World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Pte. David Tod .     British Army 2nd Btn. Suffolk Regiment   from 29 Stobhill Road Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland

(d.15th Apr 1944)

My great-granddad, David Tod (formerly in the Royal Scots), served in Burma from 1941 to 1944 with the 2nd Suffolk Regiment. He was killed on 15th od April 1944 at age 34, on the ridges and hills around Ukhrul Road, on a topographical feature called 'Ring' or 'Pimple', by a Japanese sniper along with other men. Although he was seen dead, for it is reported in the unit’s war diary, and hastily buried, his marker was lost to time and his grave was never located to bury him in a commonwealth war cemetery. His body may have been dragged away down the backs of the 'Ring' ridge location as the surviving soldiers reported hearing slithering noises during the night that sounded like bodies being dragged away as the Japanese took clothes, weapons and other items of use for themselves.

He was living in 29 Stobhill Road, Gorebridge, Midlothian with his wife Ann Tod and their children before going off to war. His wife never spoke of him and any photos lost. I am desperately trying to find any photos of Battalions and Units he was in so his son, my granddad also named David Tod who is now in his 80's, may see his father’s face again. He is commemorated on Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar (formerly Burma) for soldiers that have no grave.

Pte. Alan Crighton Todd .     New Zealand Army 20th Battalion   from Invercargill NZ

Our father Alan Todd died in 1966 while we were all quite young so never got to hear much about his time as a POW. We do know he was captured on Crete and spent time in Stalag V111B Teschen and there is reference to him being captured in Prague and held in Pancrac Prison for some time before being returned to camp. We intend travelling to Prague next summer to have a look around and perhaps visit the site of the POW Camp though doubt much will be left of it now

Major. Edward Charles Todd .     Australian Army 10/48th Btn.   from 23 White Street, Highgate, South Australia, Australia

Charles Todd initially served with the Australian Army from the onset of WW2 with the 10th/48th Battalion, prior to joining the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment in 1944-1945. My understanding is that he sailed from Western Australia to India (together with a friend Tom Limbrick) and saw action in India and Burma. He never talked much about his service with either the Australian Army or the British Army. He did mention he had an association of some sort with Gurkha's.

Charles received the Defence Medal, War Medal 1939/45, Australian Service Medal, Burma Star and Pacific Star medals. I believe he was asked to remain in Burma after hostilities to collect military artefacts (for want of a better word) but declined, wishing to return home to Australia.

Lt. Ian Menzies Todd .     Britsh Army 5th Btn. Black Watch

I am looking for information about my father, Ian Menzies Todd, who served during WWII in the 5th Battalion Black Watch of the 51st Division in Montgomery's 8th Army. Could anyone help me or give me a lead? I would be very grateful.

Lt. Ian Menzies Todd .     British Army 1st Battalion Black Watch

I am looking for details relating to my father, Ian Todd's service during WW11. Letters I have received and books he has written indicate he served in the 51st Highland Division with the 1st Black Watch. He once told me he was the first person to receive his commission during the African Campaign from General Montgomery. I have very little details and anything anyone could add would be of great help. He also served as Winston Churchill's personal body guard on a number of occasions. He apparently fought at El Alemien but I have very little information. If anyone has any record of his service I would be very grateful. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail.

My balloon posting was Yeovil, Somerset for about 1 year until there were enough men to take over. I then went to RAF Weeton to retrain as a motor mechanic, then posted to Stanmore. While there, one of the men in the workshops pestered me to write to his brother-in-law Tom who was serving in Italy. He eventually wore me down and I began writing. We wrote and got to know each other and when the war finished we met up in London and he asked me to marry him the first time met. We married on the 4th Jan 1947 and remained married until his death in January 2005.

Pte. Nathan Todd .     British Army Royal Artillery   from London

Nathan Todd was my uncle. He joined up in 1940. He was, initially, in the Royal Artillery until October 1943 when he was attached to the 4th Battalion, Border Regiment. He served in the Chindits behind the Japanese lines.

He told me that at one stage he and a fellow soldier contracted malaria and dysentery and were very ill. Because they were behind the Japanese lines they could not be taken along with their group. The commanding officer told them that they would taken by the Naga tribesmen on mules to try to get back to the British base. He handed my uncle and his colleague a revolver each with the instruction, "Five bullets for the enemy and one for yourself". With that they were placed on the mules, I think he said that they were sort of slung over them, and taken by the Naga tribesman to begin their journey back to base. It must have been a long journey because he was posted missing in action.

He told me very little of his experiences despite my questions. He told me that one morning, before he was taken ill, he woke up in his sleeping bag to find that a python had wrapped itself around him. He could just move his hand and managed to shoot it with his revolver. He was discharged in 1946. My uncle died 40 years later - the irony was that he died following an intense bout of malaria which he suffered with all his life after his military service.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
