George Watson was my father who died in 1956. He served in the DLI in Burma and I remember him mentioning place names there such as Irrawady, Arokan, Kohima,Rangoon, Imphal etc.

I have some of his uniform badges and a cap badge, also some photographs of him overseas. I also have a postcard from the time with a photograph of a cemetery for the fallen. It has a most moving verse on a noticeboard: "In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land commits her children to thy gracious hand".

He contracted malaria during his service, as did many of his comrades. He died of cancer, age 43, when I was 8 years old so we did not have much time together but he taught me to count to 20 in Hindustani; I can still do it! His family were convinced that the stresses of the Burma campaign killed him before his time. I recall him saying that he guarded some Japanese prisoners. I am guessing that they were few and far between before the A bombs so this was late in the war I suspect.

I would love to know more about his unit and their movements during the campaign. Any ideas on achieving this would be gratefully received.

Pte. Henry Barker Watson .     British Army Seaforth Highlanders   from Barkstone nr Grantham

I am attempting to trace the military history of my grandfather for my father.

He was caught as a POW in possibly Sicily and was a prisoner of war between July 1943 & October 1945 at a Stalag in Germany. On his repatriation he was posted to the 7th Royal Ulster Rifles. It would be nice to see any pictures or hear any stories about my grandfather that anyone may have.

Flt.Sgt. Howard Herbert "Bud" Watson .     Royal Canadian Air Force 427 (Lion) Squadron   from Toronto

Howard Watson enlisted in the Air Force after turning 18. He was discharged in July 1945. Bud talked about his training at Mont Joli, Quebec, before shipping to England as a member of the 427 Lion Squadron. I believe he was stationed at Leeming. He flew in a Lancaster as a rear air gunner and often mentioned how cold it was when they were in the air, even though they were all bundled up in their flight suits.

When a Lancaster became available at the Air Museum in Hamilton, he so wanted to take a flight in it but, unfortunately, never had the opportunity. Sadly, Bud passed away in 2014, in his 89th year, due to an accident.

Rfm. James Watson .     British Army 2nd Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)   from Blantyre

My father, James Watson, was involved with the landings in Scicily and then Italy. He was wounded on 1st Nov 1943 and lay in a ditch for about 3 days, presumed killed. He was eventually found, taken to hospital and then returned to Britain. After a period of time in hospital, he was eventually discharged as unfit for duty. Does anyone know which battle they were involved in at that time and which hospital in Italy he would have been sent to?

Pte. James Watson .     British Army 5th Btn. Black Watch   from Huddersfield

(d.9th Apr 1945)

I have managed to get my uncle, James Watson's service records. He joined the TA went for training PTW Perth, his records show he was relegated to Class W(T) (Can anyone explain the meaning of this?) He joined the 5th Battalion Black Watch and was one of 5 men killed in Schuttorf on 9th April 1945. It would be good to hear from anyone on the subject.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
