I recently came across this document, it tells an amazing story of bravery. My uncle, Jim Ware flew more than 51 sorties as a rear gunner in Wellington bombers and lived to tell the tale. I would be surprised if many airmen could beat this. Here is his recommendation for the Distinguished Flying Medal in 1941. He was shot down, lost a part of his right leg and still carried on.

(d.27th Jan 1944)

Pte. Clifford Waring .     British Army 4th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment   from Burnley

My father, Clifford Waring, was captured at Dunkirk (aged 18 years) whilst fighting in the rear guard with the British Expeditionary Force. His family did not hear anything about him for a long time. I have a local newspaper cutting stating that he was last seen heading for Dunkirk and that his mother would be grateful for any news.

He was sent to Stalag XXB, Marienburg, East Prussia (now Malbork, Poland)where he remained until January 1945 when the Russian Army was advancing. He was then part of the Long March through Europe in one of the coldest winters recorded. He never spoke much about his experiences. I am fortunate to have all the letters that he sent to my mother from Stalag XXB but none of the replies that mother sent to him.

At the beginning of the war my parents were just friends but that friendship developed and in 1945 they were married. Unfortunately, my mother died just a few months before their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. Towards the end of his life dad started to tell my sister and myself more details about his life in the prison camp. He died in 2013, aged 91 years.

John Waring .     Auxiliary Fire Service     from Liverpool

My dad told me of his memories serving in the AFS in our home city Liverpool. He was John Waring, known as Jack. He drove fire engines and one can imagine how scary it was to do this through potholed and rubble strewn streets often without street lights and shaded driving lights. He said that he and the crew christened his engine "Limping Lena"!

His greatest memories was working at the time of the "May Blitz" in Liverpool in 1941. The German air raids caused havoc amongst the Liverpool docks and the Atlantic conveys having arrived in the port. The city centre had many beautiful department stores including the famous Blacklers store, a majestic building which caught fire due to a hit. My dad then became a member of the merged force as the NFS. At least for some time he worked out of the Dale Street, City Centre Fire Station.

I can remember when later, as a young lad, I played amongst the rubble of bombed buildings with my friends just across from the rear pedestrian entrance to the station in Old Swan.

John "Pongo" Waring .     Royal Navy HMS Woolwich

Does anyone remember my father, John Waring (Pongo), who served on HMS Woolwich from April 1944 to March 1945?

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
