L.A.C. Ernest Leslie Tuddenham . Royal Air Force 274 Squadron from Norfolk
Ernest Tuddenham was my father. He never said very much about the war, but it was clear it was not a happy time. He mentioned he was a tail gunner in the RAF and that his plane had crash landed at Lossiemouth after seeing action. The crash resulted in injuries in which he lost all his teeth, and resulted in him walking with a slight limp thereafter. I can't imagine a worse position than being a tail gunner in a bomber. He had been married before the war but, as had often happened, his wife had found someone else while was serving his country.
In 1945, he was transferred to the Army (Royal Engineers) as an HGV driver. He was stationed in Portsmouth as the war was finishing and, during a rare evening out at a dance at one of the old forts on the hill behind the town organised by his regiment, he met my mother, Mary. As the driver, he had to drop all the ladies off around Portsmouth after the dance had finished. Yes, he made a point of dropping Mary off last! The rest is history.
Frederick Charles "Gerry" Tuddenham . Royal Air Force 547 SQuadron from Brookwood, Surrey
Frederick Tuddenham served with the Royal Air Force in WW2. served in 547 Squadron. He was stationed in Leuchars in Scotland at some stage. He met my mum in Benson, Oxfordshire, where she owned the Castle Inn hotel, and most airmen (British and American), drank there, during and after the war. They married in 1948. Benson Aerodrome also had the King's flight stationed there, as well.
Flight Sergeant Reginald Joseph Tudehope . RAAF No. 10 Radio School
Bmdr. James Arthur Tudor . British Army 152 (Ayrshire Yeo) Field Regiment, C Troop, B Batt Royal Artillery from Bradford West Yorks.
My father, James Tudor refused to discuss his service in the Italian campaign, but one or two facts did come out that began a story that I could relate to in later life. That was the reality of war, and the realism of the trauma our relatives suffered, is emotional to say the least.
For example he told my Mother of dozing off under a tree, presumably at the Monte Cassino bombardment phase of the campaign when a raindrop landed on his helmet, and such was the tension of the situation he thought he had been blown up. Then in Rome he told her of searching ordinary houses with ordinary families in residence, and his feeling that how would he have felt if it had have been our home that foreign troops were searching.
In September 1944 he had a portrait painted by Artists of Florence at a studio that still exists (I visited it in 2011 on a trip to Italy) these paintings were done for many British soldiers, his name and detail was inscribed on the back.

Midshipman. John D Tuffill . Royal Navy HMS Nelson (d.12th Aug 1942)
Stok1. William Henry Tuffin . Royal Navy HMS Malaya from Hounslow
Bill Tuffin joined the Royal Navy on 4th May 1937, 2 months after his 20th birthday. After training he joined the Malaya on 16 November 1937 as a Stoker 2nd Class. On 4 April 1938 he was promoted to Stoker 1st Class. He served on Malaya until 9th August 41.
At the outbreak of war he saw service in the Mediterranean and the Indian Oceans. Early 1940 he was in the Atlantic when Malaya carried UK's Gold reserves from Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and escorted Canadian troop ships back to the UK.
In April, it was back to the Med for escort duty and the anticipated Italian hostilities. Italy declared war in June 1940 and after a very busy 1940 in the Med and its part in the bombardment of Genoa in February 41, Malaya moved to cover Atlantic convoys when she was torpedoed on 20 March 41. I remember how Dad, used to tell us, how frightening it was, especially for the Stokers who were always below decks and ran the risk of being entombed in the ship if the water tight doors activated. Fortunately, there was no loss of life on Malaya. Nevertheless, Dad said it was a very anxious time for all on board a damaged ship which took 9 days to reach Port of Spain in Trinidad. Their escort left them after 3 days so they were 6 days on their own.
The up side was that after temporary repairs in Trinidad, Malaya proceeded to the Brooklyn Navel Dock in New York for full repairs and refit. It arrived 6th of April 1941 and left 9th of July 1941. Bill stayed with the ship. During this time he was able to visit his mother's cousin in Connecticut and also went to the Kentucky Derby in May 1941. We also have a great photo of Dad when he went to the famous Jack Dempsey Bar with personnel from the USS Vincennes. He left Malaya on 9th of August 1941 after it returned to the UK via Halifax Nova Scotia on troop escort duty.
Dad went on to serve on HM Ships Despatch (destroyer) and Narborough (Capt Class Frigate). Narborough was on escort duty for Operation Neptune and did 29 troop escorts in 36 days. Narborough was escorting USS Susan B Arthur on 7th of June 44 when it struck a mine and sank. There was no loss of life. Narborough took on 700 US soldiers which overloaded Narborough and Dad said their was great relief when they reached the troop landing crafts where the soldiers left Narborough.
Mum and Dad married 1st of October 1944 and on 20th October Dad, on the Narborough was part of the 30 vessel escort for Arctic Convoy JW61. When we were small children Dad told us the stories of how cold it was up there and how big the seas were. How the waves broke over the ship and covered the decks and everything in ice. How for 24 hours of the day, someone was always chipping ice off the ship, especially the guns.
Dad continued to serve after the war, on the Narborough until 29 October 1945, and then on the minesweeper HMS Gazelle before he was discharged on 1st October 1946. He went on to have 2 daughters, 3 sons and 8 grandchildren. He was very practical and patient, and had a really good sense of humour, qualities passed on to his children and for which we thank him.

AB. Andrew Tully . Royal Navy HMS Penelope from 3 Dronley Place, Beechwood, Dundee, Scotland
My father, A/B Andrew Tully, was on HMS Penelope during the big actions in Malta in 1941. My sister had been born in December 1941 and my mother used to tell us that my father had purchased a christening shawl for her in Malta. During the attacks on the ship, when Penelope was in dry dock, my father would shove the christening shawl inside his jumper while he ran to his action station. We still have the book "Our Penelope" in our family. I remember my father telling us that when Penelope eventually made it to Brooklyn Navy yard, the ship's company was taken to a place called the Stage Door Canteen in Manhattan to see a show. In the 1990's, when walking through Manhattan, I actually walked past a small doorway on which a sign said "site of the Stage Door Canteen."

If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
