World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

WO 1 Malcolm Victor Young .     British Army Border Regiment

F/Lt. Mervyn F.S. Young .     Royal Air Force 129 Sqn, 72 Sqn   from Woking

Mervyn Young with 129 Sqn at RAF Ibsley in the summer of 1943

A good friend of mine was based at RAF Hornchurch in 1943 - Flt Lt Mervyn Young of 129 Sqn & later 72 Sqn in Italy & Europe. He flew Spitfire DV-R (Serial No MH384). Mervyn told me that he was inspired to become a fighter pilot after watching the Howard Hughes Movie Hells Angels about WW1 Fighter pilots. He said his flight commander ‘Wag’ Haw had the same thoughts after seeing the movie.

He flew many missions in Europe including Ram-rod missions in support of the daylight bombing raids, mostly B17’s including the famous Memphis Belle at one time. On one sortie his No 2 Sgt Carmichael was shot down & killed but in 2003 his aircraft was recovered & in Sept' 2003 Mervyn was among the memorial parade with full miltary honours for Sgt Carmichael; lost on a sortie over Belgium & located 60 years later, the fateful sortie was flown while Mervyn was based at RAF Hornchurch.

Sadly Mervyn passed away in March 2006, I enclose a photo taken at RAF Ibsley in his Spit' DV-R (MH384) complete with his mascot logo of Jiminy Cricket.

Tpr. Raymond Derrick Young .     British Army C Squadron Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry

My dad, Ray Young, died in 2010, he told me of a few of his exploits but not many. He had trained in Scotland with the DD tanks in the run up to D Day. Some of the tanks had sunk in the Lochs and not everyone was sure that they would be successful on D Day. He told me that when in Normandy he had got drunk and chased a Sergeant(who later died in battle) with his revolver who dad hated. I think he got into quite a bit of trouble over it. He also mentioned that there was a time when an 88 German gun opened up on his tank (he was driver in C Squadron) and it missed by inches.

Sargent Richard E Young .     US Army 327 GIR Company G 101st Airborne

My dad, Sgt. Richard E. Young of the 101st Airborne 327 GIR. Company G was captured at Marvie near Bastogne either the 23rd or 24th of December. I know he was taken to Limburg Germany but that is about all I can come up with. He was with Lieutenant Morrison at Hill 500 when he was captured late in the afternoon or evening. I am looking for the group of Germans who captured them. I think I can find out through the literature I have gathered. There are very few of his company left.

Has anyone heard of Hill 500? I would like to go to Germany someday and trace his footsteps as much as I can.

As far as information about Stalag 12a, I found information on my dad from the National Archives in Washington DC. The National Archives has since moved to Baltimore I believe.

My dad was also at Carantan with the 101st where they were in a heck of a fight. The Sargent was hit by a mortar and Dad took over.

I would like to know how and when my dad and the prisoners at Limburg in Stalag 12a were liberated.

Flt.Sgt. William Lewis Johnston Young .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 106 Squadron.   from Whitehouse, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland.

(d.3rd May 1942)

Flt.Sgt W. Lewis Young was my uncle, with formal photograph attached, who was based at Coningsby with 106 Squadron until he was killed in action on 3rd May 1942. His photograph album is available to view online.

The photographs are in the sequence in which Lewis compiled the album. They are ordered, but not chronologically, and contain mainly pictures of RAF colleagues and of family. From the number of pictures of Exton Hall, I guess that it was a training centre with happy associations, as well as being very impressive to a young man from the Northern Ireland countryside. I have no information on any of the other airmen in the pictures.

One of Lewis’s uncles was killed at Dunkirk. His stepfather was a padre in the Black Watch in North Africa and Burma; and his brother, my father, was a tank commander in the North Irish Horse in North Africa and Italy (including Monte Casino). His sister later joined the WRVS in London. And, remember, there was no conscription in Northern Ireland.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
