My dear granddad, Bob Trout, was a POW at Stalag 9c from 1940 to 1945. He would not talk about it. I will always be so very proud of him.

Dvr. Henry William Troutt .     Royal Army Service Corps 27 Company   from Maidenhead

As I guess everyone is, I am trying to trace my father Harry Troutt's war record/history. It would appear he volunteered before the outbreak of the war on the 15th of July 1939. He then served with 27 Corp RASC and was at Dunkirk. He served with various units (1st corp RASC, 288Corp RASC July 1940, 118Corp RASC Oct 1941, Pioneer Corp Dec 1941 and No 12 Centre, until Oct 1942 when he was discharged as 'unfit' due to medical grounds.

I have been unable to trace the service of any of these units, can anyone help?

C.P.O. Harry Trowbridge .     Royal Navy HMS Electra

My Uncle was Acting Stoker, P.O., Harry Trowbridge, he served on board HMS Electra, and I have a small HMS Electra ID. booklet showing his name, rating, part of ship, Mess No. and religion.

Following the sinking of the Electra, my Aunt was extremely concerned for his wellbeing and wrote to the Admiralty requesting information on the 25th of March 1942. A reply was received in April 1942 stating that my Uncle was confirmed as a survivor from HMS Electra and had been landed at Fremantle, Australia.

Following that my Uncle was “loaned” to the Australian Navy and in July 1942 my Aunt wrote to the Admiralty to enquire of the exact position. In September 1942 she received a letter from the Admiralty confirming that my Uncle was “on loan” to the Australian Navy but that his case and the cases of other ratings similarly placed, necessitated enquiries being made of the Australian Naval Authorities.

I have a postcard with a photograph of a ship set in the outline of Australia – it looks like a destroyer and has the number J186 printed on its side. I believe my Uncle stayed with the Australian Navy for approximately 2 years.

I am pleased to say that my Uncle continued to serve the British Navy until the end of the War. I have a photograph of him when he served on HMS Royal Oak and he also served on HMS Foxhound and T.S.S. Athenia sunk by a German submarine on 3rd of September, 1939.

He died in 1981. He never talked about his days in the camp. It's a long shot but if anyone has any info about my uncle while he was in 2A would be appreciated by me & my family. I see a Earnest V Hansen from the same unit as my uncle listed here so its worth the try.

His father, James Jitsuei Tsubota, served in the Canadian Army in WW I and was at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He also served in WW II as a Canadian Army Warrant Officer at the School of Oriental and African Studies where he was a Japanese language instructor for the British Army.

My granddad George Tubb was in Singapore in 1942 when the British Army surrendered to the Japanese. He was imprisoned first in Changi, then in Chungkai, and he worked on the Burma Death Railroad.

He never spoke about his time in captivity, but he was a very happy man. It wasn't until he died in 1999 that my aunt found a lot of his momentoes and maps that he kept. He lost a lot of his comrades while in POW camps and was lucky to survive.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
