World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Pte. William Smellie Weir .     Queen`s Own Cameron Highlanders 4th Battalion   from 132 Back Street, Renton, Scotland

(d.21st Dec 1945 )

I am member of "Group 9 May" which in the past two years has been looking for graves of Soviet soldiers in the UK and the former Soviet Union. Some time ago in a database of the Ministry of Defence of Russia, I found an entry telling about a British soldier who died in Russia during the Second World War. Since then I've been collecting material about him and eventually I stopped just in front of one question - to find his relatives.

A brief history of William Weir: he was in the British Army since 1939. During the action was in German captivity in the area of Dunkirk. Was in a POW camp XX-B. After liberation (or escaping) he was sent to the Russian Military hospital 2860 were he died. He was buried in the Nizhny Novgorod region, Volodarsky area in the village Golyshevo. Date of Birth - 1918, Date of death - 21 December 1945. Defore WW2 he lived in Renton (Scotland), Back Street 132. His Mother's name was Mary Dunn Weir.

His name is on column N128 in Dunkirk Memorial, but his grave is in Russia. His relatives still do not know anything about him. Please help me to find them so they may know of his fate!

Samuel Welbourne .     British Army Royal Welch Regiment   from South Wales

My grandfather was Pte Samuel Welbourne from South Wales. He was with the Royal Welch Regiment when he was captured on 1st October 1944 in Italy. He first went to Stalag VII-A in Moosburg, Germany and then went to Stalag 344 / VIII-B in Poland in December 1944. He worked in one of the mines in this area too. My mother recalls him saying it was a salt mine. I have obtained a copy of his ID card from the camp which states on the back that he was part of "E72 Beuthen". This is the name of a nearby town which had lots of mines although I'm not sure exactly what "E72" was mining.

I don't know what happened to him between Dec 1944 and his hospital records from Newbury District Hospital on 9th May 1945. It says that 10 days earlier he had been in the vicinity of Regensburg, Germany. Can anyone shed any light on how he may have gone from Poland to Germany? If you have any more information to add to this I'd be really grateful.

Edward Weldon .     Air Raid Protection   from West Bromwich

Edward Weldon was born in 1894, with no birth records, his mother was Mary Ellen Wilden and she later married a gentleman named Arthur Elsmore. As the story goes Edward didn't enjoy his life as an Elsmore and when he joined the armed services it was under the name Edward Weldon.

He enlisted on 1st of September 1914. As records show he was in the 11th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. He served in France where, as the stories from his children say, he'd been gassed, bayoneted and shot in the leg during his service and was discharged wounded on the 16th of August 1917 following the shot through the back of his lower leg.

By all accounts he was a big powerful strong man who never talked about his time in the war and battles he'd been in. And typical of the man when WW2 came he became a warden still doing his bit. I never had the chance to meet my grandfather as he died before I was born. Having started to trace the family tree I have specifically been drawn towards his life. So sad I never got to meet this man but am tracing is army life with the aid of records, diaries and books.

Edward Weldon .     Air Raid Warden   from West Bromwich

I never had the chance to meet my grandfather Edward Weldon, but found his life story to be one of interest during my research into our family tree. Edward was born in 1894 and never knew his father. He had been led to believe his name was also Edward but unfortunately this was not the case. His mother married another man in 1897, but later, Edward retained what he believed was his family name of Weldon when he enlisted on 1st of September 1914 and was in the 11th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corp part of 20th (Light) Division.

He was involved in many of the early battles which included Mount Sorrel, Deville Wood, Guillemont, Morval and Le Transloy. Then on 16th of August 1917 at the Battle of Langemarck, he was wounded and that would be the end of his involvement in the Great War. The only thing that his wife and family knew was that he had been bayoneted through the leg and also shot through the back of his leg, Edward never spoke of any of his time in the battles but had become a very hard and stern husband and father. When WW2 came along he still did his little bit and became a Warden.

Sadly for me there are no photos remaining of him, the large photo of him as a young man in his full military uniform was damaged and thrown away. His medals again have sadly been lost, along with his memorabilia from his wartime travels. The only thing I have is the ability in today's technology driven world, is to trace the few records of his military campaign and the war diaries.

S Welford .     British Army Royal Artillery

S Welford served with the Royal Artillery British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: The Wartime Memories Project is no longer in contact with Dan , his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Jack Welham served in the Army Pay Corps as well as the Essex Regiment. He fought over in Belgium 3 days post D-Day landings. He was also sent over to Bad Lippspringe in Germany. During his time in the Army Pay Corps he passed his Standard T.T for clerk class III and class II. After leaving the Army he continued his career in accountancy until his retirement.

    F/Sgt. L. C. Welham .     97 Squadron

Cpl. Arthur William Weller .     Royal Armoured Corps 2nd Reconnaisance Regiment   from Bridgwater, Somerset

Arthur Weller was my grandfather but he never talked about the war, all I know is that he was in Burma and he was in the RAC.

Cpl. Peter John "Sam" Weller .     Royal Air Force   from Dover, Kent

My father Peter Weller served as a Direction guidance operator at RAF Conningsby from May 1942 - March 1944 and RAF Carnaby from March 1944 - March 1946. This involved him working from a small hut at the end of the runway. This hut was manned by three men on an eight hour shift system. While at Conningsby they had the use of bicycles owned by station and Peter would on occasion cycle to Boston with a friend for an evening out, a round trip of 26 miles!

Walter Augustus "Dick" Wellerd .     Merchant Navy SS Orama

Dick Wellerd was onboard the Orama when it was sunk in 1940, he was an Assistant Pantryman. He along with many others was a POW in Gard Nord camp for the remainder of the war. He is remembered as being a fastidiously neat and tidy man, very into keeping fit.

    Cyril Wellings .     British Army

My father Cyril Wellings was born in Wrexham on 6 July 1912. He was a prisoner of war in WW2. I don't know anything more about his time as a soldier. He died in 1980. I have lots of regimental photos taken in Hong Kong (in 1930's). My father played the bass drum in the regimental band. I've tried to find out more info on other websites but with no success.

Thomas John Wellington .     Royal Navy HMS Dauntless

My husband's grandad, Edwin Thomas John Wellington (deceased), served on HMS Dauntless during WW2. Does anyone remember him?
