George Taylor

My father, George Taylor, belonged to Meadowhead, Ythan Wells, Aberdeenshire. He joined the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in Nov 1934 at the age of 18 years and 6 months, and was assigned to a signals platoon. In 1940, his battalion was part of the 51st Highland Division, which was ordered to stay and help the French forces in trying to stop the German advance. They were left with little food, ammunition, or artillery and they were also so exhausted that the commander gave the order to surrender to save the slaughter of approximately 10,000 soldiers. He was captured at Saint-Valery-en-Caux in June 1940. While out on a motorbike relaying orders to other battalions, he ran into a German patrol. Along with many others, he was marched to Stalag 383 Hohenfels near the Czech border and held as a POW until May 1945.

He never once told us of his experiences during the war, but they took their toll on him. For the rest of his life, he suffered nightmares every night until he passed away in 1991 at the age of 75.

Stk. Hamish Hislop "Buck" Taylor .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson

When the nelly arrived in the USA after the D-day landings the captain, Maxwell Hyslop, was interviewed by the local news paper reporters. He made a remark that was reported in the paper, later. - That as a boy he used to shoot rabbits with his point 22 rifle. Never thought as captain of HMS Nelson he would shoot a German jeep at 22 miles range with a 16" shell. - This happened as the Nelson, along with HMS Warspite were engaged in clearing a way for Allied troops to advance.

If any one has a copy of that report which appeared in the paper I would be most greatfull, for a copy. In order to settle a lot of arguments. At the time I was on watch in the hydraulic machinery, listening to the Canadian aircraft spotter relay the events over the tannoy to the ship's company.

My grandad Harold Taylor was a despatch rider in Egypt, I've been looking into my family tree and we have pictures of him eating melon in front of the Sphinx, he dodged bullets and delivered mail and documents. He was injured towards end of war very rarely talked of what happened. He did do a pilgrimage in the 80s to Egypt with his wife, where he visited old barracks and found that not much had changed.

As I was born in 1935, my memory is somewhat lacking! However I do know that my father was in the A.R.P. and the civil defence. He spent many hours away from home, especially at night At the beginning we did not have an air raid shelter so, as he was stationed at that time at the city morgue, we went with him! Eventually as the war progressed he built a dugout shelter in the back yard which we shared with neighbours. I was and still am, very proud of him; a good man and very well respected in the community.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
