WO. Thomas Toner . Royal Air Force 210 Sqn from Newry
My Uncle was Warrant Officer Thomas Toner 1143471 (WOP/AG) Wireless Operator Air Gunner. I have his service record details that show he served with 190 Sqn from 2 June 1943 until then getting posted into 210 Sqn on 25 April 1944. Sadly I have no photographs of him serving at any units or stations. I only have the information on him that was passed on from the RAF Disclosures unit based at RAF Cranwell. I would like to make a plea on the off chance that anyone reading this little synopsis has any information or photographs of Thomas if you could share it either on this site or get in touch with me.
What I do know is that he was on active service and was a member of the crew of a 210 Sqn Catalina involved in torpedoing and sinking a German U Boat. At this stage I haven't recovered the local newspaper report that he submitted of the event.

Cpl. Reginald Samuel "Curl" Tonlinson . British Army 48th Division Royal Army Service Corps from Ashburnham Road, Northampton
It's been 34 years since my father, Reginald Tonlinson, passed away at the age of 72. He never mentioned the war although as a child I can remember him being fascinated with a programme on the TV called All our Yesterday's. Very, very occasionally one or two stories might come out. I know he was in Italy in 1945 in Naples. I think he was a driver and he probably rode motorbikes for communicating, as he was a bit of a petrolhead and very keen on cars! He did tell me once that he had changed a shift due to his illness (probably too much beer) with a motorbike dispatch rider and unfortunately, the other rider was killed by an explosion. That could have been my dad. I would not be here today if it had been.
I was 30 years old when father passed away. I hardly knew what he did during the war and all those memories are now lost. I applied for his medals 18 months before he passed away - they arrived one week after his funeral. He never saw them. Whatever dad did in the war, he would have done it well and with gusto!
Toogood . Royal Air Force 158 Sqdn.
Sgt Toogood was a member of an aircrew along with Sgt. Sibbley, Alan Widdowson and Les Mewis.
Flt.Lt. Harold "TG" Toogood . Royal Air Force 125 Squadron
I joined 125 Squadron just before we converted to P47 Thunderbolts and served with them as an Engineering Officer during the Burma Campaign. I am now 2 months short of my 98th birthday.
Flt.Lt. John Roland Toogood . Royal Air Force 254 Squadron from 5 The Willowong, Burton Joyce
John Toogood was stationed at North Coates, St. Andrews, Glossop. He flew Beaufighters normally but also flew 27 other types of aircraft. He was shot down in the North Sea but survived to fight another day and became a member of the Gold Fish club. He once told me he felt cheated because Coastal Command didn't get the recognition it deserved. It was if they didn't do anything. He last piloted a Tiger Moth when he was 76, but flew as a passenger for another 3 years.
Sgt. L. Toogood . Army The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
Daniel J Toohey . US Navy VB103 Sqd Fleet Air Wing 7
My Dad, Daniel J. Toohey, was stationed at Dunkeswell during the war.
Sgt. Noel Messines "Fonghi" Toohill . Royal Air Force 207 Squadron from Australia
(d.9th January 1942)
I believe Noel Toohill was friends with Arthur William Buck (1305690) Air gunner on Lancaster Bombers. He was killed 23rd of September 1943. From what I can gather they must have met at RAF Waddington close to where my grandparents lived.
He was an Australian and I have a photograph of him. My mother must have known them both as there is a nickname for him 'Fonghi'. The photograph says 'missingm raid on Breste 7th January 1942 but records state killed 9th January 1942. So glad to be able to put information and full names to these brave young men.

Pte. Mervyn Basil "Muff" Tooke . British Army 4th Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment from Hull, East Yorkshire
Dad, Mervyn Tooke joined the Territorial Army before the War began & had very happy memories of training at Stow-on-the-Wold. He married mum Irene (Pet) on a 3 day leave in April 1941. He was captured in the Middle East in June 1942, spending 6 months as a prisoner in the desert (in a cage according to mum) before being taken by coal steamer to southern Italy, where he spent time in a holding camp. He was moved to northern Italy by cattle truck in dreadfully hot, cramped conditions, several men dying on route. When the Italians surrendered he was moved to Stalag IVB until liberation by the Americans I think in May 1945. He said there wasn't a dry eye on the ship as the men saw the White Cliffs of Dover on their return, something many hadn't ever expected to see.
Post war he had a happy life with mum, daughters Sally, Beryl, myself & six grand children ("I love you double" he used to tell them.) Sadly he died in October 1992. A hard working lovely man, he kept his bad memories of the war to himself and only told us amusing tales "We hid behind the same blade of grass on Dunkirk beach!" He didn't have a bad word to say about the Germans, enjoying practising the German he remembered with German tourists in Mallorca in the late 70's early 80's. He wasn't so fond of the Italians, the men that is, he said the women were all right! They threw apples at them sobbing when they were marched through villages after working on the land as they were such a pitiful sight. He spent time in hospital in Naples with dysentery and survived despite losing half his body weight. He is much missed and we will always be very very proud of him.
Fus. James J. P. Toole . British Army 8th Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers from Salford

If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
