tinkler .     Navy HMS Sirius

The late Thomas Arthur Tinkler served on Sirius in WW2. He told me that he served throughout the Mediterranean and was on the ship during a repair period at Massawa (during the "must get through convoy to Malta)and onto the Normandy landings, where I believe he was part of a shore party sent to assist stranded landing craft. He told me whilst ashore they were shelled by HMS Nelson.

Tommy features on some of the photos on the web page, the most notable being on the gun deck to the front right of Harry Bamford. Seaman Tinkler, sadly passed away several years ago. Because I did not acquire a computer until recently, he never knew about the web site. Without doubt he would have been very proud to have seen himself on some of the snapshots.

Tommy was invited to lunch on board HMS Belfast to mark the 50th anniversary of the D-day landings and that really made him very proud. I understand that he was a stoker and acted as Engineers' runner when the ship was at action stations. I tried on several occasions to get Tom's name added to the crew list.

Finally, Tommy, like many men, had to be prodded and prompted to talk about his war, but such is the debt that we owe to the countless departed Tommy Tinklers that we should never forget them.

J Tinnion .     British Army

J Tinnion served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
