World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

L/Sgt. Donald Frederick Twiddy .     British Army Singapore Fortress Signals Royal Corps of Signals (d.26th June 1944)

Pte. Harry Twidle .     British Army 4th Btn. Yorkshire Regiment   from Saltburn by the Sea

Harry Twidle is top right.

Harry Twidle was part of the British Expeditionary Force and the North African Force of the 4th Battalion, Green Howards. I have countless letters from my father, Harry='s, account of his time during the war. I am an author and presently writing a romance novel 'Harold The Good Soldier' which I hope will be published in the future. It is inspired by the letters.

Pte. Harry Twidle .     British Army 4th Btn. Yorkshire Regiment   from Saltburn by the Sea

I know my father, Harry Twidle was in Stalag 11A prison camp. I am writing a book about it. I have all his war letters and those from his time in PG 78 and Magdaburg, Berlin before the end of the war.

Pte. Harry Twidle .     British Army 4th Btn. Yorkshire Regiment   from Saltburn by the Sea

Like many people, I never knew anything of my father Harry Twidle 's prisoner of war record. I am now writing a novel based on his war letters and the time he spent in the camp and the only reason I add my father to this list is that I now realise he was a real fighting soldier and never really got any reognition for his time in a prisoner of war camp.

Percy Twigg enlisted in August 1941 under the National Service Act 1939. He was 34 at the time. He was hospitalised in September 1943 for 2 months suffering from Malaria and again in July and October 1944. His regiment was part of the 36th Infantry Division, that for a time was in the Northern Area Combat Command under American General Joe Stilwell.

In December 1945 he was formally discharged and embarked for return to the UK from Batavia as part of Group 25 A release, arriving home in February 1946. He received an exemplary record of conduct. He was employed mainly as a driver of all types of vehicles. In May 1946 he was transferred to 2(T) Reserves and discharged on completion of engagement.

His medals from WW1 are the "Mutt and Jeff" pair. After 1918 he returned to his headmaster job, staying in that post until he retired in 1951, and is well remembered on the Doveridge village website.

My father William Tye was a gunner for the Royal Navy. He enlisted in 1943 at the age of 18. I have his papers, but they are a little hard to understand. The ships listed were Glendower, President III, Pembroke and the last one is the Tulmar. He was injured and given an honourable discharge. The sad part is that my father would never discuss the war with me, as I was a girl. I feel very sad about it now. I am the President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 43, and I am involved with the Vets, past and present. I would like very much to find out more if I could. Any photos or stories.

Jack Tyerman was my Great Uncle, brother of my Grandfather Harold and sister Margaret (Peggy) Tyerman. I only have images of Jack with his regiment, Group photos that were captured at Stalag XX-B. I know nothing of his life, which is a terrible shame. He was a POW at Stalag XXB from an early date in the war. One letter is dated Wednesday 22nd of October 1941 and one is for 14th of March 1944. Life was upbeat in the early years and towards the end it was dire, bored, depressed.

Pte. William "Tiddles" Tyldesley .     British Army 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment   from Bolton, Lancashire

The photo that my Grandad used to show my Mum

William 'Tiddles' Tyldesley, I believe, joined the Queens Royal Regiment at first, he then met my Grandad, Raymond Wells of the Royal West Kents during Dunkirk. He may have joined the West Kents when they returned to England after Dunkirk as he stayed with my Grandad until 1942. In 1942 he joined another company, my Grandad was very upset as they had been best friends. I think he joined up for parachute training as I have placed him at Derby, Bulford Camp, Chesterfield, Hardwick Hall and Manchester. From my Grandad's letters I can place him in the following places during the War:

    • Late 1943/Early 1944: Italy
    • October 1944: France
    • January 1945: Athens, Greece (possibly Operation Manna, Arkforce, Force 140 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade)
    • January/February 1946 - Palestine
    • I believe he was demobbed sometime after 21st Feb 1946.

He was born in Bolton, Lancashire, liked football, had a sister (who came down to Dartford, Kent to stay with my Nan during the War), he had at least 2 brothers - the oldest was demobbed in September 1945, the youngest had been serving in Italy. He mentions he was in 27 Group or over for demobbing in 1946. He writes about friends called Tommy Simpson, who was in C Company (Possibly of the Royal West Kents), and who lives near William in Bolton and Dinky Aston, who was in Group 25 or 26 for demob. The last address that I have for him is HQ COY. 4th Btn, Para Regt, MEF, this was in 1946.

Throughout my Grandad's letters to my Nan and other family members he always mentions Tiddles and wonders where he is, he is so pleased when he receives letters from him. After the war, for some reason, including moving houses, my Grandad could not find him. I know he lived through the war,but have no idea after that. My Mum remembers her Dad showing him a picture of Tiddles and saying "That was my best friend, I'd love to find him again". Unfortunately at that time there was no internet and, even now, unless you are a relative,or have lots of money to pay fees for research, that couples with the fact that the MOD do not release documents yet means that my Grandad died unable to find his best friend. I have been trying to do that for the last year. I would be so grateful to anyone that knows or has information William 'Tiddles' Tyldesley, and can help me find out what happened to him.

Cpl. Graham Tylee .     Royal Air Force 32 Squadron

Graham Tylee served as an airframe fitter with 32 Squadron

QS Albert Tyler .     British Army South Wales Borderers

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
