Fred Vowles was adopted by Greys WI, near Henley on Thames. He appears in the WI archives of Greys as "Fred" or "our prisoner of war". From 1943 until 1945 letters to and from Fred were documented, gift were sent, mainly hand knitted garments such as gloves and socks, but also cigarettes and a book on combustion engines. In July 1945 he visited Greys and was presented with a wallet and £11-5s. We know nothing more, except I have discovered that Fred was held in Stalag XXB for 5 years. If anyone knows anything about Fred Vowles, we would be very grateful.

F/Sgt. Peter Adrian "Chick" Vowles .     Royal Air Force 103 Sqn   from Wrington, Somerset

My Uncle Peter Vowles was proud of his service with 103 Sqn as an Air Gunner (Tail and occasional Mid Upper), serving at Elsham Wolds as part of Taff Slee’s crew from late 1943 until converting to Lincolns transferring “en Bloc” to 57 Sqn at Scampton.

He took part in Op Manna and Op Dodge but we know little about any other operations he was involved in and would love to hear from anyone who can fill in these gaps for us. I attach some photos from his Diary that may jog memories.

Cmdr. Alexander Vraciu .     United States Navy   from West Sacramento, CA

Alex Vraciu, 96, a fighter pilot who became one of the Navy's top flying aces during World War II, once downing six Japanese planes in eight minutes during a battle dubbed the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot, died 29th January 2015. He was credited with destroying 19 Japanese planes in the air and 21 on the ground - ranking for several months as the Navy's top fighter ace. His most noted exploit came on the 19th June 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The US assault on the Mariana Islands was underway and he had already distinguished himself in the Pacific by shooting down a dozen enemy planes. He said "I had a job to do: Clear the sky".

Zarko Vrbajac .     Serbian Army

My father, Vrbajac Zarko, born on 1908, in Krusedol, Banat, Srbija (Krušedol Selo, Âî¼âîäèíà Banat, Serbia) had been imprisoned as soldier of Serbian army on 15.04.1941., and taken as prizoner in prizoner camp 9c Stalag, where he was held until 10.03.1945. His prizoner number was 35185.

Can anyone please help me in finding anyone who has been with him and where I could ask for reparation for the time which my father spent in prizon camp in Germany. Thanks in advance. His daughter.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
