Does anyone have information on the period September 1942 to February 1943 at Netheravon, 295 Squadron? I am the grandson of F/O David Upsher, killed on 19th February 1943 in Saumur flying a Halifax from Netheravon.

I am looking for information on 295GT Squadron, based at Netheravon, Wiltshire in 1943, Halifax equipped, February 19th 1943 mission with two planes over Loire valley, France. One plane was lost, one returned. My grandfather F/O David Upsher was the pilot of the lost Halifax. The crew are buried in Saumurelcome.

Update.

Fourteen aircraft from 295 Squadron were tasked with a raid on three electricity transformers at Distre, near Saumur. Two aircraft were brought down by anti-aircraft fire. The crew who died on this mission and are buried in Saumur Communal Cemetery are:

    D. Upton was a navigator with 295 Squadron and flew with Jim Clarke (tail gunner), A.G. Smith (pilot) and A. Savage.




    Dvr. James Upton .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps   from Walsall, West Midlands

    (d.27th May 1940)

    James Upton was my grandmother's brother-in-law. His wife was called Lily. He died at Dunkirk and his name is on the Dunkirk Memorial. Would love to know more about him.

    Lt. Antoni Jan Urban .     Polish Army   from Wieliczka

    After the September Campanion in 1939 my great grandfather, Antoni Urban, along with other officers was imprisoned in military detention camps. Firstly he was in Oflag II-B, somewhere during 1940 he was hospitalized in Stalag IV-A, later all the way till the end of WW2 he was imprisoned in Oflag II-C.

    I am trying to trace my granddads life in Argyll Sutherland Highlanders between 1940 and 1945.




    Driver/Gnr. Jim E. Ure .     British Army 8th Army

    Jim Ure was a tank driver/gunner with the 8th Army. He was given duties as a printer in Egypt after a shell hit his tank during the Battle of El Alamein. His shoulder was dislocated and he had a perforated eardrum. The driver was kiled.

    George Uren .     Royal Navy HMS Merlin (d.11th January 1941)

    I only know George Edward Uren died when HMS Merlin sank I believe January 11th 1941. He was the son of Edward who was also serving in the War. He was my grandfather's brother.

    Capt.(Chapl). George Blair Urquhart .     British Army Cameron Highlanders (Queens Own)   from Larkhall

    My father, the Rev. George Blair Urquhart, was minister of Chalmers Church, Larkhall, Lanarkshire at the outbreak of WW2. He was initially rejected for war service on medical grounds due to a heart murmur, but eventually by obtaining further medical opinions, was able to join as an army chaplain. He served with the Cameron Highlanders, and the Black Watch, and perhaps other units. He was part of the advance through France into Germany after D-Day. His unit was supposed to cross the Rhine at Arnhem in the wake of its capture but that did not happen as is well known. He was based in Germany for a while at the end of the war. He later served with his unit in India before leaving the army around 1946-47.

    (d.12th October 1944)

    Liberator KH158H, with eight crew, disappeared on a supply dropping mission to Italian partisans on 12th/13th October 1944 and was never found. The full crew were:

  • Mjr S.S. Urry, SAAF, 1st Pilot
  • Lt. G.A. Collard, SAAF, Navigator
  • 2/Lt. P.J. Lordan, SAAF
  • WO(2) G.E. Hudspith, RAF, 2nd Pilot
  • Sgt. R.C. Fitzerald, RAFVR, Airgunner
  • WO(1) L.B. Bloch, SAAF, Airgunner
  • Lt. N.W. Armstrong, SAAF, Airgunner

    All are commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

    Dvr. Harry Usher .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps (d.31st Mar 1945)

    Harry Usher, son of William James Usher and Matilda Usher of Jarrow, County Durham, died aged 29 in Germany on 31st March 1945. He is buried at Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance to Jarrow Town Hall.
